    A) No, it does not. The FISA court has never said that domestic spying without a warrant is legal.

You are correct. The FISA court hasn't said that domestic spying without a warrant is legal. Of course, they haven't said it's ILLEGAL either. As a matter of fact, the FISA court hasn't made any statements on the NSA program simply because it is NOT WITHIN THIER JURISDICTION. Why? Because the NSA Program is NOT domestic spying! It is spying on enemy combatants attempting to communicate with thier agents inside our borders during a declared time of war. This is something that is well within the LEGAL jurisdiction of the President and the NSA. Don't believe me? Try this on for size. From a WSJ article:

Jimmy Carter's Attorney General, Griffin Bell, emphasized when FISA passed that the law "does not take away the power of the President under the Constitution." And in the 1980 case of United States v. Truong, the Carter Administration successfully argued the government's authority to have conducted entirely domestic, warrantless wiretaps of a U.S. citizen and a Vietnamese citizen who had been passing intelligence to the North Vietnamese during the 1970s Paris peace talks.

You see, this power has NOT ONLY been exercised before, but it HAS BEEN SUPPORTED BY THE COURTS. So therefore your points..

B)No, they did not. They got the required warrants from the FISA court.

I would agree. We are talking about someone who got fired, and THEN decided to "whistle blow" If he reported this first and THEN got fired, then I would be more inclined to believe him. But the fact that he was fired first and afterward decided that he "needed" to report this to a newspaper (as opposed to filing a wrongful dismissal dispute via the legal system) does not speak well to his motives.

This call monitoring has been going on for well over a year. If it really bothered him all that much, why didn't he come out with this a long time ago? Seems to me that there is a good chance that he's just a disgruntled former employee with some mental stability issues who decided that this would be a good way to get his 15 minutes of fame and maybe a book deal on the side while getting even with his former employer.

    Well said Sir!

If only our legislators followed your model more closely, many idiotic laws would not be on the books.

Your point reminds me of NY State's Anti-Cellphone law. A law was passed banning the use of Cellphones while driving in a car unless using a hands-free device. This was before any scientific studies were done. There was alot of press and public fervor about it, but the studies weren't complete yet. Well, the law was passed, and then the studies completed about 6 months later. The scientific studies concluded that while use of a cell phone in a car was somewhat distracting, it was only marginally more distracting than other legal in-car activites such as tuning the radio or talking to a passenger.

Conversely, the study found that using a hands-free device such as a speakerphone or a headset was actually much more distracting than just picking up the cellphone and talking. Mostly due to either fumbling with putting it on or (in the case of speakerphones) trying to find the "on" button so you can talk!

So here we have a law that not only was passed in the absence of good science, but actually CONTRADICTS the scientific conclusions!

The worst part about it is that the same nutcase politician that pushed the issue originally, now wants to go even further and ban the use of cellphones in cars TOTALLY!

Just goes to show you how politicians on a rampage can screw with our freedoms.

That depends entirely on your general taste in multimedia entertainment. If you enjoy action flicks, I would recommend starting with 'Cowboy Bebop'. Great show with a tremendous soundtrack, and the English dub is spot-on teriffic. You don't even have to watch it in Japanese and read subtitles if you don't want to.

If you prefer something more thoughtful, I'd recommend 'Grave of the Fireflies' (Historical drama), or even 'Spirited Away' (Think 'Alice In Wonderland' but with Japanese cultural Iconography instead of British).

If you prefer Romantic Comedy, something like 'Love Hina' might be a good choice, although it's a long series and kind of goofy at times. I also really enjoyed 'Chobits' (story exploring relationships between people and thier computers in modern society) But the main character is a bit of a twit.

Whatever you choose, don't let anyone tell you you HAVE to watch it in Japanese. Mostly the English dubs are carefully done and well casted. In the case of Cowboy Bebop, I felt the English cast did a much better job than the Japanese cast did. But that's just me. Enjoy your exploration of the world of Anime, it's sure to be interesting!
