  1. Re:New York City on If Not America, Then Where? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Lived in NYC the last 14 years. Everything you describe is fairly accurate but I want to add two things: 1) Cost of housing is f'd up. How about $1,500 for 300sq feet 'closet'? Good luck trying to find something affordable close to work... http://newyork.craigslist.org/search/abo/mnh/135?m axAsk=1900 2) I don't like confining myself to the city, and renting every time I want/need to be out of the city doesn't make financial sense. - Look up car insurance rates for NYC. - Try looking for parking in Manhattan (below 90th st). I'm 27, my girlfriend's 26, I'm in IT, she's in finance, both make decent money yet still can't really afford anything decent (housing) in the city we've lived most of our lives in, went to school/college, work in. She has an EU citizenship, so if/when we marry we'll think long and hard indeed about moving to an EU country.

But here comes the Covad problem. Recently they've enabled my CO, BUT since I do not have BA for as my local provider, (have MCI atm) they refuse the services pointing to some rediculous 'inside wiring' or such sole ownership of BA.. Now I will call the NYSPSC.. as well as MCI and BA itself (and threaten with a lawsuit if necessary), but I've been told people were able to get around this stupidity by other means. If anyone cares to share, I'd be much appreciative.

In most discussions about "the Chinese Government" it is important to remember that "Communist" is nothing more than a word when used with Chinese Government of today.

As with the Soviet Union, communism early on [read Gulag Archepilago for partial insight] morphed into (more or less) facism, with Chinese version become ever more revisionist (of communist ideals). Today it is not a communist state, primarely in economic system sense of the word, but also in everything else that is the outcome of such an economic system. It is a state with authoritarian government which main aim is to stay in power. The "communist" jargon is just a smokescreen..

Having been born and lived in Europe.. I was initially shocked at the lack of educational and/or non-moronic contect on non-cable news channels in U.S. when I moved here (lived 9yrs so far).

Now, whether it's big business that controls the stations or the .gov (think about it) that wants to keep the unwashed masses where they are.. or both.. the end result is dumbing down of people living in U.S. (remember, talking about non-cable tv).

When you turn on your n o'clock news.. which run general for 30min or 1hr(not nearly enough time).. you basically have 50% of content dealing with people being found dead.. overdosing.. etc etc etc. Other news involve less "demended" [sic] local scandals.. with a blur about how our [sic] president/mayor/etc are doing a good job regarding some issue.. and ofcourse the sports and weather.

International news from what I've seen usually take up 5%, of news coverage (and you wonder why people can't point to Canada on the map), anything that talk unfavorably about the owner company (which usually owns so many other enterprises it's hard to talk negatively about any idustry/etc!)

I could go on and on.. but I think most of us recognize the problem.. let me just give you an example of lack of / disinformation that your local news is.. ask your average Joe about "Socialism."

P.S. Here in NYC there are 2 (more?) nice PBS stations: WNET13 and WLIW21. You can catch BBC World News (U.S. edition) on latter one.
