You may label these distributions as no added value, but in reality, we're receiving 100 distributions trying their darndest to try and keep up with everyone else.
Each distribution _is_ frighteningly similar to the next, but it's because the competition is so cut throat, that they must ALL have these added values, or they will drop like flies..
Seriously, name 1 of the top 10 linux distros that didn't borrow a big feature from another distro! It's impossible, because the community is so tight, and the information sharing is at it's peak. Don't you just love it when freedom of information makes things better for everyone? =)

About 4 or 5 years ago, my best friend and I had just returned from what's referred to as "first saturday" in dallas (everyone goes downtown and sells hardware for cheap on the first saturday of the month).
We were pretty anxious as we had both just bought brand new machines... so we headed over to my house and started building the computers.
I swear that there's nothing better than the first time you turn on your computer after you've successfuly built it. Anyway, as soon as my friend was finished building his, he turned on the machine, and I kid you not, the motherboard caught on fire! the details of how we stopped the small fire alude me at this point, but after we finally finished putting it out... he turned it on again, and it worked perfectly!
Seriously though, at this point of the so called "OS arms race" are we at all surprised that MS is doubling up on anti-linux, anti-oss tripe?
Let their business managers waste hours on unreadable flow charts that disprove linux's viability, who cares? I'll be coding trying to make the community a better place for people who want a choice!:)
On a side note: I'd like to see a little more optimism in our community. I've seen a bit too much "Linux doesn't do that, I hate it because X" for my taste. I'm not saying everyone should "Quit bitching and start coding", but it would be nice if we attacked problems with optimism and acceptance instead of negativity and cynicism.. just my 2 cents.
Free (as it's referred in FSF rhetoric, or libre) doesn't imply no cost. It only implies that once you have the information, you are free to do with it is as you please. Freedom of information once it's obtained is the key. The publishers of the book have decided that they want monetary compensation for a hard copy of their book, so pay up if you really want one. Once you have a copy, you're free to copy, repeat or whatever the text of that book as you see fit.
Sure, the copying of text from a book to a computer is highly less convenient than downloading a tar ball and distributing it on gnutella, but the freedom is there just the same.
As I remember it in the book, during the battle of Helm's Deep, Legolas and Gimli were actually dualing for who had the higher orc kill count.. I found myself laughing out loud reading some of it. It seems even Tolkien himself even enjoys a little humour every now and then =)
(It's amazing that restaurants don't blame home cooks for the recession, stealing the recipes that they use, and using them free at home! can you see the analogy?)
The big and unignorable difference being the cook actually remakes the product from scratch with his own bare hands. I _really_ don't want to imagine a 15 year old in the basement of his mother's house trying to recreate the latest Britney Spears.. <shudder>
Well, the way I read it, it wasn't meant to blame gaming for his death, but mainly to find the humour/sadness in the fact that someone would die for 86 hours of nonstop gaming =).
I have written a few of my own open source projects, so I hope I don't come off as totally naive here, but..
It's high time people stopped complaining about what people do in their spare time and give away for free.
This makes sense.. but there's a paradox. I agree with the spirit that volunteer based projects shouldn't be bothered with silly complaints about stability, features, etc.. But the problem is that users demand these kinds of things no matter if the program is being backed by the largest corporation, or coded by a 13 year old in the basement of his grandmother's house.
It seems that the main linux battle cry in the past year or so has been "Desktop Viability". To acheive this goal, (whether you care about it or not), Unfortunately SOMEONE should be held accountable for these requests, otherwise linux on the desktop will never thrive, for the simple fact that there's no one who "cares".
This is where we get to corporations, and their role in the linux community. Companies like Redhat and Mandrake have added so much value and professionalism to the linux marketplace, it's nothing short of amazing. With their paid developers and support, these companies are giving users the "accountability" that they can count on.
So the short of it is, I agree with this in spirit, but if any of us want linux to become the OS of choice for everyone else, SOMEONE needs to be listening, and making changes as the users request.. and it seems Redhat has taken that responsibility.
As a side note, the hard work and dedication of many non paid developers have also made linux what it is today, and they definately deserve a great big Thank You! =)
2) all they make is platforming HUNTING games anyway...gather 100 coins, barrels, whatever.
Actually, they also made a pretty good fighting game series called Killer Instinct.. I thought the combo system in that game was killer, and I wasted many an hour on it =)
That kinda defeats the purpose of text messaging though.
SMS is really meant for those times when you want to contact someone and you can't make alot of noise.. like in the back of a lecture hall, or in the middle of a movie. (or at least this is when I've found it most useful)
As if it wasn't bad enough that we have one of the highest IT unemployment rates in the country, The humidity here can make you sweat through your clothes after sitting in it for 15-20 minutes in 80 degree weather, and I've lived here all my life.

Other than that, Texas is a nice place to live:P

Yes and no.
If you're making a fully 2d game.. (or a not so featureful 3d game)sure it's no problem. The big problem now days is the "new and extended" 3d support that comes with DirectX.
Sure OpenGL works, but it's extremely lacking in comparison to DirectX. ( I would much rather have it the other way around -- but that's just not the truth unfortunately.) What the gaming industry really needs is either an updated version of OpenGL, or perhaps a new 3d standard that all can abide by.
...despite producing an award-winning Linux distribution that is a solid competitor to both UNIX and Window$, the Mandrake Linux distribution's short-term future is in jeopardy due to a simple factor: money.
Ok.. I'll take for granted that most linux users absolutely abhor Microsoft, and their flagship product Windows. But, putting the tongue-in-cheek $ at the end of Windows just shows how much even the most user friendly of Linux companies have to grow up.
I also found it mildly amusing that they use a dollar sign, and later on in the same sentence, they say their problem is money.
Don't get me wrong, I'm using Mandrake Linux 8.2 Beta 4 on my desktop right now.. it has a few bugs to iron out, but for the most part it's a rock solid distro, and I've greatly enjoyed my experience with it, and previous Mandrake releases in the past. But, if Linux is too ever be taken seriously in the business world, we need to act like adults here.. not teenagers with a silly grudge.
God damn. The hype is warranted. The wait was worth it. But 12 months for the next one? At least I have my copy of FFX to keep me occupied during maybe 40 hours of the next 8,760 or so
Actually.. if you sleep 8 hours a night.. (365 * 8 = 2920) around 5,840 hours to go
This is why linux is so great in general.

You are most certiainly correct. What I sad was mainly for humour purposes though, pointing out that the language we use contradicts itself =P
So let me get this straight:
We've come so far ahead in technology that we now have Recordable Read Only Memory!?
Maybe I should invest in that frozen hell stock after all..
Is knowing you downloaded The 3 ISOs before it was posted on slashdot.
Fortunately, none of them seem to have been used fraudulently.
In other news, it seems that slashdot's favorite non tech related website had a surge of 2.2 million account signups in the span of a week.
If you don't mind, I'll play devil's advocate...
:(
What happens when someone decides to be an ass and rip all your 100 dollar bills to shreds? No more money
We found a witch may we burn him?
;)
<Crowd Chants: Burn him!>
Anonvmous, do you weigh the same as a duck?
MS, GPL, FUD.. :).

Couldn'tve done better myself

I think you're missing the point.

Aww, lighten up a bit.

This sets a good precedence for DRM and MS's new security model..
OTOH, is this a big surprise? <cackles evilly> =)
Well, the way I read it, it wasn't meant to blame gaming for his death, but mainly to find the humour/sadness in the fact that someone would die for 86 hours of nonstop gaming =).
YMMV of course

What was our posterboy doing in 1991? That's right, posting to alt.sex about his fave porn films.
Who in the hell cares? Judging someone by saying they look at porn is about as justifiable as being surprised if a guy tells you he masturbates.
