Well as long as slashdot's giving free advertising to bands now... Mine's been up creative commons for 4 years now... check it out http://www.subatomicglue.com/
There certainly has been bands puttig up music way before that as well. Is this news? or free advertising
>> On that subject, what's to become of the network? Can eMule continue to run without eDonkey?
couldn't eMule create servers and get people to run them?
Does anyone know the legal of running a eMule/eDonkey server? is it legal, what does it _do_ (store, transmit, etc...), can it be run decentralized at all? how did edonkey run for so long with this server model without being litigated? (I always thought it was a combination of p2p and the server just brings the peers together)...
Last I checked, eDonkey had adware. eMule is completely free. Because of that, who was using eDonkey anyway?
p2p programs should be created by groups that love to code them, not by companies. nothing good will come of it (adware, pay per download, etc..) if a company runs the service.
make it completely peer to peer, free download, and it will be good. any hint of money, no one will use it.
if there is money involved, it better be a slick service with fast reliable downloads, it better suggest what I might like (and be right about it)...
pure decentralized free-for-all p2p, like I said, IMHO be free, created by hobbiests not companies....
really. _THE_ augmented reality lab? you're not the only one. there are many.
holodeck? no way, you haven't come close to the technology needed to implement this. It's a need application of projection display technology, but a complete holodeck experience is way off.
you'll need:
- rear projected (or surface painted OLED array) is need to prevent shadows from screwing up the image
- force feedback that doesn't impede free movement (even a treadmill or Matrix pod could attempt this, but where's yours? granted no one knows how to solve this problem using any of these techniques). we're light years away from true star trek force feedback happening in the air around you.
- generic software for the simulation environment, physics, AI, scenario management, security. we have a lot of this in games, but none of it has been brought together for holodeck purposes. at best we have some very crude specialized programs for engineering and architectural walkthrough. there's games, but they don't handle the display (visual and haptic) devices yet. granted, the software is probably closest.
- market. you need a product that will sell. that mesns it must be inexpensive enough for joe blow. you also need to catch joe blow's attention. that means the setup must be easy to setup, and not so huge that joe blow's wife and friends will ridicule him for filling up the house with gear.
- smart input devices. can you voice big concepts in small sentances to the computer and have it know what you're talking about? ok, step back. what about simple input devices. there's the twiddler, there's eye movement tracking. ok, so we have some viable options for beta 1 of the holodeck. what about reliable (and mass market) movement tracking? that's not available, and people have been trying for years.
does anyone know how well Windows audio apps (i.e. fruityloops, reason, cakewalk, logic, soundforge, buzz) work on systems like this?
1.) do they work at all 2.) what if anything is usually broken 3.) what's the latency like? can it get down to super low latency we expect from things like ASIO?
ow, that all sounds expensive. when will laptops reach sub $500? I just want a 3year-old tech laptop that I can do simple stuff like code and email. Shouldn't that be cheap? I've searched but haven't found anyone selling cheap/oldtech laptops... maybe the old tech isn't much cheaper than the new tech?
I'm guessing used or refurbished would get the price down, but I'm not wild about that. I guess I really want a brand new laptop with tech from 3 years ago... just a simple appliance.
(wow, you paid $2500 for a computer? ouch! 3 years ago I seem to remember building them for under $700 (amdxp1900))
anyone plan to use this feature? really... there have been support for features like this in the past, but they've been largly ignored. hardware bezier or nurbs come to mind. art creation using these methods isn't there, artists don't want to give up the level of control over the content.
why would I want the system to determine my surface when I can tweak it out exactly the way I want? Both will run the same, or close enough... especially on xbox 360, we don't need any 64k demos...
I started using the Subversion (SVN) source control tool at home instead of CVS (they have convert scripts to convert the old CVS repos)... I use it to store about 2GB of sound and art data as well as source code and configuration files for my system, basically anything I might want to get a previous version.
My frontend is TortoiseCVS, which is integrated in the explorer windows - which makes for a really easy and intuitive interface.... No more synchronizing two separate windows. Just use explorer, very simple.
It handles binary files automatically (by autodetection using heuristics on the data and through configurable mime types), and stores binary diffs so your database doesn't get bloaty. In the recent 1.2 version of SVN they've added locking to the databgase in case you're working with others on binary (not-mergable) files.
For linux there's GUIs as well if any of you do that thing... And there's other options than just Tortoise on Windows...
They support several database formats including Berkley DB, as well as a filesystem database (similar to what cvs used)...
Access can be local filesystem, or remote over WebDAV (http) or over SSH (what I'm using, it's secure, encrypted, good!)...
TortoiseSVN even comes with a graphical merge tool (TortoiseMerge).
If you're looking for source control, I recommend Subversion. It's free, cross platform, and awesome... I would almost recommend to everyone, but I still have some features I still want to test before going that far... They still need to release 1.2 final (write-locking for binary files), and TortoiseSVN needs to support the locking feature in the 1.2 client...
Every single/. article about alternative energy gets posts from people dissing it because it can't do it all. Where did this requirement come from? Is single-sourcing all of our energy even desirable? Is it possible? Where does this stupid meme keep coming from?
Maybe no one is saying one has to supply all energy. Maybe instead they are saying that one has to be economically feasible. Cost per Watt has to be below a certain amount otherwise people will keep using cheaper fuels...
I'm guessing this means that maintanence and replacement of solar cells keep the price steady otherwise wouldn't the expense of the solar panels drop off after the solar plants are all installed and operating for some time?
I wish there was RHP instead of PHP... The R would be for "ruby" of coarse.
Having been programming Ruby now for several months, I prefer it to Perl and the very similar PHP... Just go read the first few pages of the ruby book for why this language is so much cooler than others.
PHP is awsome for integrating HTML and code with their syntax though, and I'd love to see this in Ruby....

eDonkey wasn't very good anyway. sorry to say. eMule rocks!
you just have to forward two ports on your NAT... it's easy, and then everything works.
50,000 years, that's some time capsule. what will the primitive ape men in the future think of us?
imagine us getting a 50,000 year old capsule _today_ from some ancient (but far more advanced than us) civilization.
good point, from now on please interpret my reply with "you're" replaced by "they are"
sorry for the slip.
and yeah, I'm kind of sick of the holodeck propaganda, it just isn't anywhere near.

yeah, but who needs internet explorer?
we all use firefox now right?
Has anyone used Ant with other languages besides Java?
If it's Java only, then I just don't care... scons is pretty neat for c/c++, haven't used it on other languages though.
this seems more cool for acquiring models for games and film...

what makes it sexy is when hundres of people bitch about a problem, then some hacker realizes they too can be everyone's hero if they step up...
how about now?
For those who are still frustrated with the CUPS GUI, how would you improve it?
do some research. see how M$oft and Mac does theirs.
Do that.

how long until someone write an algorithm to brute-force come up with the perfect essay.
I mean. the man wrote the fitness function. lets write the rest! bam, hit the GO button, you're done. auto pulitzer prize.
Right you are. I missed that part. :) Thanks, that's going to be cool.

the neuros plays oggs, and connects as a standard USB hard drive. I didn't need any software to plug it into Win2k or WinXP
