He was talking about density as it relates to reliability. I see no reason why a higher density tape would be any more prone to physical damage than the old tapes.
You're overlooking the fact that with higher density storage you can devote more bits to ECC -- I'm thinking the end will be a win in terms of both density AND reliability...
Funny you should mention that, since acording to wikipedia:
"Each draft sequence has been checked at least four to five times to increase 'depth of coverage' or accuracy. About 47% of the draft were high-quality sequences. The final version will have been checked eight to nine times giving an error rate of 1 in 10,000 bases."
Which means that there will be an estimated 300,000 errors in the project.
Titanium is pretty noble... less so than graphite, but the almost the best you're going to get without using gold or silver. I guess the point here is that CF will probably do a number on almost any structural metal.
I'm sure the NSA could get their hands on the data if they wanted to
The thing that pisses me off about this whole scenario is that Verizon wants to charge ME $5 per statement to get my old phone records. Every online account I have takes old records down after 3-36 months, so I end up having to make local copies... If I do pay the research fee for the old records, they send me a paper copy which, in my mind, defeats the purpose of online statements.
Yes, thieves will always target weakest link. I saw a think on TV where they hung out in a parking lot writing down VINs and asking people their names "for a survey". Then they would go to the dealer and social-engineer a newly cut key out of them. By the time the owners got back from the mall, the camera crew was able to demonstrate how easily they could have stolen the car.
That is not true. If someone says "I'll give you support", then they owe you support. Now, I don't know the details of this particular situation, but it seems to me that making a channel called "Come here for X support" is an implicit agreement to provide support. It is perfectly reasonable to be surprised when you enter that channel and nobody wants to help you.
I think it's ludicrous to hang out in a support channel and be surprised that people expect you to give them answers! Instead, go hang out in "This channel is for people who are interested in X and like to harrass newbies".
But don't for a moment assume you are owed the privilege of support from them.
I generally agree with you, but in this case they were in a support channel. If somebody sets up a support channel, it's reasonable to expect to get support there. At the very least, you deserve not to get berated.
I think all the people replying to your post "you should get a station wagon" are missing the point. 2 or more kids??? The world population just passed 6.5 billion. We don't need any more stinkin' kids! Think about how many resources each kid will consume, including the apparent requirement of you to purchase an SUV. Ok, so you already have the kids and I guess you can't kill them. And I guess you have a right to pursure... uh happiness or something. So just get a station wagon ok?
I don't necessarily have a problem with using something other than "American". However, USian is just silly. First of all, how the hell do you pronounce it? You-ess-ee-an? Use-ee-an? Second, is there a reason to use something else? Is ANYONE confused by the term? Do Canadians want to claim the term for themselves? I didn't think so. Finally, I think people should, in general, be called what they want to be called. In the same way you wouldn't call a guy named Richard "Dick" unless he asks you to, don't call black guys "niggers", and don't call Americans "USians".
Of course, the brand hasn't changed. The brand is still IBM (and Lenovo is allowed to use the IBM brand for 5 years after the sale of the business). So what I find interesting is that even though the brand is the same, people are still jumping ship. Lenovo paid a lot for the IBM and Thinkpad brands, and it seems they overestimated the gullibility of the high-end consumer (i.e. most people laying out that kind of cash for a computer are aware that it only says "IBM" on it because Lenovo paid to use the brand). Perhaps that's why they are starting to target lower-end customers -- those customers may not be savvy enough to know that it isn't really IBM anymore.
With that said, I just bought a new X60s. I think its fabulous, and comparing it to my older T42, I doubt Lenovo changed IBM's design much. I can't say that future models will be as good, but for now I don't belive that the quality has fallen.
Luckily, the automobile industry sells pretty good lightning-protection boxes. They even take the work out of going from here to there! And as an added benefit, they consume gasoline, which makes government buddies very rich.

That's why you should get a magneto-optical tape drive!

Yeah, that is sweet. Too bad the translation is so horrible!

More like 1-800-BREATHE-SHIT
Man, I thought you were trolling for a second before I actually looked up the details!
I think you mis-stated the premise. Instead of "People bitch and moan about X because Y", it's really "People bitch and moan."

Although you can probably disable any of these "features" pretty easily if you are on slashdot.
Sounds like I've found my next hobby :-P

Of course, you don't need to defrost modern refrigerators anyways, so...
His point was that he doesn't expect them all to be linearly independent.

Awesome! You got 23.5 hours of sleep a night!
So... you're saying I should invest in the company that prints stock certificates?
Um, GK?
You, I guess.
