The "stormvloedkering" you mentioned, isn't it like a massive gate in the ocean?
That's right. It's also a big tourist attraction. I live in the south of Holland and for a project that I did for my company for 3 months I passed by there everyday, it's always a wonderful and impressive sight.
Me being a Dutchman 2, I can honoustly say you're giving 'us' too much credit. Pretty much the only thing the dutch have an unique knowledge of is the battle vs. the sea. Most parts of Holland are about 16 metres under sea level, which can cause a mighty flood (like the one in 1953) if the country is not protected well enough.
The 'stormvloedkering' (dutch name of huge project to protect holland from the water) is still considered to be any incredible piece of technology/engineering even tody, even though it was build in the late 50's.
Tunnels & bridges however are more scrares in the Netherlands and I cannot imagine that we have a big advantage over countries like Norway, Canada and maybe the US that have build huge structures of that kind. One of the most inspiring phrases from the time Holland struggled with the sea is: 'Luctor et Emergo' (Ik worstel en kom boven / I struggle and emerge)
The USA is far from perfect, but it's the best place around.
Most people would disagree with you though. Even though I don't live there, Sweden is apparantly the best place to live (all things considered: safety, well-being, child-care, employment, environment). I myself am from The Netherlands which is very ok and scores high on the things that define happyness for an average human being. (see Sweden) I have been to the US a couple of times and I always liked it there; lots of space (between cities), nice people, and so on. But the US is also a country where there is much poverty, much more then is being shown to the world via TV (maybe even to you). I always have the strange feeling that in the US less is cared about an individual then in many countries in Europe. Some People still have to take a second morgage on their house if their kid gets cancer. (An extreme example maybe, but I've heard it first hand from Americans I've worked with) It struck me like this; If you live in the US and you're doing well, then you're doing really well, if you're doing not so well, you're doing bad. The US is no doubt technically superior, I immideatly believe you... but does that make it the best country to live in?
The Netherlands is far from perfect, but I'm not going anywhere.
Although I am mighty curious why it is such a big deal to you why I posted 2 links, the reason is that some people may be interested in the slashdot community discussions that the first 2 initiated. That's all.
For instance I write free software which by definition is an "amateur" activity since I don't get paid for it but I'd really like to think it's not "amateurish" and crappy!
Actually, I use your software and it's really amateurish and crappy.
To this point in Microsoft's history, they have done NOTHING that I can think of out of the kindness of their hearts. Everything can be written up as enough to get by with as much money as they can take from customers and carry to the bank.
You mean like, i.e. contributing 25 billion to charity and health care?
I notice how it always brings a smile to my face when I see that little borg drone in the top index of frontpage newsitems. The thought of having a 300+ replies in an immense MS Flamewar to read through just makes me a happy man. This is why I read slashdot.
Does anybody ever experience the phenomenon where you close a browser with slashdot in it, but you keep internetting and the first new browserpage you open is slashdot again, not realizing it was the one you just closed?
Pluto is comparable in size with our own moon, and it has a moon of its own
That's true, but the mass of Pluto is just slightly larger then it's moon. That why Pluto is actually called a 'doubleplanet', because Pluto and it's moon (Sharon) revolve around each other.
Technically I could be a complete ass about this post, since comments (also the ones containing FUCK) would never actually be in the binaries, as they are ignored during compilation.

So what the heck has this to do with Shakespeare?
