    Geez, XKCD should win the Pulitzer Prize for this graphic. If a picture is worth a KiloWord, this is worth a MegaWord of explanation. This should be required viewing in all 8th Grade science classes.

    In 1990 and 2010, Saturn and Jupiter were in Superior Conjunction. In 1973, that condition had just passed.

    Any chance that the Allais Effect with Jupiter, Sun, Saturn syzygy might be at work here? I know the Allais Effect is a quirky, difficult-to-replicate condition, but perhaps this is another data point.

    The Macs not only operate longer over the years, but in those years, they don't get crufted up and worthlessly slow. My 5 year old Powerbook G4 will out surf a 2 year old Dell laptop in this office any day.

    If you buy a new machine every 2 years anyway, maybe the Windoze will cost you less. But if you want to keep the machine running, and *gasp* pass down to your kids, then buy a Mac.

    Once we have this Unique ID, a primary key in a Person's Table, many avenues are open to us! And high time...
    1. Use the card, dongle, RFID chip, W/E to authenticate into your computer! No more stupid passwords!
    2. Use it log into your ISP, so that they can know it's you, and ensure your safety on the internet. Mostly by providing the public portion of your identity everywhere you go, which hackers will not be able to duplicate. No more can they get into your bank accounts, those cute 'Site Keys' which show pictures that only you will know have been obviated.
    3. Let's be frank. No one cares bout Pr0n anymore. surf away. And instead of surfing anonymously, surf "Securely ID'd". That is so much better.
    4. Find and banish the haX0rz, KraX0rz, Phishers and Nigerians! If they can't get online without identifying themselves, they'll go back to traditional crime.
    5. The best feature of all of this is the "Net License" we can keep anyone harmful off the wires and leave us good people to surf without a care.

    The primary reason stated for not putting a camera was the viewing angle from a device located beneath your chin, that is on your lap or in your cradling arm. IMHO, double-chin is platform independent.

    The only way around that is to hold the device up in front of your face (NOT!), or having a cool War of the Worlds micro gooseneck. But, then again, if I had one of those, I could thing of far more interesting uses. ;-)

    To quote^H^H^H^H^Haparaphrase an IBM commercial: "...the greatest thing since sliced bread. But the person who invented sliced bread didn't invent bread. He didn't even invent slicing."

    Take all of the "like..." statements you made, which are all over the map, and put it all in one place. "putting bunch of existing things all together"... is the revolution.

    Saying there is nothing new here is like saying that you take some rockets, some heat shielding, some wings and make the space shuttle. No biggie.

    In 1994, I wrote a rant to my friends telling to "get encrypted or get pwned*". Paranoia of that day (new prez, newer congress, Blue laws, Waco, Ruby Ridge, OK city yet to happen) We went through a bit of wrangling to get PGP keys and such. We were not n00bs, but it still seemed more difficult than it should have been. We encrypted our emails, and even our chats... for a while. When we realized that nothing we were saying mattered to anyone interesting (pick a 3 letter acronym), we stopped bothering.

    But now, it seems like delusional paranoia to think we need to encrypt our every day stuff. I still have that rant on file, and it seems pretty kooky in retrospect. Having to explain the wisdom of encryption to someone who can't open a .DOT file comes off as wacko.


    *no, I didn't use that word.

    Ok, I know we can't know how many attempts were NEVER made. But, how many ATTEMPTS have been thwarted by TSA screening? Any?
