That's great and all but let's also hear about what's happening with Nvidia's contributed RSX. When will it his 45nm and be included in the PS3? I'd reckon that a 45nm Cell and 65nm (or heaven forbid 90nm!) in the PS3 would still generate a whack of heat. I understand that Nvidia has their latest iteration of GPU's coming out at 45nm so I wouldn't think this to be a stretch. Any official word?

  8. on my "personal" computer! on Adobe Quietly Monitoring Software Use? · · Score: 3, Insightful
I purchase software that is intended for a particular use on my "personal" computer (whether it be PC or Mac). I do NOT purchase software so the vendor can track my usage, include 3rd party tool bars or other. Software that is not network related should not have any network component involved whatsoever. Why should image editing software have any network functionality whatsoever, I am not forking over my hard earned $$ for this. If I want to download and install an update you can notify me via email or other, I don't want your app dialing home to check for an update and checking my system stats and usage.

Software companies are now clearly overstepping the boundaries of acceptability. This has behavior subtly creeping it's way into applications in recent years. They start with the "do you want to this application to check for updates automatically"? Then comes "activation", then 3rd party bundled toolbars - Acrobat reader, among many other non-Adobe apps come with opt-in 3rd party toolbars which you can opt out of but WTF is it doing there in the 1st place? I won't install any app that has such software bundled in for fear that it's doing something despite my opting out of the toolbar.

These companies will not learn their lesson and back off until we have sufficiently voted with our wallets. I will say that Adobe will never again get a dollar out of my wallet.

I hope this seriously impacts their sales and image on the market as it seems this is the only way they will ever learn anything. If everyone simply shrugs and waits for an MS patch to be released it will be par for the course like with all their other products - "please pay to beta test our code, we'll get it right one day".

Thankfully I have my QNAP TS-201 NAS (1TB x 2 RAID1) to tied me over. The wife's Time machine backups work flawlessly to it.

I had planned to purchase an iMac for the wife but was quite dismayed about the fact that you cannot easily remove the hard drive (only the memory). If there was a problem with the system that required sending it in for service I would certainly not send in the hard drive for the apple folks to have their way with. Data security much?

I have spoken with a few of my Mac pals about this and they didn't seem to see any problem with it but they are of the type that don't give a rat's ass about their data. I would seriously suggest that Apple allow for the hard drive to be easily removed (without voiding the warranty). I can't believe that the Apple user base aren't making a stink about this already.

I hope you realize that if you plan to leave Japan after this beings you will still be forced to submit to the biometric check. This is why I don't plan to leave/enter Japan during this time (yes, I'm currently in Japan so I may be here for a while!). I wonder how long it will be before they start forcing foreigners within Japan to submit to this as well.

Another thing to ponder is Japan's shoddy record of keeping such sensitive data secure. In the past a lot of Police records have been shared via P2P clients (Winny) on PC's of horny porn surfing officers (real professionals!). Just imagine your biometric data getting dumped onto the net for all to download. The scandal this would start is unthinkable.

Japan really ought to take a step back and rationalize this. But Japan being what it is (nation of mindless sheep...sorry to say), it won't.

  18. Best Buy laziness...... on Best Buy Customer Gets Box Full of Bathroom Tiles Instead of Hard Drive · · Score: 4, Interesting
here in Japan all purchases of electronics (actually any mid to high priced items) are verified at the register before the transaction takes place. By this I mean the cashier attendant opens the box in front of the customer and verifies all the contents. While they do not turn on the item and verify it's working condition they do show the customer that they are not purchasing a stack of tiles.

This simply illustrates how the US is way behind in terms of customer service and corporate policies. If management cannot think to implement such a simple policy to protect themselves and the customers they serve, they deserve whatever negative press they get. They will get no sympathy from me for their laziness and ignorance.

I know that Apple will likely never do so but I say unleash OSX for standard x86 hardware. Sure, this flies in the face of Apple's current business model but this would be a HUGE nail in the coffin for Microsoft. Sure there would be a hit to their hardware sales but there is a huge untapped market of people out there who will never buy and Apple branded piece of hardware (i'm one of them). They need to look at this in terms of the long run.

If they were to do this there would be mass conversions on a scale that would have Ballmer throwing Chair's out the top of Microsoft Tower and Bill Gates hair turning white. After a few years when the tide has shifted and the majority of home users were on OSX, Apple could then make inroads to the corporate world where execs, admins and users alike would welcome them with open arms.
