Seriously. If this is where we've arrived, where public officials try such a blatant lie...their incompetence is unmeasurable! Please, please, won't the aliens take me home?!?
Right on. I don't even know what this question is up here for. I've never had this problem...but I have had to reinstall Windows a gazillion times.
Ha!
The blurb mentioned CSS, SVG, and XHTML as example web-standards. Truly, those standards are in a waiting-phase. SVG less so than CSS & XHTML. I think the genuinely interesting protocols & standards are the ones less tied to the browser and Internet Explorer.
For instance, Semantic Web standards like the recently-approved RDF and FOAF will be interesting to watch. Also interesting is how the instant-messaging protocols will shake out. Personally I want to see the XMPP standard used by Jabber win, but I honestly don't know where it will end up.
The point is, there are many many web protocols and standards. The innovation will continue for some time longer.
Clearly you are not drinking enough if you think that reason and logic enter into the equation when deciding whether or not to get another cocktail.
Amateur.
Who would even want to be part of the "record"? The NY Times is a moribund old fool. I want to know about what is "new"...not what is "new to the NY Times". What a piece of garbage....they're doomed.
Please!
I'm so sick-and-tired of germophobes!
I grew up in a trailer house full of dogsh1t and I swear that I never get sick.
If I had grown up with a germophobe for a parent I'd probably need to live in a bubble on account of my underdeveloped immune system.
"I agree that Sun would have to have to do something"
Couldn't this have read
"I agree that Sun would have to do something"
Sheesh! This blurb is nearly un-friggen-readable as it appears now. Could the proofreaders/editors wake up or learn english or something....arggggg
You can forget about more pay. The untold truth is that nobody outside of the top 10% of income earners has increased their income in the past 30 years.
The bubble was your last great chance. It's pretty much downhill from here.
On the bright side, Boston like NY, LA, SF probably is in the midst of a BIG housing bubble. Shortly that monument to optimism will come crashing down and your rent will fall, slightly.

Ah Stipe, I remember thee well!
Thorin and Flagg! Ye died honorably enough!
Cedric, thieving and laughing!
If I could quit my job and DM all day long, I'd do it!
Come on people! Is there any surprise here really? Look at the keyboard you are typing on. It is filthy. I think it's obviously in my best interest to keep my filthy little button pressers on one and only one set of buttons.
Monogamy!
When I was taking AI in college, the prof told our class that of approximately 900 Computer Science PhD graduates in the previous year, M$ hired 600 of them. This is a huge reason why it's hard to go up against them, and it makes me wonder why they haven't taken over the whole world.
But they have taken over our dollar.
Dude chill about the "whoring".
And the books recommended aren't even that good. They're bullcrap "management" books, not books about the nuts and bolts of programming.
We're so screwed when people have become so stupid that they are unable to maintain a password.
I still wonder why we don't have a little keychain swipe card thingy to login to our computers.
Sure everybody has to work for a living, but what if your job was simply to spew untestable statements about the perceptions of other people. Then you would be Jakob Nielsen.
Those who can, do.
Those who cannot, tell us they can and take money from us like those who can. But Nielsen leaves me holding an empty sack.
Go all or nothing man! That. Is. Your. Problem.
What is a computer good for?
Calculations.
Systems.
Storage.
Communication.
Keep it simple, stupid!

Linux is all you need.
But I DO like Windows XP.
Seriously folks. Premise #1: PCs do not matter. Premise #2: What monopoly? Premise #2.5 Who cares?
Not to be trite, but I am happy that our government is "unequipped" to strip a private enterprise of all its sovereignty. Which is the only "solution" to the supposed problem raised by Cringely. To me, that guy sounds like a wacko inventing a problem so he's got something to write about in his blog. Serious.
Premise #3: Just use Linux and tell your family to just use Linux. The rest of the world will catch on eventually. Premise #4: Companies don't commit suicide, people do. Until you've mastered Premises 1 through 4 I don't care what kind of half-formed and twisted ideas you write.
If we're going to have a speed limit then let's do everything possible to make it work. It's really unfair to me, a law-abiding driver, to see somebody go 10 mph over the limit and then watch him hit all the green lights because he's speeding. I mean REALLY! So let's show him a red light and then fine them big time.
Otherwise let's just get rid of the speed limit and start to make cars that drive themself. Then everybody could go 200 mph and we'd have far fewer accidents. Seriously!
I for one thought search was going to be stalled for quite some time. I think this is quite an important development. I'd have to see it a bit more but to be able to say "start with a MU-368-whatever"..."now take off that fin"..."add a flange around X to Y"...etc...to be able to query like this should be useful in any number of contexts...very cool...
I met a guy who changed his name to "1047" and he was called "10" (one-zero) for short. A friend of mine knew him a bit better than I did, and told me that the name on his checks was truly 1047.
Not that this guy is a model for emulation. I think the first time my buddy met this guy he stepped into my friend's shop wearing his pajamas and pushing along a walker....he was fairly elderly at the time....he was also in the VA Hospital (maybe for mental problems???) just out for a stroll.
Judging by the responses I've seen, slashdotters are a horny bunch. I think it has diminished my opinion of the opinions I read here. Sucks.

Just so long as my supply of nitrous oxide doesn't deplete, the impending helium shortage is copacetic.

One man's switching cost is another man's hobby. The MS antitrust suits are still total BS, althought I'm basically on board with Windows haters.
