to try to (further) militarize space.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the actual proposed funding was much more linked to the Back From the Dead SDI 'peace sheild' Death Star that the Republicans have been creaming for ever since they first saw Star Wars.
The funniest show I ever saw was the Daily Show the day the DIRTY BOMB!!!!! 'news' hit the corporate media circuit (2 weeks after they detained the guy).
Forget get Emmys that damn show deserves a Pulitzer!
You want nuke powered spaceships?
Find the material in asteroids, mine it and proceess it on the Moon, or somewhere even further away from the Earth.
Here's an idea, imagine a 9-11 type terrorist sabatoge of some radioactive rocket blasting off from Florida....aa
Afterall the 9-11 terrorists didn't BUILD the airplanes, they just took over them and used them to destroy.
You mean the way the TWO Space shuttles came crashing to Earth?
Launches blow up ALL THE TIME. When they're not manned, it's no big deal and barely gets covered.
Now a rocket with a little URANIUM or worse, PLUTONIUM..... THAT woudl get news overage.
Mike Myers? nah.
Ford Prefect - Ben Stiller or Steve Buscemi
Arthur Dent - John Favareau or William H Macy
Zaphod Beeblebrox - Vince Vaughn
Trillian - Kirsten Dunst
Slartibartfast - Ian McKellan (why not, he's in everything else) or maybe Charlton Heston - if he can remember his lines.
Marvin - Brad Garrett
Of course, the movie really should have an all Brit cast.
Maybe the BBC twits will do this one right. I wasn't too impressed withthey're lates incarnation of Dr. Who, and the fact that Douglas Adams isn't around to possibly work on the movie kind of concerns me.
...just about everything on the island was destroyed.
Wodul you like if if your town/city got wiped out by a natural disaster and all anyone could talk about was the fact that the phone service was down?
Apparently EVERYTHING on the island got wiped out.
How about if a Hurricane wipes out you town/city, with only 1 casualty but every building destryoed, and all anyone can talk about is weather or not your phone service is down?
My understanding is that this is a misinterpretation of Tolkien.
He disagreed that his stories were Allegory, because he felt that Allegory would have a direct one to one correspondence between elements in the work of art and what every is being referenced.
I don't think he minded looking for deeper meaning, but specifically what he didn't like was, for instance, people sayign that the ring REPRESENTED this specific thing or that specific thing.
I cancelled my digital cable about a year ago because I realized that most of the 'programming' is just infomercials and RERUNS. The new season comes along and many cable station proudly announce that they'll be showing Friends, or 24 or ER or 7 days a week, is if showing last year's Broadcast tv shows was a major accomplishment.
Even on movie channels they replay the movies so much that they become re-runs almost immediately.
The turner channels TBS and TNT really amped up this process when they began showing the same 'new' (to basic cable) movies over and over again, and ANNOUNCING the fact as it it was something to be proud of!
I'm sorry but when a channel says that they'll be showing The Matrix Friday night and Saturday night and Sunday night that says to me that they don't have much programming on their channel - or they're skimping on product. Not the best wat to treat PAYING customers.
Between the reruns, the endless repeats, the incredibly annoying little video logos in the corner of the screens that channels do now, the butchering of the ending credits of movies - playing promos for OTHER shows (really loud) before a show has actually ended, the infomercials and the endles number of clones of the same shows, the number of actual decent quality choices is decreasing faster and faster, even as the number of channels increases.
So what is there to 'Tivo' anyway?
Put the frickin Original CD in the DVD player and shut the hell up!
Or Make a Music CD from the wav or shn file and THEN put the CD in the DVD player and shut the hell up!
If the original "lossless" files then you can skip the mp3 format all together and leave those of us without terabytes of storage space to enjoy out music libraries in peace.
You make a good point.
The again, for years the SPA, the RIAA and the MPAA have been publicly pushing the idea that anyone who gets a copy of something without paying for it is a Thieving Pirate, and anyone who assists them in obtaining the data (warez, mp3z, moviez) is Aiding Piracy.
The recently re-written intellectual property laws specifically make no differentiation between people who SELL unauthorized material and those who give it away for free.
For years (decades?) there's been a thriving community of Bootleg Music Collectors. Most of them traded material they had for other material. Most specifically did not sell the material they had - almost as a matter of principle. From what I've read, The Well, one of the first popular online communties grew in large part because of the activities of people trading Graeful Dead tapes.
This spirit is probably the same that motivates most of the release groups.
The were not money LAUNDERING operations for the venture capatilists.
They were PYRAMID SCHEMES for the venture capatilists, with the ipo as the big payoff.
A lot of the dot com babies were pushed to expand by their venture capatilists, who didn't really care about the companies' long term health.
Momentum, expand, expand, expand, get more funding, get some press, then do the ipo so that the VCs can cash out.
Just kick it 'Old School' and make tapes off the radio!
Just remember to be real quiet whe it's recording.
Maybe they can stop us from taking camcorders in to a movie theater, but they can't come into our bedrooms and take our cassette recorders away!
At least not yet.
The British and US 'intellignece' organizations largely function as partners.
The CIA isn't allowed to spy on US citizen domestically, so the CIA spies on UK citizens and MI5 (MI6?) spies on American citizens, when the two groups exchange data.
Quite a cosy little relationship for two of the most prominent "Free and Open" democracies in the world.
Saudia Arabia and Kuwait are both un-Democratic dictatorships.
It's clear that we need to invade, topple their regimes, and liberate their people, (AND their oil, while we're at it).
the nicotine-caffine double addiction rarely gets mentioned.
But most of the people I've known who smoke or use nicotine in other forms also drink coffee or Coke or Diet Coke, - usually together.
No! It will round up all the humans and use them as a power source!

Well I know Id take Cosa Nostra Pizza over Dominos any day.
I think that was a late ammendment to the DMCA.
So much for the artists and creators getting full credit for their created works.

This is probsbly just some backdoor attempt to boost the SDI budget and get Nukes into Space.
