ever watch a movie in a highschool or university class?
at work?
if you answered yes your in group B as well. If you answered no then your a loser who has no friends, no job, no education, and no ability to work a cassette recorder, so congrats.
just VNC into your home machine from work and join the queue. that way after you get home the game should be close to loading. when the queues were really bad (500+) in january i did that every day and had maybe a 10 minute wait at the most when i got home.
Somethings wrong with slashdot lately. 200+ comments all rated at 1 or 2?
Are there just not enough moderators? i know i havent had mod points in at least half a year. For the last week or so ive seen so many stories with hundreds of comments but few modded up. what gives?
First off look at this guys website. Looks like a shady direct marketing scam doesnt it? Or maybe its all the "make money NOW" texts and "poker manager" things that make me think this one is probably a spammer. Furthermore, you can see that on the page located here it looks like he might be playing the devils advocate. I quote:
Point DigiDroid at a start web site, use our batch job screen to tell it the kind of
data to be sought (.PDF,.DOC,.PPT,.XML,.ZIP,.MPG,.MP3,.SWF,.JPG,.GIF, ++)
and how deep to go. Then launch the probe!
interesting. so you copyright infringe websites. is that for making fake bank webpages or just scanning for mp3s for the RIAA.
But anyways back to the topic
"I'm not going to buy a song I've never heard.
You can hear the song fine on the normal radio or XM radio or even yahoo music-- free. If you want the high quality/fidelity version you have to pay for it."
Radio has ads. Ads are detremental to society and cause mental illness. The RIAA has already attacked netradio and forced alot of them into paying fees. Its morally right to fight the RIAA when they attacked netradio first. Furthermore, radio is controlled by clearchannel and the cartels and populated with crap.
"Matches are free.
Matches are not free. Although they be at no cost to you, they are in fact a marketing device designed to get you to buy flammable products such as cigs, firewood, etc. Their real cost comes out of the marketing budget of the company selling the flamable items. When you buy the flamable items a fraction of the gross goes to pay for the matches."
And radio songs are designed to sell shows, concert tickets, etc. This is where the band makes their money anyways, as the riaa takes most of the profit from CD sales. You have described exactly why music should be free. It sells the seats in the stadium when the band comes to town.
"Further, if you go into the convenience store and grab ALL the matches for yourself you will likely get a foot in your behind. They are for eveyrone, not just you"
thats being a dick. no one is saying be a dick. if i copy a file the other person still has that same file. If i copy a file and the source for some reason had +rw permissions on it and i deleted the file, then the analogies would match. Thats being a dick though.
"Water is free.
No, only rain is free. Normal water you have to pay for. It has costs associated with it such as laying the pipes that carry it or the cute plastic bottles holding it at the convenience store."
If you wanted to however, you could set up a rain or snow collection barrel. You dont actually pay for the water. You pay for the convience of having the water in a bottle or in your home tap. This is analogous to paying a flat rate for a connection/service. Does the water company care what i do with my water? nope. do they mandate i only drink it out of silver goblets? again no. Would i pay for near instant downloads of albums at a low flat rate monthly fee, with no restrictions on what i do with it? HELL YES. This kind of service does not exsist.
Personally im tired of downloading cammed videos and having the torrent take 5 days to complete, and die at 98%. Provide a service that offers superfast downloads and ill pay, same as for the utilities hookup for water. Ill even do one better and say it doesnt have to be flat rate at all. If it was like electricty where i payed per GB, that would also be fine. As long as its not near the price of current media and i can do whatever i wanted with the files, I have no problem with paying for better quality/service.
one last thing. Change copyright back to a resonable 15 years and make anything made before that (ie pre 1991) public domain. Then I will be happy.

"Things are changing and we Americans will be left with the jobs higher up in the food chain. Education replaces what we'd otherwise be left with learning for ourselves in a 9 to 5. It's inevitable and I stand by it when I say this is a good thing."
what a wonderful future! the immigrants get the low paying minimum wage jobs while everyone else has/gets to "get educated" to get the better jobs. ok, but you do know there is vastly more lower level minimum wage jobs than higher up jobs right? society is shaped like a pyramid. If you outsource the base then the new base will just move up to where you are.
think of it like this. if everyone goes to school and becomes the worlds greatest programmer, there will be way too many of them and all the rates that they charge will drop because someone can always throw in a lower quote.
you obviously have never had to take an entry level "unskilled" labour position to pay your rent or buy you food while your looking for that "job higher up in the food chain". Its a nice idea that ok well we can get all the imigrants to do the dirty work, but in reality, people from china and india have just as much motivation and drive to take your higher up in the food chain job, and fill it for themselves, as you do. (some would argue that they have more motivation because all they have had to do for their entire lives is work hard, while the western students were busy doing beer bongs and having promiscuous sex). I dont understand why you consider yourself special somehow and irreplaceable. That kind of position does not exsist. Not for individuals, and not for countries.
"Education replaces what we'd otherwise be left with learning for ourselves in a 9 to 5."
In this one phrase you've proven, without a doubt, that you are completely wrong. All the education in the world is useless without the experience applying that education in the real world. You cannot teach experience. Anyone who tells you different is selling something.
one last thing you should consider. just because you personally, find it below you to work for 20 or 25k a year, doesnt mean that everyone would. if services like labour ready were outsourced, how would the crackheads of your community get their fix? answer, they would jack you as your comming out of your sweet ass office job. If you destabalize the system and reduce the jobs available, more people get desperate. you cant just tell the working poor to get educated, even if their was some magic way for them to do so.
perhaps the point of backups wasnt to recreate individual users as that was deemed not a critical requirement of the backup strategy.
how would you, for instance, restore a customers account in an sql database when all you have is a full database backup with transaction logs?
you would do exactly what he was saying, youd rebuild another seperate copy of the database and manually fix the required tables on the live DB. the other option would be to tell the user to sod off which is probably alot less work.
I learned how to manage markets and capitalize on price fluctuations purely by banksitting in UO. It taught me very valuable lessons in buying and selling, including what a scam looks like and how to tell when the seller/buyer is inexperienced. All these skills have transfered over to my life.
I also noticed that I could add numbers together better, as well as creating fractions to divide up commodities solely in my head. It also teaches about investments and the value of knowing the market you are in completely.
"2.5 minutes....It takes less time to make a bag of microwave popcorn"
If you put a bag of popcorn in a 1000w microwave it takes _at least_ 4 minutes till the kernels stop popping. any less and you are really wasting kernels. you can probably see a bunch at the bottom of the bag. i would make a poit of checking next time.
It isnt a contest to see who can kill the most people. The grandparent was asking where all the radical christians are. I was merely pointing out that christianity doesnt need to have suicide bombers and embassy burners when they have a state war machine at their disposal which can arguably, do much more damage.
"Where are these "Christian" extremists exactly, and whose embassies are they burning?"
Nah muslims are poor. They can afford petrol bombs and IED's. Christians on the otherhand, fund companies like lockheed martin and then bomb whole countries into submission with their weapons. Who needs to raze an embassy when you can bomb whole regions and torture the ones that survive?
Ok ok.. but did you even SEE the cover of that book? The worn jacket all slinkily holding on by nothing more than the seams.... all those dog eared pages, that book had been AROUND - if you know what i mean - It was ASKING for it..
Um how can that be right? If someones not breathing thats the most important thing i would think. What good is a prim and proper tourniquet if the victims brain has died from lack of oxygen while you were applying it?
I use a program called netlimiter. works wonders for managing all connections out from the PC. Unfortunately, its not a firewall so you cant completely block apps from accessing the net. You can at least see whats trying to connect and throttle bandwidth by program.
Its also got graphs and shit which is nice to see where all my bandwidth is going over a month/year period. I just looked at their site and aparently the new version has advanced filtering and a firewall. I dont think id go for that as right now the version that i have is about 800k - 1mb and really has no annoying features. I generally load this program on any computer that i would be working on for more than a few days.
"Then some entrepreneur will notice that "hey, supply will drop off at this rate in a few years, and the price will shoot up. I can make a fortune if I just buy some now, hold it, and sell it in the future!""
Witness the result - The US goes into the middle east, terrorism shoots up all over the world, and the net quality of life gets knocked down a few pegs. Things are often more raw than a cold paper theory can predict.
"i submit that a physical object is not necessarily required for theft. if you're a gamer, does it incur your ire when someone steals from you in game?"
If you are deprived of the item then yes. No one is deprived of anything by making an exact copy. The only thing you could argue is the assumed profits that the record industry claims as a loss. I would then argue that no one has a right to profit.
"if you developed a neat idea and had it on your hard drive, would it bother you when someone copied it onto their USB drive, and distributed it or claimed it as their own?"
The key phrase there being "passed it off as their own". I am not pretending i wrote, stared in or directed the matrix simply because i copy a friends DVD of it. This is the one area that copyright SHOULD be used in. People should never be able to profit from others work. p2p isnt about profit, its about sharing culture.
"now, it may be true that you wouldn't spend $15 for a dvd copy of it, but would you pay $0.01 to see it, or download it?"
I would not pay per use, i would pay flat rate. Most people i know think along the same lines. Thats why most people have no problem paying a large monthly cable bill, but would be taken aback if you told them they had to pay per programme. Give me instant download of current and hard to find releases, with a database as big - nay.. bigger! - than the current torrent networks, and i will happily pay a monthly fee for that. Provided there is no DRM what so ever, and that the cartels stop abusing/suing/raping their customers. A good example, how could i possibly watch the programme battlestar galactica when it only airs in the UK? I cant legally, so what are my options then? Wait for the media companies to judge that i am worth showing it to? please... I will never be a slave to media companies ever again.
"you don't get to set the price that you pay for it."
Well actually i do. I am currently paying $0 dollars + time to see content, like BSG. So i have set a price. Would i see a movie like firewall in the theater? no. would i pay 1$ to download it? also no. See, their are some things that i would download that i would _never_ pay for. There is some things i would. The point is that it isnt offered in a way that is convenient enough for me. Driving to a theater when my car is currently broken, will not physically happen for instance. The other big thing people dont understand about cost is that movies are already bought and paid for by the time i get to download them. If the media industries stop turning a profit, they are free to stop producing content. Its gotten to the level that amature content can keep the pace with studio content anyways. I dare the MPAA to stop paying people to make movies. Who in their right mind would think that would stop movies from being made?
"not to get into a slashdot debate about intellectual property, but legally, a movie is, generally speaking, the property of Some Entity Not You. you can be sure that said Not You entity will not give you right or permission to obtain said movie without paying."
Once a story ( this is what movies are never forget that basic fact ) is released into the popular conciousness, i would argue, that it becomes societies property. This use to happen after ~15 years. Due in part to evil organizations such as disney, this no longer matters and is often forgotten. The point of copyright is to encourage society to move forward, Not to make a profit or lock up content so that people cannot enjoy, use, and benifit from it.
"not all theft is inherently immoral, mind you"
Good thing that this isnt theft, its copyright infringment.
"let's not kid ourselves about what we, fundamentally, are doing, alright?"
Disseminating and preserving culture so that the maximum members of society possible can learn lessons, and experience joy from stories, art, and music? I have never lost sight of this fact and will continue to defend open information exchange till the day i die. We are the modern day johnny appleseeds after all, seeding a library of alexandira's knowledge to the masses before the evil barbarian hordes lock it up forever.
firefox currently sitting at 0% cpu usage. perhaps you should upgrade your pentium 133:)\
seriously, the only thing i could think of is that if firefox ran out of ram and had to start using the pagefile, that would eat up tonnes of CPU. This would also effect other programs on the system. Are you sure you have enough ram in the machine? I assume you can replicate this bug on more than one machine right?
Ive had some sites crash firefox repeatidly but i cant think of any examples off hand.
