Why is this modded as flaimbait? It's perfectly valid. How many Linux users can't manage to use a screwdriver? It takes all of 30 minutes to build a computer... an hour if it's your first time... and you save money and end up with MUCH better components as a result.
Dell serves the broad consumer market, which isn't really ready for Linux. Or should I say, Linux isn't ready for that market.
Actually, I'm going to take my comment back. It's not that the apple computers aren't selling well. The point I wanted to make is the turnaround in company performance has MORE to do with the iPod peformance. Not just from a sales standpoint, but an image standpoint.
FWIW, from the latest 10-Q, sales this quarter compared to the same quarter last year show that desktop sales increased 65%, laptop sales increased 8%, and iPod sales increased 616%(!!).
I'm not going to flame you about Civics. I'd only mention that the Import tuner community has been doing their thing for more than a decade.
And I'm not sure how many young IT professionals are dropping $2500 on a Mac, when they could build or buy a comparable PC for a lot less. Young IT professionals don't get paid as well as they did 5 years ago.
i know you're fishing for responses, but i'll bite anyway...
i run XP at work on a crappy old P3. On a weekly basis I use outlook, word, excel, acrobat, VB6 IDE, VS.NET 2003 IDE, enterprise manager, query analyzer, firefox and IE (for testing web apps). I reboot my computer once every 3 or 4 months, and that's normally because i feel guilty about leaving the computer on if i'm going to be out of the office for 4 or 5 days.
at home i shut down every night because i don't want to hear the computer while i go to sleep and to save electricity. my home xp box boots in about 20 seconds, but insta-boot would be nice.
I stopped at the same point in the article. Best game ever? I didn't think it was as good as the original Halo. It certainly wasn't the best value. The game took me 5 hours to complete, which translates to $12/hr for the experience (not considering the fact that i sold the game for $40 on ebay:))
i agree. religion is a tool. all presidents are "religious" because that's the only way they'll be elected. JFK had enough trouble because he picked the wrong religion.
The difference between republicans and dems on the issue of religion is that republicans are willing to use religion to justify taking away people's rights (the abortion issue), are willing to destroy science curriculums in public schools (evolution and "intelligent design" issues), and they don't seem to understand the concept of seperation of church & state.
i have to admit that the biggest reason i visit/. is to read the MS bashing. i personally don't have anything against MS, but it's fun to read MS bashing comments.
that said, i'm really disappointed that this article was posted.
The original poster, however, should have specified earnings growth, then
any time you're talking about the PEG ratio, earnings growth is always the focus. That should be obvious, since the "E" in P/E and P/E/G stands for Earnings.
what leads me to believe that Google will grow 30% per annum? well, they grew 91% in the past quarter, and are expected to grow 71% in the coming quarter. 30% is a very conservative number.
FWIW, i no longer own google. I jumped off the train after a nice 80% gain:-)
As for games, I guess I got lucky -- the only game I ever really liked was Unreal Tournament, and there are excellent Linux versions available (original, 2003, 2004). Personally, I think the hardcore gamers should just use consoles; they're cheaper than computers, Just Work, use less power, and turn on instantly. Use your computer for work and your game system for gaming. That's what I would do
The ONLY game you like is UT? That's pretty sad. It's a fun game, but it would get really old if that were your only option.
Of the many problems with game consoles, the most serious one for me is the fact that the hardware is out of date within 6 months of release. Since most game consoles are designed for a 5 year life cycle, their value as an up to date gaming platform is very short lived.
That's not going to happen as long as Google keeps growing at its current pace.
The median projected growth rate for the next 5 years is 30%. P/E/G ratios of 2 are common for fast growing companies, so the lowest that P/E will get is about 60.
The P/E may be 80 for the trailing 12 months, but that's certainly not its current P/E.
Last time I checked, thin client setups still require a monitor! And a lot of the power used by today's high end systems are for the graphics card. a system designed for students would have much lower power requirements.

I agree completely. I can't recall a better example of the implicit endorsement of violence in our society, and the explicit condemnation of sex. I'm almost too upset to type right now...
1. With the next generation of consoles becoming nothing more than computers, what becomes the purpose of having two separate machines? Or perhaps the real point is, why use your computer for gaming?
two words: mouse, keyboard
Quake III made blasting your buddies the best thing since sliced bread. (Unreal Tournament wasn't bad either.)

Good point. I guess Gates got a decent return on his investment. Not that he would bother tracking such a small investment.

er, "Microsoft infected by virus". LOL
Hence the title: "Microsoft gets a virus".

How do you distinguish between those who don't know how to change their start page and those who choose MSN as their start page?

Very true. They've fixed their staff at ~25. They farmed off the Quake4 dev work to Raven so they wouldn't need to staff up for the project.

i take it that you belong to the subset of the educated minority who don't know how to use a spell checker.
