"Scientific folk" only see religion as a competitor when politicians use religion to shut down science (as George Bush did with stem cell research)
Hate to nitpick here, but with all the FUD going around... Bush didn't shutdown any stem cell research. Anybody and their brother can do all the stem cell research they want. They just won't get federal funding for it..... a far cry from being shut down.
The computer security can be laughable sometimes. Those of us who develop software, use Linux whenever possible. I NEVER boot my pc into windows except to allow the IT people to update my antivirus defs. You wouldn't believe the grief I get if I don't boot into windows at least once a week.
We don't respect mechanics because we, and our friends, have been lied to by mechanics so many times. Either about what needs to be repaired, what they broke while they were repairing something else, etc.
Yes, there are some shifty mechanics (as in all professions), but the majority are good honest workers. The biggest problem is the people who bring in their crap cars, and compain when something breaks that was completly unrelated to the work being done. ---> "Hey. I only wanted my tires rotated, and the engine threw a rod.... It's the mechanic's fault!!!"
People also think they know more than the expert, and try to tell the mechanic how to do their job.
Think about this one.... Doctors probably have it easier, since they only have one make and two models to work on. Not so for mechanics.:-)
It's nice that we're on our way to creating the materials needed for a space elevator, but where are we going to find a big enough rock to attach to the other end?
Now, it seems all these schools have produced are unemployed people with student loans and dubious certifications. --- Who spend all their free time posting on/.
Probably because most Linux users change their user agent string to report as a windoze variant...
That's what I do. I'm sick of so may internet sites denying me access because my browser doesn't identify as IE. Even though 99% would still work anyway. Now I just change the string, and have no more problems.
What do you do when the paint has become saturated? I suppose some care might need to be taken to dispose of it?
Well, you could start by RTFA. The titanium breaks down the gasses into nitric acid that is converted to harmless carbon dioxide, water and calcium nitrate by carbonate particles. These are then washed away by the rain. When the carbonate particles break down (five years in heavily polluted areas), the paint will keep converting the gas to nitric acid that still washes away.
I don't know what the obsession with Mars is either. It's so close to Earth anyway. I'd rather know what's out in the farther reaches of space. We don't know much about what's beyond our own solar system. Let's send some robots to the deepest reaches of space and see what's there.
Last time I checked, babies needed to learn how to crawl before learning how to run a 6-minute mile.
How about we take some baby steps first? Or....Lets wait the thousands of years it would take to get a probe to even the closest star, let alone "the deepest reaches of space". That would be a REAL waste of time.
When designers attack!!!!
Details at 11.
Most definately wind. Those are essentially small sand dunes. A small body of water doesn't have enough surface area to get wave formations like that.
Get your patch for OSX here
Why can't they just sue the company who's purchasing the ad, instead of suing Google?

Now he's gonna get sued by both Coolio AND Lucas.
We all know how well that works for MS Outlook.
They'll get to Mars by 2011??? HAH! :-)

Ok... Let's just call the planet Bob, and be done with it.
That's OK. I can write a patch that changes all system text to "Fa La La Lally" for them.
If we could just do the same to politician's mouths, we'd be all set.
... that they like to cancel great TV shows, just to make a few extra bucks on a movie they know people have been dying to see.
Maybe they meant to ban XFree69, but just made a typo.

Badgers? Badgers!?!?! We don't need no stinking Badgers!!!!

I'm a long time Linux user who now has a nice Dual G5 AND Linux boxes. Who's market share am I taking away from or contributing to now?

Maybe that explains the goatse guy.

Sounds like a great idea to me.
