I remember these bouts well, and while I was the target of some, generally speaking if you stand up for yourself each and every time they will find less prickly prey. I may have lost many, but I would always make sure the other guy knew he was in a fight.
Bullies don't like to get hurt, its only fun if they don't fight back.
That said there was always a pseudo code of honor (lol pardon the pun!) among everyone, from the kids directly involved, to those that inevitably come to watch, to the older kids who would occasionally look out for the younger ones. These days I expect it would be nastier and more fraught with danger.
I am sure this would come in handy for the coming apocalypse! I am sure there would be good articles in there. Some "how to" articles with diagrams sure would have been useful though...
Forget the actual quote, but it went something like: When observing technology of significant advancement, it can become to one that doesn't understand it as magic.
Now think about when people make fantasy movies. When something needs to makes sense, just say "Magic" and it fixes everything.
In science fiction they do the same. Because these are supposed to take place is time far far away, and the technology is advanced to such a level, it is really indiscipherable from that of magic, so the writers use it in the same way. Something doesn't make sense? Magic, or in this case red matter, or hydro spanners, or what have you.
The key to to have everything so far advanced that it doesn't really have to make sense, as really you assume your audience are comprised of primitives.
If your time line or technology is closer or more believable you also have to compensate by also tempering to what degree you use magic to fix things.
1) This is federation beginning. How many ships do you think they have out there? A handful. So yes they probably know a whole lot of sensitive information.
2) Aside for Shuttles, submarines are the closest thing we have to "spaceships". Many of these carry nukes, and the "Captains" of these would know the codes, and they also likely know the patrol routes of other subs. So in essence VS other subs with nukes, they information they contain would likely be very damaging. That said the US and the Federation would both likely realize this and take steps to ensure that there is a level of protection there, likely by compartmentalization of information any one Captain has. Need to know.
3) Who knows, from my memory Pike never talks, and its a dirty Romulen, maybe he just like torturing people. Also If he could waltz into Vulcan Space (who are supposed to be vastly superior to humans technology wise) and destroy them without effort, what the heck are the silly humans going to do about it.
4) The question you should be asking is if Nero's ships arrives like 28years before Spock's and Spock's was to try and save the Romulean homeworld, why didn't Nero just waltz over to Romulus and actually warn anyone? Perhaps even just save the wife and kid he keeps whining about... No he sits and waits for 30years so that he can get a vendetta on an event that at that time hasn't happened yet. So maybe Nero is just really stupid?
Maybe the banks realize that if they make their clients too hard to hack, then they themselves will become the target. This would force them to spend some big bucks on their own security which they are not wont to do. The current system allows them to blame customers. Not to mention banks are not the fastest adapter of technology, or the fact that they currently have other large issues to deal with.
The last case was 1962 and the one above 1958, both far too early for DNA testing. Unless you just mean that someone was found innocent after they were already put to death? Because even without a case that is always a possibility. There are plenty of examples of people convicted and then later exonerated, which is the main reason state executions are tricky. In the the Canadian case the Canadian Government went "Oops our bad, here is 6.5 million bucks!" 50 years after the event in 2008. Which is funny because I am not sure if that was big news up here as I don't remember hearing about it...
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Blizzard (Activision) announced that there would be no LAN plan included with Starcraft 2. They be sayin' it be because of them scurvy pirates, yarr! They be thinkin' of the children, yo ho ho!
One - Most games are not sophisticated enough to alter their actual play to match that of an actual player. Most just cheat by increasing stats (health, speed, number of, etc...) arbitrarily to make it more difficult. This bugs me a bit. It is the cheap easy stupid way to do it, so it is common. If someone can design a computer game that will alter its strategy or tactics in order to best me, that is the game I want to play. If it only gives itself 150% health, or 175% speed, or spawns 100 more extra guys, that is the computer just cheating against my superior intellect. Shame on you, I don't want o to play you any more.
Two - Having said that, most games cannot even handle simple friendly AI, let alone enemy AI. I just finished playing the solo campaign of World at War, and wow, my squad mates are dumb as bricks. I couldn't count the times where I would get "stuck" because some stupid squad mate decided to take cover right next to you, and you can even shoot the damn sumbitch as it won't let you. Only choice is to drop a grenade at your own feet, and hope you make it, or just commit yourself to the sweet embrace of death. If you don't have a grenade, you better hope someone can hit you standing up, or you are hitting the power button.
Generally speaking this is why people enjoy multiplayer games. Sure you get noobs out there (and everyone is at some point), however playing with people generally is more entertaining that the computer. Of course then again computers are rarely asshats that team kill, or act like complete morons, or scream obcenities and racist remarks for that matter.... Now there would be a real turning test, program an AI to be an asshole, and most players would probably be fooled... "That guy is too much of an asshole to be a bot!"
Hitler was named "Man of the Year" by Time magazine in 1938. We all know how that turned out.
I bet the editors at Time magazine a couple of years later were thinking "Gee guys, you think that award was a bit premature?":)...and yes I am comparing Obama to Hitler... I should win the biggest Troll award!
Well both have over 10 years of fictional cannon to build upon. They make up stuff consistently and use the same stuff in later episodes, or ever series. By simply repeating the use they give credibility to it. Hell I am surprised I can't find a hydrospanner at the hardware store now. It has also been explained away to death, and over time the inconsistencies filled in where possible.
Fringe has been around for 1 year. They are still making stuff up, it is all new.
You forgot about the 312% of Slashdot users who enjoy arguing about the meaning of unsubstantiated statistics that could prove or infer many things or nothing as they lack any significant details.
Rich people buy Macs! People switch to Mac and still have a PC kicking around! Mac are not compatible with anything so you need a backup PC! Due to business use Mac owners need a PC also! Because Rich people buy Macs they can afford to have more computers!
Terry Goodkind fans. (11 Books) Steven Erikson fans. (8 Large books) L. Ron Hubbard fans. (10 Books)
(Jordan had 11)
and not to be insensitive by Goodkind and Erikson are still alive and writing more in those series.
Also the later wheel of time books were really hurtin' near the end, I couldn't even force myself to read the last one (just to say I completed the damn thing) as I found it so bad and nauseating. Goodkind also suffers from this to a certain extent, but IMO not as bad. Erikson series in my view is still going very strong, though horribly complicated and convoluted. I am reading Toll the Hounds now, and its been awhile and I am having a hard time remembering who the hell everyone is and what their significance is.
Hubbard was Hubbard. Though I did like battlefield earth anyway.
Also as an alternate punchline:
2400 pages of a government document on how to prevent security leaks sounds more interesting than the wheel of time series anyway!
Yes, because the rest of the science fiction shows, such as Stargate and Star Trek really do science justice. How about Doctor Who, or Far Scape, X-files? Actually I would be hard pressed to find any to be quite honest. I challange you to name 3. So in that respect pretty much all science fiction would be called magic and fantasy to you.
Its a TV show, just enjoy it. Otherwise watch Bill Nye the Science guy or some serious documentary on science because you obviously do not enjoy the genre anyway.
By tough question it would be hard to only choose a few, knowing that you can only cover so much material. I read some when I was in high school, but it wasn't a dedicated science fiction fantasy class. We did 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Chrysalids, and Flower for Algernon I know I remember at least.
It somewhat matters what level of High School you are talking about, some books are more appropriate than others.
I would also suggest breaking the genre down into categories to get a broader experience. I would also avoid any of the non-serious "trash" science fiction and fantasy, while they may be fun and easy to read, they are not of great value (other than perhaps to get kids interested in reading in general). I would also stick to single books, not series for sake of time. Also pick shorter books, simply because you can cover more, and they may hold short attention spans better.
Some other classic books that would be on the short list: Dune (it really has to be). A wrinkle in time (more for younger audience). Left Hand of Darkness. War of the Worlds (really have to understand when it it was written to really grasp the depth of it). Snow Crash (I believe there may be a rape scene which may be a problem). Slaughterhouse V. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The Time Machine A Canticle for Leibowitz The Forever War. Something by Crichton (not including Timeline lol) Something by Asimov Something by Clark
There are plenty more. Many of the authors also have older shorter just as interesting books such as Frank Herbert. I didn't bother mentioning many of the other one already mentioned like Starship Troopers or Tolkin. Somewhat because they are obvious, and mentioned by many, but also because Tolkin, other than Hobbit which may be too young (maybe not), really is too long to cover and with the exception of Troopers I am not a huge fan of Heinlein.
Not sure what you definition of Fantasy is, however this is specifically a show about multiple parallel universes and rogue science gone amok. Many of the pieces of science are highly improbable which makes it interesting.
Fantasy to me involves, elves, dragons, knights, magic, etc... none of which are in Fringe. The only bit of fantasy might be Pacey having an IQ of 190.
I have recently gotten into the TV show Fringe. There is good science fiction out there if you look. It is hard to find and doesn't come around very often but it is out there.
Not all of it involves spaceships and wormholes. If you are looking for specifically for spaceships and wormholes you will fall into one of two categories (unless a third gets created), that of star trek, and that of star gate. If and when a new one is created everyone will complain that it is too much like the two prior universes dispite this being the reason why people want to watch it anyway.
Dollhouse is another that isn't bad that is new. There is of course the last season of LOST also.
I love a good space opera just as much as the next geek, but there is more out there than just that. Having said all that I think we are ripe for a new one, Trek is gone, Star gate is gone, Scrabblestar Metallica is gone, people fondly remember Firefly, I think we are ready for the next big thing. crosses fingers.
MS charges a fee to mail you a DVD to get a "free" upgrade from Vista32 to Vista64 if you bought it retail. There is a "processing" fee of like 12 or 13 bucks I think.
This is about par for the course it seems.
However if you are going to offer something as "free" you should at least allow for a free download. Hell make it a Torrent and they don't even have to cover all the bandwidth, however there are liability and security issues there. If given the download option, I don't see a big deal for having a processing fee for mailing a physical copy.
Behind the hockey rink after school! Fighting spot indeed. Makes me wonder if such still goes on there.
Ya now some jerk brings a gun.
I remember these bouts well, and while I was the target of some, generally speaking if you stand up for yourself each and every time they will find less prickly prey. I may have lost many, but I would always make sure the other guy knew he was in a fight.

Also writers are lazy. :)
I would have to disagree.

As does yours...
Actually not really.
Considering the network infrastructure and internet penetration of South Korea VS North America, it shouldn't matter in the least.
Sure applied over here, and our at best 5MB connections it may be problematic, but when 100MB is the norm it might be a bit more feasible.
Yes you seem very hopeful! :)
lol!
Ya, way to cheapen extortion! Whenever I hear about this stuff, I always think about these guys as mafia, selling "protection"...
"Hey momma mia, myself and my two esteemed compatriots here are part of the firm "Knuckles, Icepick, and Hammer", capiche?"
"Youse gotta pay us 5g's now, or we be coming back, and den we might not be so reasonable... mabbe den we take all you money..."
"So do the smart thing and just give us the money, OK?"
Demeans the integirty of judicial proceedings? What a joke.
From Canada, never heard of this case you mentioned, would be interested in more information on the case you are talking about.
This is all I can find: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_punishment_in_Canada#Reasons_for_banning_the_death_penalty

Bricks are useful. You can build a house, a fire place, they are strong, good insulators, etc...
A PS3 after crappy hardware destroying update is useless, except for giving toxins to some poor asshole in a 3rd world country to try an recycle it.
