When I was going to university in Ontario I had a funny converstaion with a bloke from England. I mentioned to him that I was going to drive home to my parents who live in Nova Scotia in the summer. When I told him that it was about 2000km he was astounded. I had done it several times in the past (it takes about 20 hours to do), so not a big deal. He said in comparison that he could probably drive to like Poland or Russia in that same distance, transversing several entire contries along the way. The really funny thing, is that in relation to the entire contry of Canada, going from Ontario to Nova Scotia is't even close to halfway across...
So I think if I ever lived anywhere in Europe I would find it a bit freaky that everything is so close together. Just a different perspective I guess...
Cheers!
just drink Green tea, and take Calcium. Or have Hot Green tea with Skim milk in it (I know your not supposed to, but its for the sake of the children, the fat children!). Or even better, have ice cold Green Tea, and maintain Calcium in your diet.
Better yet, eat less and better food fatty and move around every once in awhile. Its pretty simple, its not rocket science, its a lifestyle thing. Eat less food. Eat food that is good for you. Be active as you can. Thats my ultra secret formula, and it is patent pending so if any of you lose any weight, I will sue you.
Thats why I wear a tinfoil hat, keeps the parasites outta me head. Also prevents MRI machine from beaming "instruction" into my cortex.:P Seriously though, brain parasites just sound nasty (and are probably a real pain to get rid of I bet).
and they plan to enforce this how?

School Bans 'Tag'

banned "unsupervised contact sports"
Key word is unsupervised. So if they ain't watching whats to stop the kids from playing.
On another note I may be from Soviet Canuckistan, AND went to public school, but I could barely pick my own nose with out being "supervised" or watched. What kind of messed up schools to these kids go to that they are unsupervised? Unsupervised school? What do the kids do all just congragate once and day and teach each other?
Rather than make stupid unenforceable bans, hows about you watch the children? For the Sake of the Children for gods sake! Argh! [BOOF] head 'sploded...
Let me know when I can play a FPS in my hometown, online. Now that would be cool. It is something that I have thought for years would be the just great. You could hide out in your own house, or camp on your school roof, hell the home team would actually have an advantage! Anyway software developers your on notice! Build me this and I will buy it! Hmmm of course the Jack Thompson (or whatever his name is) would have a field day about a FPS in a actual real school (even though virtural) online....
As to my last comment I was just kidding (not about the Shannara Series) but rather about you sucking, as detailed by my emoticon:p.... Anywho on further reflection, I should revise my comment about the Sharana "Series". I only meant the first 3 (as in usally the case) and not all the other ones since. Much like my last arguement I lump those into the "fun" books of lesser quality that exist in the same story line/Universe.
Yeah yeah yeah, Zalazny is great. Though I didn't think much of him, perhaps I will have to revisit him and see if I missed something. (Don't get me wrong, I am not saying he is bad, just didn't think he was as good as everyone seems to say he is).
If you want to talk about shite, try reading Robert Jordon... I am on like book 9 or 10 (or whatever), and it is awful, and has been awful for several books now.... However I am so pot commeted at this point, I feel I have to keep reading otherwise I have been wasting my time for all the previous books. Its one of those cyclic paradoxes, that is probably the only reason he sells books anymore.
The only reason I asked if you read Brian Herbert's stuff is that I have met too many people who pass judgement on books they have not read, which of couse is somewhat silly. If you have read his stuff and can't stand it, thats fair enough.
Yeah I also get the cheap seats in the airport as well (I fly at least once a year every year home to the folks), and usually end up buying some garbage in the airport. For a while there I bought Tom Clancy's books like that (I know, Gasp!), horrible I know as that is. That was untill I figured out that everyone of his books are pretty much the exact same thing each time (with a few exceptions).
Ok as someone who has read all the above and in most cases all of their works, I agree and dissagree with you.
First of all what really got my attention is that you labeled Donaldson in a derogatory way about being a "Modern... Writer". Yet you assoicate Zelazny with the rest.
The first book in the Amnber series which Zelazny is most known for was written in 1970. The first book in the Thomas Covenent Cronicles was published in 1977. Zelazny's series went into the late 1990's while Donaldson's went into the mid 1980's (Though a new one just came out in 2004).
So you are saying that Zelazny is a "classic writer" and Donaldson is a "modern witer". Well I think that is a croc as is your description of the definition between the two. If ANYTHING the older works had more singular purpose than the more modern stuff, that is why I like it. The older stuff usually take a single simple principle, a "what if", sort of postulation and then construct a book around it. The newer stuff is more about story telling and relationships.
Finally that out of the way, on to the next.
I would agree (and probably most would) that Brian Herbet's material isn't as good (or as strong) as is fathers. However I think it is a bit much to say they are ruining their Father's work. I would argue that it would take much more than that to ruin something like that in any event.
I view people (and sons) who write in this fashion as just continuing a story in the same universe. Much like (and I know most are garbage) the Star Wars, Forgotten Relms, Dragonlance, etc of the world. In every single case you will have a single author that will stick out, and the rest of the books are just written by nobodies expanding the universe. You have Timmothy Zhan for Star Wars, RA Salvador (some might argue for Greenwood or someone) for Forgotten Relms, and Margret Wise and Tracy Hickman for Dragonlance. Some are better than others. In any event the books that followed didn't ruin anything, mearly expanded the story for those that were interested in reading it. Some do and others don't. So Brian Herbert isn't trying to emulate his father (other tha n writing by profession), or pretend to be his father, he is just writing additional story for the orginal universe that his father created. Yes I have read them all, and you that have passed judgement, have you?
In fact I find what is being done to Tolkien's work more insidious than the examples you stated. Brian is writing his own work using his own name (he leaves it up to you to decide if he is worth reading). Chris is releasing material that was never released, and probably was never supposed to be released, I am sure Tolkin had his reasons for not publishing that stuff in the first place. Also he is taking his fathers work and piecing it together with his own stuff.... And using his fathers name to publish, even though in small print it will have Christopher and compolation, etc... we all know the marketing tricks publishers use to sell their fare.
IN conclusion, the Shanara series was great, and you suck.:P
Its free for the first 6 months then they charge you 29$..... Last I checked both Bell and Rogers both have a 3 Months "Free" then bend you over a fence policy also. My definition of "Free" must be different than other peoples. I thought it meant something you didn't have to pay for, ever. Really because as soon as that "ever" kicks in, it ain't really free anymore, is it?
Anyway still pretty cool though, good for Hydro and TO. Wee!
Again it comes to how well you treat your employees.
For the first one, so long as you arn't a jerk about it, and it isn't something trival, most will welcome the warning as opposed to an out right fireing, as it gives them a second or third chance not to lose their great job due to a lapse in judgement or whatever.
For the second, having good benifts is also part of the good employee package. I know where I work and live, you can get 6 Months of maternity leave, and it isn't something you ask for, you either take it or you don't. The employer is obligated by law for this. Generally your manager should be slapping you on the back and telling you to enjoy yourself. Again its all about empolyee relations to generate loyality. Same goes for a good health and insurance package... if the employee knows if they lose their job they lose all those as well, and their family will as well, etc... anyway you get the idea.
Now if you really want to make an arguement, go way outside the norm, and ask the question: What if it isn't about being a disgruntled employee or greedy. What if someone threatened an employees family with violence unless he cooperated. Now thats a moral pickle. Its all illegal, whos to say with millions/billions are involved that it also doesn't include violence or intimadation... I would guess if that were to happen the gloves would be off, I think any reasonable person is going to take their family's regard over that of their employer, no matter how great they are. Some food for thought.
OK I think we are talking about two things here. One, which I stated is about how to prevent your employees from betraying you. In which my agruement holds.
People who "join" for the sole intent on stealing your secrets are called spys. They would not be part of your orginal employee pool. However, this could be reduced by back ground checks, and limiting access to sensitive projects for a period of time. What other recourse would you have? Double Agents and 007's?
I don't see what you second statment has to do with anything. If you are talking about employees you fired for legit reasons having an axe to grind, well generally companies don't give them a chance. As soon as they are fired they are taken to the door by security. In fact I have had several friends who quit, and gave 2 weeks notice (because they found better employment, and were still in good standing with their company), only to be told to leave immediantly and that they would pay you for the 2 weeks not to come to work... pretty sweet if you ask me.
As far as whatever skills and info they got stored in their heads? Well your SOL and should be a better judge of people next time or have done something to keep them, or whatever. There are many legal things you can do as well.... NDA etc.... It would also be pretty favorable to prove in court if Company A has Technology X and Fires Employee I, then Company B Hires Employee I and suddenly had Technology X that they stole said technology.
Seems pretty simple to me. Pay your employees well and be a good employer.... It will be much more difficult to find an employee if you inspire loyality. At the very least the employee will not want to loose a good thing and not risk it. Pay your employees squat, and treat them like garbage, well you get what you deserve.
Fin.
well I'm Canadain, so maybe I have this wrong, but it was my understanding that the USA greatest nuklear defence is the fact that there is a great big ass ocean between them and any of their enemies. That was what go them so pissed about the whole cuba being commies sort of thing, gave them first strike capability. As to most of the "threats" out there such as N. Korea, Iraq, Iran, and whatever middle east contry it is this week, unless they load their nukes on a bus, and take a ferry to the US, it just ain't gonna happen. They might have nukes, but as yet no way to deliver them that sort of distance. Look at the N. Korean missle test the did several weeks ago. Big failure. Though I hear they are calling a huge victory/success in the governmnet run publications of that country.
I don't think "buxom" is the fisrt word that comes to mind when describing Samantha Carter... More like soccer mom, but without the kids, or minivan, or soccer. Basically all the good and none of the bad.
OK, maybe its just me, or perhaps I am just being silly, but "Core" implies singularity. So having 4 cores, is kinda meaningless, let alone 8. Does the Earth have more than one core? an apple? anything? I can't wait til the techospeak gets to the point were people start talking about sub-cores or something like that. It will be called X3 Cored Squared or someting, where you have 4 cores, each of which is powered by 4 sub-cores, each of which has 4 micro-cores, giving you 64 processors! So what is a core? I think a core that contains the ability to process 4 processes independantly in parallel, is simple that, the core, not 4, not 8, etc... Sheesh make up a new name.... This is computer science people, at least come up with a stupid anacronym or something.
What kind of "intelligent" mine would want to blow itself up in the first place... Particulary if they are mobile. I know if I was an intelligent mine and some bastard stepped on me, I would be like "nuts to that, I'm otta here" and hit the road... I would also invite other intelligent mines to come with me, we could travel the world!
I disagree. I also play most my games online. However unless you just want that "oh it's new and I wanna try it out and see if the hype is right" many older games are the way to go. My two favorite examples are: Enemy Territory and Starcraft... If a game is good, players will play online for years. If it sucks, (good) online play will last maybe a year until the hype engine runs dry. Thus if you pick up an older good game, it really is a good game (you can probably stick Halo2 in that pile as well), however if you buy a new game, ye takes yur chances. I would agree about Counterstrike and Quake, those are REALLY old, but you only have to go back a couple of years to get discounts and good games.
Now with Rogers High-Speed Internet you get the follow features!
3 Months at a "special" introductory price!
Free Installition
Faster speeds than dial up, and Bell DSL
and now with 50% less spying!
.
.
On a personal note they also don't constantly call you trying to sign you up for garbage and rip-off deals.
My hate knows no bounds for Bell. I finally got fed up with them and canceled my landline. These days with a bit of ingenuity you don't have to promote the old monopolies that really don't give a shit about you as a customer because they don't have to.
Various Cell companies and Cable companins can fullfil the same role now (though many cable companies are only marginally better).
1) Microsoft still sells XP. Until they stop selling it, there SHOULD be an expectation that they will support it. Even after they stop selling it, it SHOULD be expected that they would support it for a year or two, so they are not just leaving those that bought it high and dry.
2) When the heck is Vista supposed to come out? If I am building a new computer, do I want to be one of the losers that buys the last unsupported copy of XP, then have to buy Vista. That sucks (and is currently the situation I am in). So this also kinda invalidates your Linux example, as in Linux you can just upgrade your OS to the most current version, and then install the video drivers. I think it goes without saying that this will NOT be possible with Vista. You will have to BUY a completely new OS, and leave the old behind.
I had some good years of gaming growing up, C64, Nintendo, 286 kind of fun. Lots of good games there. I however had my best years of gameing when I went to university, 1995 to 2000.
Lets start at the begining: The old games first, and many introductions to games due to sharing... Two oldies that come to mind are XCOM (maybe it was XCOM 2), and Civ. Two other brutal games my first year were the orginal Warcraft and Doom2. I played with a 2400 baud modem and a 486 back then I think. Good times.
Then came second year, not sure how I passed with all the good games... First off the two worst offenders, who could have flunked me out of University had I not been so smart. Warcraft 2 and Duke Nukem 3D. You don't even want to know how much time I spent playing these games heads up agains't others. Quite possibly the some of the best games ever. Quake also gets hornoable mention... though we could never get the multiplayer (still using modems) to function without lag. Another game that comes to mind was Zork: Nemisses (I think that is was it was called). Anyway I acutally had a friend hide it for me so I would stop playing (it was exam time and I couldn't stop)... I am pretty sure we found it anyway and beat it over exam time.... Definatly my lowest grades this year.... Warcraft 2 and Duke Nukem 3D were killer!
Third year wasn't much better scolastically (notice my shitty spelling?), as it was another great year for games! This was Blizzards year I think when they came out with Starcraft (ouch, no school work getting done now), and Diablio.
Anyway my university was pretty much a haze of video games and drinking, so trying to piece this together cronologically is becoming too hard. Some other games that were discovered and played to death are as follows:
Masters of Orion 2: ok I know its an older game, but I didn't play it till later... Damn was it a good time waster. It was one of thoes games like Civ where you sit down to play at 1pm and when you look up it is 4am.... dangerous to the extreem!
Return to Castle Wolfenstien: This was another game I played to death. Another one of my favorites of all time, played this one online all day all the time, was particulary brutal when I set up two computers running it side by side... soooo much fun!
Enemy Territory: A spin off from Wolfenstien that was again quite possible the best game ever. I played this as much as any game I have ever played before all online.... The fact that it was FREE also blew (and continues to blow) my mind. The best team based shooters of all time imho.
FF7: it also come out during that period. Damn it was good. The one and ONLY time I rented a PS2. I will admit, the ps2 rental came back a "bit" late. It was also probably the worst case of marathon gaming I have ever done. As A) I had to take rental back, B) if I turned off console I would loose progress, and C ) it was just so damn good. I think I played for about 36 hours stright without sleep before I finnly game up and passed out.
Battlenet also was developed at this point... good stuff there.... also diableo and #2.... hack and slash fun. I think the funnest part of those games where picking up a Brittle Sword of uslessness -10 to all abilities kind of thing...
Anyway long story short some amazing games came out in that 5 year span between 1995 and 2000. To this day I am surprised I didn't do worse than I did at school as a result.
IN summary: Warcraft2, Duke Nukem 3d, ET, and FF7 = best games ever.

Free Installition Faster speeds than dial up, and Bell DSL and now with 50% less spying! .
I for one welcome our telco spying overlords...

Just two quick points....
Anyway my 2 cents.

Don't those fuel cells create water as a byproduct?
So instead of being the center of attenion, and having you pants on fire,
with everyone concerned for your wellfare (not to mention possible lawsuit)
it will simply look like you wet yourself. Better make sure you are only
looking at office friendly material... having to explain that you didn't
pee yourself is bad enough...
