  1. Computers are pretty much idiot proof now... on Too Many Computers Hurt Learning · · Score: 1

My only comment is, I had many computers growning up (not all at once).I started on a TRS80 (if you can even call that a computer), a VIC20 and what I consider my first real computer which was a 286 clone. The thing back then is that compaired to today, computers really didn't work all that well. What I mean by this is that you could not take things for granted and everything was not automatic. More often than not you had to do a lot of friging around to get things to work. It could be that you had to alter Modem connect strings, maybe play with XMS/EMS memory, DOS batch files, etc... and that was just to get Kings Quest working! All I am saying with the older computers that probably most of us grew up with, it took a fair bit of learning just to use the damn things. In order to do the things we wanted to do (for me it was mostlt playing PC games and connecting to BBS's), you had to leard stuff to do it. Today computers come in a box and are easy to use as a console. They could be used as overpowered xboxs which while fun, isn't so educational. Anyway thats my 2 cents.

I think it is funny that this talk automatically moved (no i didn't read the article you insensitive clod!) to nanobots and self-repairing systems! Why wouldn't it be cheaper/easier (is today in compu hardware anyway, ever see someone 'fix' a computer... they take old modular bits and replace them with new modular bits), do to have heavily redundant systems... So throw away that hydrospanner, just activate seconday, or tieriary systems, or 4th etc... use advanced minituration to stuff as many redundant systems as you can in a given application... that way when say your "astrocraft" is like 8 billion km away you are not worried about complex decision making nano bots repairing damaged components... something no work, /autoflipswitch/, bingo new system online... rinse and repeat. Dunno seems simple to me...

  13. XBOX vs PC??? on Halo 2 Reviews · · Score: 1

OK, I have to point this out that there are an awful lot of people flaming about how halo multiplayer sucks, how the game sucks, and how only PC's and PC gamers rule.. or something to that effect.

First let me tell you that I (was) an AVID PC online gamer. Second the basic premis of this post is that: XBOX IS NOT A PC. That said why are people comparing them? My favorite online shooter of all time would have to be Wolfenstien: ET, but I go way back to Doom, Nukem, Quake et al. The reason why I play more xbox than PC these days is very simple. My last computer I bought was 3000$. Within 3 years it was essientally useless as a gaming platform. My xbox cost me 300$. These days you can buy an xbox, several games, an extra controller, the DVD thingy and it would still cost less than the video card that would go into a PC. That said the shear fact that people are comparing the two says to me that it must be damn good. I would say that I did enjoy PC online gaming better, however as a subsitute xbox isn't bad for what it is. If this game (HALO 2!) is even half as good as some of these reviews say I am sure I will enjoy it. The one thing that I am also impressed with is the 4 player and 4 tag support on xbox live... Too many games need that and don't have it.. The one concern I have is the game length which does seem short... however if the multiplayer is really good it matters not. The orginal wolfenstein I rememeber for the PC, once I beat it, and tried the multiplayer I never ever played the single player again.

Another point of concern about posts here is the topic is the new game halo 2... 2! not the first halo.

    Anyway thats my rant...

First off be known that I am Canadian (so take this however you will). That said there is one 'fact' I would like to debate. The jobs (that I know of) that come north to Canada, are NOT $40k/year jobs either. As far as I can tell from personal experiance there are two types. The Dreaded Telemarketer, and the Useless Technical Suppport. Thats it. It is not the higher paying jobs. These jobs rarly pay more that 10$/hour... and thats in Canadian dollars. So roughly 7.50$US an hour. So basically people with few skill sets take these jobs (and students to get some spending cash). Anyway thats all I wanted to say. I have NEVER seen any other job other than that type come here. If anything, it seems more American Corporations are consolidating their holdings and closing branches up here and moving south once more. Anyway my 2 cents.

I don't know... They could have a lot of fun with this movie... If they make it a kind of Action/Comedy/Parody it might actually be worth seeing. What it will probably will be is a sub-par action film with lots of CGI and effects... But they could have a lot of fun.. like the whole flash light thing... they could have the Rock going down some dark hallway, freaking out due to monsters, frantically switching back and forth between flashlight and shotgun... then finally saying something glib like 'screw this' and duct taping the two together... I would laugh, everyone knows that bit... Or little things like Ads for NVIDIA and ATI, maybe taking shots at the vid card cheating industry... or like making the detonation code for a big bomb at the end being 'idkfa' or someting like that... The Rock can be a funny guy when he wants to, he had that one good movie. So in closing I don't think the movie is 'doomed' (sorry had to) to failure, that is just the most likely result. However if they get away from the game plot (such that it is), and embellish with some witty humor, it might be ok. Anyway just my two cents...
