I am rarely serious on here but here it goes: Just two things.
1) Just recently, I think it was in Canada (not 100%), where a man informed his friends, family and police that he was going to commit suicide. This was partially a protest or way of promoting euthenseia (spelling whatever). Anyway what it came down to is that he had terminal cancer. Was going to die anyway. For sure. Very painfully. He decided to kill himself as he still had the option to. If he let himself decline due to cancer he would be fucked as at somepoint he would no longer be able to do it on his own, and (at least in this country, probably most) it would be illegel for his doctor to help him in this way. From what I read his friends/family were not thrilled with the decision, but understood, and respected that decision.
2) That said I read most of the big posts, and everyone seems to be arguing if depressed if suicide should be promoted (or help available out there to who wants it)... I think that is silly. What if you were dying from a terminal illness? That is extreemly painfull, and takes its sweet time. (Not to get into the whole euthenasia discussion) Assuming it is illegal for a doctor or someone to help you commit suicide, I think I would like to see what options would be available to me. Granted this is a very last resort and not to be taken lightly.
I think this comes down to two principles: one is the fact that death is so final. Like capital punishment mistakes can be made, and there is no recourse. The other is the fact of coupibility (again with the spelling). Basically if someone is depressed or mentaly not there, are they capable of making these decisions for themselves. While someone could also make a very logical valid arguement to end ones life due to pain and suffering. You could also argue that someone under that kind of duress is unable to think in clear and concise terms.
Anyway it is really silly to make suicide illegal that is just dumb (it may be the case in Canada as well I am not sure). I also think that censoring informaion on how to do it painlessly or quickly or whatever is also silly. I can understand that you do not want to promote it or make it an easy choice for someone, but there is still a vaild use or need for it out there. I think the smartest thing to do would be to consult with your doctor, but because of various laws and perhaps ethics, doctors may feel obligated to prevent you, inform authorities, etc.. so who knows.
Anyway it goes beyond saying that it is a more complex problem than saying suicide is bad and information about it should be banned.
Of course after all this I didn't RTFA so it may be saying that information like that should only be controlled by certain groups like doctors and such....
I would just like to think that if I was in a situation of terminal painful death suffering, with basically no life before the end anyway. That I might be able to find help to end it mercifully would be nice. My body my choice kind of thing... pro-choice I guess. Mind you I think evaluation and discussion would be needed with doctor, friends/family etc...
What a horrible discussion topic eh? Needed, but horrible just the same.
And yes ok maybe I lied about there being just 2 things...
Ok I didn't RTFA, but it sounds the exact same. I am getting a bit jaded with all these "Anouncements", which I am learning are nothing more than advertisments, PR, and bs.
This seems to follow the video card buisness model where you make a paper card and you never see it.
Much like like the vaunted PS3 and the CELL processor... Can I buy one? No. I will believe it when I see it otherwise its all so much marketing bullshit.
No doubt whatever company released this information wants to go public or the researchers are trying to get money or whatever.
Nano mumbo jumbo paint saves the world! Weee!
When someone acutally produces it, and someone acutally buys it, and someone else actually applies it and see how it functions in the real world, then I will get excited.
Go to www.distrowatch.com or maybe its.org not sure...
Anyway it has every linux distrabution you can think of and about 400 more.
I am a linux noobie and I just installed it on my old DELL Dimension 4100 (PIII-800 256mb ram, POS).
I had some problem geting the live-cd (boot cd) working but by using a combonation of a "Smart Bootmanager" (I think it was called) and updating my BIOS, I got it to go.
I am very impressed thus far, even though I am still figuring things out.
Seems to run fine though, includes all the basics for computer use. Easy to install and use.
One thought I had though it may be too intensive for young pups, but Gentoo distrobution is a source based version that has apparently a very extensive install procedure if you want it to, and you can learn the linux OS from the bottom up, what better way to learn than to make the little buggers do the install for you.:)
Just a couple of things. I used to run an SMP system before I fried it. yes dual core is supposed to be very much like SMP (symetrical Multi-Processing, I think is what it means).
One its is on the same chip. That means shared cache memory with I would think would be much faster than having to pass operations across busses and the like.
Two, you are correct in that running an SMP (and likely a dual-core) will have very little effect on gaming or single applications... 4-6% probably in most cases. However this is NOT its primary purpose as far as I am concerned. It is about sharing proccesing power. So if I wanna rip a DVD, play and mp3, surf the net, play a game, all the while processing vertor equations in the back ground it will help me do that. It will allow to multi-task much more effectly. My crappy SMP system I built could do more things at the same time than my newer faster DELL
Three, to my knowlege having 64bit rather than 32bit architechure in current present day applications is pretty much for all intents and purposes useless. Should be go back to the single core 32bit, 1ghz processor? No.
All it will take is someone to create some killer app using all these technologies that will blow current practices out of the water (dual-core, 64bit). They will make a bazillion dollars (probably MS), and then everyone else will jump on the band wagon and harold in a new generation of computing. However it seems to me that the software is where the bottleneck seems to be, it has to catch up with the hardware. Both sides must be profitable, they both have their models, this is how it works. Hardware will always come first it is the nature of the beast. Hell AMD may be looking at the server or serious workstation market (currently dominated by Intel probably), and want a piece. These are usually much more expensive anyway. Once the process it down pat it will be cheaper, or whatever they think the market will bear.
In the short term, dual-core is just a meaningless at 64bit, for the mainstream user or gamer. There is a neish for it, but really it is the developement process is what is important here.
I tip my hat and raise my glass to you good sir, as you are 100% correct.
CONSUMERS are tired of getting dicked around and are taking advantage of technology to their benefit, go figure. When company's start producing quality products at that are good value, then piracy (at least in developed contries) will not be a mainstream problem (which for all intents and purposes means zero problem). The problem is that these asshat profit driven companies (blame demanding shareholders whatever...), will try and make as much money as they can. Don't give me bullshit about costs and expenses, a DVD with case probably costs about a 1$ to produce, and they sell for 30$. Why? Because of costs, production, distrubution, etc... I say bullshit. It is because some marketing guy some where figured out that is the statistical most some smuck (the most the market will bear) will pay. Ads at the front of movies, again some marketing shmuck figured out most people will put up with it and they can make even MORE money. Not being about to fastforward though the Ads, mean more effective Ads, which means they can chage more for the space, which of course equals more money. They will learn that they consumer base will only put up with so much shit before they turn to other sources. They will also find that it is hard to attract people back. Anyway that is my rant. Yar!
This is exactly the situation I am in right now. Choice is good however. I did something much like the author, in that I made 4 different LiveCD's. I just went to LinuxQuestions.org and DestroWatch.com and picked what seemed to me the top destro's in each category (so far I have Gentoo, Knoppix, XANDROS, and MEPIS). From what I have read I will probably want to try KNOPPIX or MEPIS (this article seems to like MEPIS more than others) first, then perhaps GENTOO if I ever get that advanced.
So far none of the LiveCD's have worked (I blame my crappy old Dell), but I hear (haven't tried yet) I can make a boot floppy to bypass my old crappy DELL BIOS, and boot the CDROM from the floppy BIOS (unless someone is pulling my chain). I would then see what each is like on the LiveCD (Although I think Gentoo has to be installed, and from what I hear it is a big process). I would probably start with a easier or more basic favor anyway. It can be confusing though, as there are a TON of different distro's out there (which I didn't really realise until I started looking into it). It does help however when people make articles like the one above or forums like this one as well. Anyway thats how I see it from my perspective. Besides the more research I do, the more knowlegable I become, and am able to make a more informed decision.
Thanks, I will give that a try. Orginally I had though it may just be my CDROM, as it has trouble booting from it regardless (XP will not either). I had read in the documentation that you could make boot floppies from the CD itself and then boot via floppy, however if my BIOS is not compatible or whatever, then it won't work regardless I figure. Its a crappy 3 year old mid range DELL so its not too surprising.
Ok your calling me a moron? I am an idiot to let IE get taken over? It is my responsibility to defend IE? Give me a break... Yes I know I can disable features so that it can't happen. However I am not about to cripple myself so that I can browse. What I was saying is that it should be made so these things cannot happen.
Number 2 I was trying to be brief and as you may have noticed it was still too long a post. I have various Spyware and adware program running, and well as firewall software, etc.. AND anti-virus software. I figured any intelligent reader would get the idea that I was trying to fix my system which was the post, not a line by line outline of how I tried doing it and specifically what software I used you flipping moron. Also feel free to tell me how I can back up 260GB of data please. Can I do that to CD or please, give me a break. You have to risk manage. Am I going to buy another computer so I can have duplicate systems? No! Be reasonable. Have more disks to be infected on the same computer? Tape drive?? Yeah I got that money to spend too...
Number 3 actually the version I am using is "install-x86-universal-2004.3-r1" which to my limited knowlege (admittedly) IS the lastest you can get. It is my LIMITED understaning that you can download updates via the Portage feature. However you moron it is a bit hard to do if you do not have a running copy. Anyone feel free to correct me on any of this, as I ONLY have a limited understanding.
Number 4 Yes you get one point, my computer is a POS... if I had a choice I would love to get a new one, but $$$ dictates otherwise. What I wanted was perhaps some help like perhaps flashing to a new BIOS may help, or trying a friends newer DVD drive. You being a jerk and mouthing off doen't help me at all.
So your saying LINUX isn't for me nor is Windows? Hmm well I seem left with very little alternative... What FreeBSD? I am not sure why you decided to be such a jerk but whatever, if it makes you feel superior, then have fun, I certainly can't stop you.
I could try and say how many years I have working with computers and various OS's, or pehaps how I work in the industry on an enterprise level, or how many degrees I have in the field... but we all know two things, that I can say whatever and you won't belive it and vice versa and that you are a certainly a jerk.
As we all know, SPAM exists because it makes money. Therefore it is not a big leap to say that if you eliminate the profits then you eliminate SPAM. Another fact is the the only reason people buy products advertized with SPAM is they are either a) idiots or b)old people (no offence, I am sure there are many old slashdotters here that are quite informed, but on the whole...come on). Anywho, you start off by fighting SPAM with SPAM. No I do not mean something childish like SPAMMING the SPAMMERS, what would that accomplish? No what I refer to is you set up a great deal (doesn't matter what. Its fake anyway), and SPAM away. Then you just wait for all the orders to come in. After you have been saturated with orders, you then take that address list you just built (which contains the addresses of all the idiots and old people), and you prodeed to hire our 'contracts' to 'deal with' the problem. This will solve the SPAM problem once and for all, or your money back!
Just in case you have no sense of humor, this is a joke... DarthVain
This would be slightly funny if not for the fact that I HAVE to read this at work, as my home computer (which is outside of a well defended government network) is a wriggling mass of Trojans/Worms/viruses/spyware/adware... I am running 10 or 12 different anti-virus software in a futile attempt to clean it up. It is screwed. I have a feeling I will have to FORMAT and lose all my data (20GB + 120GB + 60GBx2).
All I have to say is "Trojan Downloader" sucks some ass big time, it can really ruin your day. If you see anything popup about a "INF installer" while you are surfing with IE (which I will NEVER EVER do again, well at work maybe), pull the plug. Press the off switch. cut the line.
I have disinfected most of the baddies, but more always seem to come up... The best part is the more I "disinfect" and basically delete files, inevedibly critical system files get chewed... so now XP is wildly unstable as well, not to mention my internet connection is also severered (which may be a blessing in discise).
So right now I have a process called svchost.exe runing my CPU at 99% and at least one bit of adware hidden away somewhere I cannot fathom. The one good side to this coin (not for me), is that I am seriously considering an OS move, I am so mad. I have downloaded the latest versions of KNOPPIX 3.7, GENTOO 4.3, XANDROS 201, and Simply MEPIS 4.4 but probably due to my CD-ROM sucking none will live boot except XANDROS, and it requires an HD install to run. I am still trying to save my data, but i am getting more discuraged by the minute. Anyway thats my lame story as sucky as it is.
BTW I know it is off topic but could any of you LINUX people out there tell me wtf isolinux errors mean on live boot attempt? Specifically the one that says something about a very dammaged bios or something like that and "Trying to wing it" and then repeat. Sucks. Anyway my response to BILL would be I just finished TRYING to get rid of HUNDREDS (if not thousands) of malware files off my computer because XP is SOOOO secure. I think he needs to windows update his reality.
DarthVain
I am sure by the time it is released (in 2010), we will all be using quantom computers, or 12 Ghz Intel Althlon's with intergrated dual GeForce Ultra Extream happy fun time 9900 SLI PRO Limited Ed. intergated or some other such foolishness so it won't matter.
Hey Idiot! While your at it ban TV. Might as well ban movies too. Perhaps books, the radio should be banned as well. Have we banned the internet yet? no. Ban it too. Idiots. Why do you leave the rest of the world alone and go live in a damn cave with your fingers pluging your ears and read a bible.... idiots... Sure you have to have some regulations and whatnot but give me a freaking break.
Mental note: 1)Move servers to hosts somewhere like Cambodia. 2)Give MPAA or whoever the finger.
I always think this is funny... It must be Bit Torrent that is making all these bootleg copies! Never mind, I could just rent the damn thing for 3$ (6$ if blockluster), rip it myself. I could also do the same and tape it VHS syle...ohhhh. If i was really cheap I could just 'barrow' from a friend, do the same. I could also copy it off TV.. I could tape it to VHS, or pipe right into computer... could edit out all the stupid commercials that way as well. Hmmmm, of course thats a lot of work right... Guess I will just order it from over seas where they have a bajillion bootleg copies of everything for a 1$ (sure it might cost 10$ shipping but thats still like what 20$ less than the exorbant price they are asking for most). I digress though, it must be bit torrents fault as they made electronic standards.... might as well sue webpages that host those as well... and all their links... as they are the cause of all my illlllllssss!:) As I said some funny stuff. How about this for a buisness model. STOP TRYING YOU BEST TO RAPE YOUR CUSTOMERS AND MAKE A 7000% PROFIT! I bet if they just sold them a bit cheaper, people would buy more... I don't want a 40$ DVD thanks.
I hope the above is modded funny. I did COBOL programming when I was back in school. "Easy English-Like syntax" and changing buisness users into programmers, does not fit the description I remember. I remember Assembly lanuage was more of a bitch to write in, but for an advanced generation lanuage it sucked. I still remember the prof. deducted points off my final COBOL project becuase he 'didn't like' recursive programing, jerk.
The main reason I think that passwords have a security risk (other than personal ones your don't really care that much about anyway), in the corporate world is stupid low level IT people (Network Help/Admin or High level + managers depending on how decisions get made). Take this example (where I got very pissed off):
First some people in IT get this crazy idea... Our login names fit the pretty much standard firstletter.lastname (which it has been ever since I can remember, all my accounts, we are talking a large number here, that i didn't pick my own user name it always had that format... anyway) format. Anyway in their great univeral wisdom, they decided it would be better if they changed all the login standards to lastname.first_two_letters_of_firstname. So a Bob Lambert formerly BLAMBERT, is now LAMBERTBO. Now do this to a couple thousand employee's most of which are not Tech savvy to begin with... that is the start of our troubles.
Next a month later reset the standards for passwords (as if people are not confused enough trying to login). It was a simple password standard, must be at least 6 (maybe 8 not sure) chara long, and must change password every 30 days. Most people usually had two or three and simply rotated them every 30 days... no big deal. The new standard? How does this sound? Must be 12 Char long. Must have both upper and lower case letters. Must have a number. Must have a special chara (!@#$%^&*, etc...). Must not have a previous password in it (history of 12), and must change every 30 days. (Which means that you can use one of the same passwords in about a year) Does this seem even remotly reasonable to anyway? Am I just ranting for no reason? I can't wait to forget my password and have some IT Help Winnie look up my password to find "DumbestPassWordEver#1".
Personally I think they did it for job security. Can you even imagine how many passwords get forgotten and people have to call IT for their Username and password.
I also wonder if these IT idiots ever had a meeting about this. Did no one speak up and say, 'hey this may not be a good idea' or 'gee this might be counter productive to security as EVERYONE is gonna write it on a sticky note and put it on their computer!'.... Not mention the IT phones ringing off the hook and perhaps it happening so often that they become complacent to the point where they wil give usernames and passwords to any smuck to calls....
I am no network security specialist, but even I can see that simply making more complex passwords does not necessarily make you more secure.
Canadian here. Just a note about those Sea Kings... not really the same thing. Its not that they are technologically complex that takes 30 hours maintaince, its the fact that each one is about a billion years old (give or take a million years), and are just falling apart.
Peace,
DarthVain
no mod points either, but I did nearly pee myself and give myself away (reading /.) to the rest of the office peons laughing at that comment!

Anger increasing....

I for one welcome our human-brain mouse overlords!
pfft Dorset! Just think how big Canada will be with the ice and snow are gone up north. I can't wait for my 50km back yard...
1)Advertise on /.
2)???
3)Profit
Come on i can't belive i am the first one to do this on this thread!
Xboxen anyone? With the communicator? come on! 'This is Red Leader, Gold leader take out those towers!' I got shivers...
Mental note:
:) As I said some funny stuff. How about this for a buisness model. STOP TRYING YOU BEST TO RAPE YOUR CUSTOMERS AND MAKE A 7000% PROFIT! I bet if they just sold them a bit cheaper, people would buy more... I don't want a 40$ DVD thanks.
1)Move servers to hosts somewhere like Cambodia.
I digress though, it must be bit torrents fault as they made electronic standards.... might as well sue webpages that host those as well... and all their links... as they are the cause of all my illlllllssss!
Peace,
