Having the game set in the TNG era doesn't necessarily mean they'll be using time travel. At the time of TNG, you could also have missions from DS9 and Voyager, since they all occured at the same time. They might not have a day for day overlap, but for a game, I could consider it acceptable to treat those three as if they were happening simultaneously.

I always wished that you could get a demo of MMORPG's to play before comitting to buying a $50 game and then having to spend more on the monthly fees (though most games do come with a free month). I thought that a good demo would have been to allow full, unrestricted access to the one newbie zone, like Atlas Park in City of Heroes. You can't leave the zone for other higher enemy areas, but within that area you can do anything the regular players can. You can play until you level up a few times, but soon you won't get anywhere beating up on the low level enemies, and by then you can get an idea of whether you want to get the full version. Also, you could also limit the demo players to 1 or 2 classes or whatever. I think this kind of fear to pull the trigger on spending large amounts of money on a game you have to make a decision on by nothing but reviews or other people.

Mario has been successful because it has evolved and maintained/expanded its fanbase, not because its fans carried "the same damn game" for the past 15 years. Super Mario Bros was revolutionary in the platform style and gameplay. Mario 2 had a different style (I think its a fine game, despite some varying opinions on the subject). Mario 3 was arguably the flagship product of the NES, and was yet another evolution with racoon tails, and non-linear level progression and all the other things that made Mario 3 awesome. Mario World was Mario 3 in Super Sayen mode. Then there was Mario RPG, Mario 64, Paper Mario, Mario Sunshine, and of course all the mario sports games. Every game has not only been a differnt version of mario, but practically every game has been as good as or better than its predecesor. Nintendo has delivered to its fans, and that's why its popular, not because the Fanboys (including me) have been blindly loyal to it.

A lightsaber is a Jedi's weapon. They whip it out in any occasion where someone like Han Solo would whip out a blaster.

I think a more intresting point is the ubiquitous use of Jedi deflecting blaster bolts, considering that in Episodes 4-6, Luke deflected a total of 3 blaster bolts, all within a span of 5 seconds. The Jedi didn't seem to have any kind of ranged attack other than reflecting blaster bolts back at the shooter. Sith could shoot lightning, but the Jedi had an effective kill zone of only about 2 meters. I always wondered why they didn't use some non-deflectable weapon, like a flame thrower or something, to take down the Jedi.

It seems like this kind of pet sim game works better in short doses where 100% attention isn't required. If you're playing on the bus and get bumped by someone or have to get off the bus, you don't risk losing life on your character becuase you lost focus for a second or something, so it's a kind of game which works well in a crazy hustle bustle of being in transit or whatever. 14. The real lesson... on Steve Jobs In Praise of Dropping Out · · Score: 2, Insightful

The real lesson should be that you don't need a college degree to be successful ..... but it helps. Stories like this spur people on to believe things like "School is for suckers, I'm going to go make it on my own". For every Steve Jobs, there's a million people who end up working menial jobs at a pathetic salary because they didn't persue their education. Getting an education and getting a good job isn't going to make you a millionare, but more likely than not it'll keep you from being destitue.

College degrees today are quickly becoming what high school degrees were 40 years ago. Advancement in your job is linked to how much education you've gotten. Whether you know more or not is irrelevant, but having degrees count. I have a friend who is a Lt in the Air Force. He's been telling me how a masters degree is quickly becoming a requirement in order to advance into the higher ranks in his department (He's not in R&D or a repair unit or anything like that either). Another example, a few years back another friend of mine was working a summer job for the county doing road maintainence (AKA, scooping up roadkill). Since he wasn't a total screwball like the other full-timers, he got along well with his supervisor. They were discussing my friend's future at some point. My friend wanted to (and did) go to music school, but the supervisor said that if he wanted, after graduation from college, he could recommend him for a supervisor's job working for the county. When my friend asked how a degree in Music Education would be useful working for the county, the supervisor said the degree itself didn't matter, just that you had it. His own degree was in agracultural sciences. So for most mainstream people, a college degree is the best course of action. Maybe you don't have to go into your major's field, but overall you'll be better of having it.

I don't have HDTV, and as far as I know I've never watched anything on an HDTV either, aside from maybe a few seconds while walking through Best Buy. But my question is will HDTV make video games all that much better? Sure movies and TV shows might benefit from improved clarity and resolution, but do video games need it? Would Super Mario Sunshine look any better if it had a few more pixels? How about Halo? It seems that enhanced resolution would only be useful for hyper-realistic pre-rendered movies with millions of surfaces and shading and the like. It seems like if Link were made with an extra 10000 pixels, nobody could tell the difference (except those with HDTV, who want to justify that they can "see" the difference in their video games).

I always felt that when showing the movies to someone who's never seen the movies at all and doesn't know about Luke's father (though most people do know about Vader, since that line is so engrained in pop culture), the proper order should be 4-5-1-2-3-6. Thus you get the story of Darth Vader who's this magic "Force" weilding goon for the empire, and of Luke, this farm boy from a desert planet who also learns of the force from Crazy Old Obi-Wan (Who tells him that Vader killed his father), and then rescues the pricess, joins the rebellion, and kicks ass. Then he goes to learn more of the force from Crazy Green Yoda, but leaves too early to finish his training, gets his butt kicked, and then learns that Vader is his father. Now, start in Episode 1 where you learn how Aniken became a Jedi, how the empire began, and how Aniken became Vader. Now, a small problem with this is that you learn that Leia is Luke's sister right at the end of 3, but that's not so big a deal since Yoda hints at there being another in 5, and you find out about Leia pretty early in 6 anyway. Then after seeing the prequills, you watch ROTJ to see how everything resolves and how Luke redeems Vader and defeats the empire.

Even it there isn't or it isn't enforced all that much, the bracket of people who are going to have a PSP aren't going to be the ones who are going to be watching porn on the bus or in the subway. People with $300 to drop on a PSP probably don't want it getting around the office that they were watching porn on the subway. I would presume that since the gas is used in blasters, it's a high energy compound so it would provide the necessary energy to drive the reaction.

  25. Homework philosophy from my past... on Too Much Homework Can Be Counterproductive · · Score: 1

My calculus teacher in highschool had an intersting philosophy when it came to homework. He would assign homework and would check to see if you'd done it (just to see if you had done it, he didn't collect and grade it). He would record how many homeworks you hadn't done, and then applied a peanalty to your average for the quarter. If you had above a 90% average for the quarter, there was no homework peanalty since you were obviously studying and knew your stuff. If it was between 80 and 89.9, then you lost half a point off your average for each homework you didn't do, 1 point per homework if your average was between 70 and 79.9, etc. Thus, the more you understood, the less homework you had to do. My teacher was fair about it too, the exams were quite fair (All the questions came from old AP exams). For those people who were having trouble understanding the material, they did the homework because they needed the repetition to learn the material, but those who got it weren't burdened with hours of partial fraction expansions and integration by parts.
