I've been using a skype text conference as an invite-only chat room for some of my online friends. Why not IRC? Because skype keeps track of all history and logs so you don't have to idle in the room 24/7 to see what people said when you were away. I have found nothing as convenient and suitable to our purposes. Now, I'm starting to worry about the future. Does anyone have a suggestion for a different system?
One thing that I never got was how an volcano in Antartica actively emitting hydrogen chlorine cannot contribute to stratospheric chlorine. Anywhere else, HCl would just stick to a water droplet and rain down, but we are talking about the most arid continent on earth, with very little precipitation.
Sounds like the first step towards Asimov's future of being educated by tape, because some people's brain patterns are suited to different professions.
Could someone tell me if there is anything wrong with using a light gas cannon as the first two stages of a rocket as John Hunter proposes? Is the amount of propellant needed to fire the gun more than would be required by a traditional kerosene/LOX motor? It sounds to me like a space cannon would be an inexpensive way to launch non-living cargo mass. Has nobody invested in this sort of project because the space gun people all went to work for Saddam Hussein?
It is not new at all that quantum tunneling is an important mechanism in the electron transport chain. The iron-sulfur centers are optimally positioned to optimize the tunneling rate of electrons between them. They knew about this several years ago, when I learned this in an undergrad biophysics class.
The FDA is an affront to medical freedom in the US. Like all regulatory agencies, it has formed a cartel with the businesses it was implemented to regulate. We are left with mainstream medical knowledge subject to lobbyists. The FDA pushes flawed studies as irrefutable science, dangerous drugs, and a diet not suited to humans.
Private, voluntary certification companies like Underwriters Laboratories have an incentive to be honest, because they will go out of business if discredited. Likewise, pharmaceutical companies need the certification of an outside party to gain and keep the trust of consumers. The FDA should not be that party. Unlike the UL, it is a government bureaucracy that does not need to maintain a good reputation to stay in power.
The Gates Foundation is trying to distribute antimalarial drugs to all the poor people in Africa. Too bad there is already a cure for malaria orders of magnitude cheaper: DDT. In epidemiology, you eradicate a disease by preventing its spread, not treating every infected individual. Malaria was already eliminated in places like Sicily by using DDT.
DDT does not thin eggshells of birds. It is not carcinogenic either. I can't tell whether Bill Gates is trying to accomplish anything or just spend lots of money on others out of penance. If the Gates Foundation wants to improve the world, they would have more money for useful charity if they just applied DDT in Africa.
Amidst of rumors of yet another invasion by the heinous creatures of the blue planet, the most Illustrious Council of Elders confirmed that another mechanical war machine recently landed successfully on the homeworld.
K'breel, speaker for the Council, stressed that plans for defense were well underway:
Gentle Citizens, today my gelsacs frumple in anticipation of the successful counterattack on the two-eyed monsters of the blue planet. Our sources indicate that while their latest mechanical terror has an experimental weapon to bore into our colonies, it has landed far from our podhomes and will soon be destroyed by this zunok's unusually powerful dust storms. Victory against our enemies is near! Our scientists report that our climate disruptor probes are currently in full operation and will make the blue planet uninhabitable within the next 5 zon. When dissenters questioned whether the warming of our enemy's planet was due to his own self-destructive habits or our weaponry, K'Breel ordered their gelsacs pierced on the spot.
More relevant here is the fact that the upper limit of stability of any carbon-based macromolecule or polymer is about 400 Celsius, even in "inert" atmospheres due to C-H bonds breaking. Though this does not rule out other chemistries, the news here is about carbon-based life.
At the same time, Ron Paul is correct when he says that American foreign policy (like deposing the democratically elected government of Iran in the 1950s) is, at least partially, responsible for Arab attacks (like the 9/11 incident) against American citizens. Why would Sunni Arabs care what we did to a non-Sunni, non-Arab country?
Of all the games I have played, Homeworld's cinematics have had the most emotional impact on me. The black and white sketches, combined with some scenes scripted using the game engine, were very powerful.

Pretty much all of those advantages used to tout BTC are better achieved through a specie currency like gold.

Their existing high speed rail lines are racking up serious debt. This plan to expand it is difficult to believe.
Googling the researcher's name and his institution only brings up this story. Looks like you someone successfully trolled slashdot.

Wrong. The specific technology in question: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backscatter_X-ray
Climate change?
The cartridge is called .45 ACP, Automatic Colt Pistol. It is understood by gun people that an automatic pistol is not full, but semi-automatic.

They had to pay people to use their search engine?

The daggers the Sikhs carry is more of a challenge not to unsheath them unless Muslim tyrants (Mughals) return.
Iron is unlikely to be depleted any time soon
HP for a laser printer. You were saying?

What's wrong with being generous with other people's money?

You forgot Herzog Zwei.
You don't even need a mandate to use real sugar; just remove all sugar tariffs and corn subsidies.
