Sure, that is a disappointing announcement. I was really looking forward to seeing what Google could do with an online Office app. However, they *ARE* up to something. They're having that secret "invite-only" press conference on, I think, October 26th. Perhaps that's to announce Google's "Calendar app" though. Not sure. I'm waiting excitedly. I'm a big fan of Google (though Google Reader has yet to grow on me at all).
"Under the deal, Google will allow web users to access Sun's OpenOffice from a toolbar."
That doesn't mean Google will launch an online/web-enabled write/spreadsheet application. That could be something as miniscule as linking to OpenOffice.org from the GoogleToolbar to "download" the application. Google has not confirmed the development of a web-enabled word processor. Everyone has simply drawn that conclusion based upon speculation.
Oooo!! I hope the paperclip man got a visual upgrade as well! Can't wait to see him flying at me in 3D, music starts to play in brilliant crescendo as he makes his appearance.
"Do you want to write a memo!?" He asks, confidently.
I just hope that one day, we live in a society where people know the difference between there, they're, and their... to, too, and two... that'd be nice.
It's getting to the point where i'll cream my pants whenever I see a slashdot entry with "Google" in the title.. I just wonder: "Holy crap.. What have they perfected now?"
In my honest opinion, Google needs to pace themselves. I think they're expanding a bit too fast, putting their hands into too many projects all at once without ever concentrating on one single thing. They are spreading out at a rapid pace (Google Maps, Gmail, Google Scholar, Desktop Search, Deskbar, Google's Personalized Startpage, Groups, Froogle, Google Wireless, Google Sitemaps, Web accelerator, Picassa...)...
And with the growth comes a larger probability of mistakes. I'm already starting to see some cracks in some of their products. Nothing bad, really. Just.... I can tell they need to take their time and patch up some holes that they haven't had the time to do yet.
I'm one of Google's biggest fans. I think they're great! They just need to be careful. They don't want to confuse and overwhelm everyone.
Instant messaging is simultaneously too casual and too intrusive
I don't necessarily agree with that. That seems a pretty subjective statement, in my opinion. I will say that email is a different medium than Instant Messaging. They are used to accomplish different tasks. They're the phillips head and flat-headed screw-drivers in the electronic messaging toolbox.. IM might be good for quick instances where a fast-answer is needed to a short question, whereas Email would be more appropriate for more long-winded, thoughtout dialogues involving several complex viewpoints. IM would be better served for a quick back-and-forth transfer of information..
Basically email is to writing a letter as Instant Messaging is to using a telephone.
Perhaps it should be:
Longhorn, c:\settings\profiles\username\29ew98j2\documents
Longhorn X+, c:\settings\profiles\username\stored files\common\x2928371827382732612\documents\userna me
I was always afraid once long filenames were coming about, Microsoft would create directories like:
C:\This is the Windows Folder - Don't Make Changes Here, Ok?\System Settings - These files are hidden by default\
C:\Here are your personal settings\Your documents are in here\

Well these are all problems that Google should fix, damnit! :)
Geez. It almost crashed my browser >:(

I want something official or nothing at all.

I thought he said "Feel the CHEESE!"
If you think Fox News and its news programming doesn't lean to the right, then you're completely blind.
The NeoCon Movement... *shudders* Yeesh.. It just sounds so EVIL and sinister!!
What movement? The only movement our country has is the slow movement down a metaphorical toilet bowl.
First MySpace and now IGN.. They're really wanting to get that Pro-Bush message out to all them young people!
Here's the link. It was News Corp.
Skype already turned down a billion dollar deal from another company. They're holding on to it.. I'm sure they wont sell to eBay.
Goodbye 8-track, hello cassette!! Welcome to 1998, Slashdot!
Ok, so I'm speaking out of anger... out of pain from rejection.. Can you feel it?
Neato! A game has been developed that looks like a driving sim from 1998! Cool!
"along with the new Microsoft Vista logo, has made it worse." I spent all night in mspaint designing that logo!! graaargh!!!
I saw this on Technovelgy a month and a half ago..
I just hope that one day, we live in a society where people know the difference between there, they're, and their... to, too, and two... that'd be nice.
Do you really believe the average cell phone user could learn morse code? It took me 5 minutes to explain T9 to someone yesterday.

Ahh! Good! It's a guide for people on a unix system running sendmail, thus eliminating 99% of the article's usefulness to a mass populace!
Careful. Not everyone's lucky enough to still have those :)
