    My first x86 computer was a 386 with 2 megs of ram and a 40 MB hard drive.

    I used it for word processing, spreadsheets, charts, databases, basic programming and even games!

    Our need for something faster is somewhat artificial. People don't need to have the latest and the greatest unless they want floating transparent rotating windows or to play duke nukem forever.

    Our perception of utility and function has been distorted by our voracious consumerism.

    By our logic and reasoning, if we were ever visited by a more advanced civilization, all of our technology would become obsolete instantly. The fact that it worked right up to that moment is completely irrelevant.

    I sometimes drive my 17 year old car for fun and it works great. It is looked down upon by society, but it does the same basic tasks that the newer cars on the street can.

    That was a brilliant description, and I agree with your post. I believe that it is very likely that Lincoln was suffering of depression.

    What I was trying to say is that Lincoln did not necessarily get involved in what he did BECAUSE of depression, like the parent comment implied. I believe that depression can do no good, and that great things do not come out of if, but in spite of it.

    Depression should never be confused with melancholy or sadness. In fact, some people describe depression as the complete lack of an emotional response.

    Concern, passion, and a troubled soul can embark you on a quest for change. Crossing the line into depression will only help cripple your chances.

    Saying that you are depressed when you what you feel is sadness is like calling evolution "just a theory". Both evolution and depression are very specific scientific terms that have a completely different colloquial meaning.

    You make a good point, even if you were half joking.

    We can hate Microsoft all that we want, but we cannot deny that there are many things that we take for granted that are a direct result of MS and its policies.

    Had Apple won its lawsuit agains Microsoft in the case of the GUI, Apple would have become a court endorsed monopoly.

    Because of MS we have comodity hardware made of compatible chunks. Without that we might not even have Linux.

    A free browser in every PC might have killed Netscape, but it helped the internet spread to the popularity that it has today in such a short time.

    MSN could be the default search engine of any browser that Microsoft decided to bundle.

    Opera uses Google as a default search engine because of a smart bussiness deal.

    MS could easily do the same.

    MySQL and Oracle are two different products aimed at two very different markets.

    While MySQL will be more than enough for many uses, there are some situations where using it instead of something like Oracle is irresponsible, if not downright criminal.

    Saying that MySQL can compete with Oracle in terms of speed, features, and clustering capabilities is an argument that is not grounded in reality.

    OCD is a powerful beast. Please do not underestimate its power. It makes the daily struggle that some of us have to cope with every single instant of our lives seem trivial. It is insulting to say the least.

    I accepted the fact that I will have to live with OCD years ago. It does not make things any easier or any more possible.

    OCD is not a behavioral problem. The odd behavior is the result of OCD. And even if you can avoid the behavior you still have to deal with the constant and crippling mental distress and anguish.

    Brain chemistry cannot be altered through the power of the mind anymore than a diabetic can produce insulin by the power of will alone.
    You cannot wish it to go away. You cannot use your mind to destroy the problem if the problem is the mind itself.

    Wishing away distress and pain is nothing more than new age BS. It should be given the same credibility as crystals, pyramids or magnets.

    I fear that the following is because of the patch/update.

    All of my Visual Studio versions (2003, 2005 express) have stopped working. They display a message of "unknown error" when starting. I can only get them to run if I shut down explorer.exe before launching them.

    I've been using a ux theme patch for years to be able to use unsigned themes.

    Has anyone experienced similar problems? Can anyone suggest a solution?

    Ubuntu's philosophy is to provide a free operating system for the masses. It was never intended to be a commercial product like Novel's Linux (whatever you call it these days) or Red Hat.

    If MS Office were to disappear completely Linux still wouldn't become the standard desktop operating system.

    Graphic artists need their Photoshop and Engineers need their Auto Cad. Grandpa needs a machine that will run the new craptastic greeting card software that he bought at the local XMart and junior likes to play games on the computer. I like to have the ability of going out and buying any computer on the market and know that all of its hardware will have Linux drivers.

    Linux might be getting better and better, but it is still very far of being a desktop OS for the masses.

    For hardware and software vendors to support Linux it needs to be profitable. It will not be profitable until Linux becomes a mainstream OS. Linux will not become a mainstream OS until hardware and software vendors support Linux.

    It is not Microsoft's fault. In fact, had they made a better OS with better licensing Linux wouldn't be as widespread as it is today.

    Could you please provide a link that explains how to use an MSDE file without installing the MSDE server? The link that you provided only reinforced my belief that you have to install MSDE. The following statement is what I replied to:
    I want a database tied to the application, but I don't want to have to install the application AND a database instance
    I don't know how to use an MSDE file without installing a MSDE server instance. Having that knowledge would have been really usefull for my last app that runs directly from a CD.

    The guy was very specific in specifying that he does not want to install a database instance on the client. Therefore, a database server like MySQL is not a suitable solution. Not because it cannot be installed in the client but because he does not want to install a database in the client.

    SQL Server Express IS a dedicated database server. You need to run it as a service. If you want to bundle a database to your app try to use an Access or sqlite file. http://www.sqlite.org/

    With traditional controllers players can rest their hands on the table, their laps, their stomachs, lying down with their hands on the floor or above their heads. I cannot imagine having to hold my hands in the air in front of me for more than 10 minutes with the new device. Then again, perhaps I am just lazy.

    Digg is great for learning of new technologies. Slashdot is great because of its discussions. They are complementary websites. I don't see digg replacing slashdot anytime soon, yet, I am glad that digg is there to fill my need of having "as many tech news as possible" available.

    Trying to have good discussions in Digg is futile because of its moderation system. And whenever discussion worthy news are available they are quickly buried by ten articles of what someone somewhere might have said about the color of the new Nintendo console.
