    instead of saying tivo is going to hurt consumers (which they are, in a way) they are doing this for their best interestes. if they can offer a licence agreement for people who what to use the patent, then it would be a win for everyone.

    maybe the sticker has the reative material on the underside and the color chaning material on above? two reactions?
    I'm not a chemical engineer but that sounds rather complex compaired with just picking up the food, looking at it, feeling if its firm, etc.

    Some of the supermarkets near me have started doing something this. They added (often lcd) TVs to the checkout lanes. They play (the same) short 'ad' on each. It is usually a fake cooking show or the like, trying to inspire the shopper to buy this or that. And not only is it video, but they each have a speaker pointed at the checkout line. Talk about in your face marketing!

    from TFA: The devices communicate via RS-232. Even mice dont us rs232 commonly any more. Seems like the author just wanted to include some techno-babble to impress the average joe reader. It loses its effect on the average joe slashdotter. In other news, The Electronic Industries Alliance (EIA) releases the newest revision to the RS232 standard; RS-232-C... Ah wait that was 1969!!

    If you want 4 cores (or even 8) in a mother board, this is already around. It is easy to do with opterons or xeons. I doubt intel would add another socket to a desktop market board to enable 4 cores. But then again intel did make the P4, not the smartest move...

    I would be interested to know where you read that!

    Its nice to know that some companies are willing to open their doors to the Tech comunity. Reminds me of Open Source Software... but only with hardware

    It still worries me that google will soon know everything about everyone. I hope they dont share that data with ANYONE.

    Instead of fixing our problems and looking for solutions, lets go into space to get away from it all.
    some how this seems like a bad idea, or atleast a bad reason. Why not go into space for some positive reason? like to learn or solve a problem like over population...

    WAKE UP... this is microsoft. the evil empire. it would be like darth vador all of a suden calling the rebel base and being like.. I'm sorry guys, lets work it all out.

    You have to stay on your toes, if microsoft can make linux apps run in windows they can destroy more of linux's market share and support. just because they say something nice doesn't mean we, the open source comunity, should embrace them and forget all of the evil things they have done.
    Be cautious! if you work with fire, there is a decent chance of getting burned...

    now if they do some how want to work together, have them do something for us... like put off vista another 9 months :)

    anyway, I hope i dont get modded flamebait...
    just my words of caution.

    Not to spread rumors but...

    Maybe they havn't released the laywers because there are merger talks...

    If they arn't trying to cover it up or anything it may be because they are actually talking about merging and are close to doing it.

    Maybe this would make crossfire take off more too.

    I disagree. If you 'dont' want to install the (not so)critical update you can migrate to a different operating system. (linux, *BSD, mac, etc)
    the issue is all in the software. hopefully the major software / game producers will wake up and start coding for non windows environments. but because they havn't, any one who needs to run a program that only works in windows, still has to use windows...

    Although you can make a duel boot. just be careful of windows noticing. I've heard stories of windows machine's detecting a linux install and sudenly corrupting data all over the disk... a last ditch effort to prevent the user from switching OS.

    luckily for the basic user all they need has been written or ported to non windows environments. Everything from an office suite to instant messageing software.

    I think one of the biggest reason of why manned space flight is kept around is all of the people who want to be manning those space flights. Think about how many kids want to grow up to be an astronaut... and think about those who are. Its a lot more fun to actually go into space then watch a robot do your job.
