There was just a story of a young german couple putting their baby up for sale on ebay as a joke. While they initially had their baby taken away by child services, prosecutors realized it had been a joke and the baby is back in the hands of its parents. Our stupid American justice system can't take a joke.

"Except that all unions are administrated by the "scum and freeloaders" group. That's what unions are all about, defending the right of not working properly." I am a member of a union, the cinematographers guild. I work as a motion picutre camera assistant. It is not unheard of to work over 24 hours on a shoot (many television shows in New York shoot over 13 hours every day, 5 days a week. By the end of the week people are working 16 hours, halfway into Saturday, and then begin work monday morning at 6 or 7). It is the job of a producer to work a crew-member as hard as they can, for as long as they can, with as little pay/rest/recompense as possible. It is the job of my union to keep me protected from this, and they are fighting a losing battle, as every contract renegotiation we lose more ground to the producers. Most of the people who administer my union are/were working as cinematographers or camera assitants. If you would consider the people who worked in the field and left ( or even stayed working in the field) to continue on to help their brothers and sisters get a fair deal as "scum and [freeloading]", then please rethink your statement. If you are speaking sarcasticly I couldn't pick that up from your statement.

  15. Content is the Key on Bad Movies to Blame for Box Office Slump · · Score: 1

This may be true for others, but I pay more than $10 living in New York City, and I go once a week. The experience in a theater is better than in any home. If it's a quiet showing where I am one of 10 people in the theater its like a private screening on a screen that's 20' x 40'. If it's the premier of a cult-blockbuster with a packed house, there is as much energy in the room as at a world series game. Regardless of price, I will always go to the movies. The real way to bring people back to the theaters is to get rid of the comercials, lower concession prices, increase the number of previews, delay the dvd release time, but most importantly improve the content of the films being made. Of course nobody wants to pay $10 to see the crap film that they can rent 3 months from now. But if one could see something of real value, with good writing, and real content, they would be more interested in spending that much.

Actually, this is already being implamented by the US Military in Iraq. It is used at checkpoints to speak to aproaching parties. And the Military has signed a new contract with American Technology for $1.1 million to deliver these LRAD's (long range acoustice divices) to the Marines. "LRAD is a breakthrough long-range hailing and warning, directed acoustic device that is designed to determine intent, change behavior, and support various rules of engagement. With LRAD, a sentry can issue a focused verbal challenge with instructions in excess of 300 hundred yards, and follow up with a warning tone to cause behavior change. Recorded messages can be selected and delivered over LRAD in multiple languages."[from an American Technology press release. regarding this contract] So far this is the biggest contract the company has and most likely, for years to come, the most lucrative applications will come from military applications, both as defense and as weapons. But ultimatly, comercial application will exceed the military in the technology's application and source of revenue for ATC.

  25. Re:Three CCDs on Reviews for Digital Camcorders? · · Score: 3, Informative

As a professional I concur, but for proffesional application or if it was in his price range. These cameras generally run much more than regular consumer cameras. Look for a camera with the largest ccd you can get in your range. The larger the ccd the more information it can absorb (in a sense). CCD size can be compared to film- smaller (8mm), largest (70mm/imax). It follows that the small sizes have show more grain (in video this translates what looks like static) when viewed in larger formats (tv vs. the small viewfinder). Also look for a camera with a low lux (1 or 6db).

Optics, like lens is important but don't let it spoil your search. Cannon makes excellent lenses as does Sony (many of which are Zeiss). Someone else mentioned optical vs. digital zoom in another post and are correct. The longer the optical zoom the better becasue this relys exclusivly on the optics of the camera verses the CCD capacity of camera. Digital zoom enlarges sections of the image using information from the whole image on the ccd, resulting in pixilation.

Viewfinder. Best is flipout of largest size. Many of the small eyelevel viewfinders are B&W so a camera with a flip-out screen will allow you to see the image in color, as well as interact more with your subject because your nose won't be pressed up to the camera. Be aware that in bright light and at different angels, the flip-out may not be viewable. Also of note is that the flip-out brightness level can fool you into thinking that the exposure level of the image is higher than it actually is.

Audio is always a problem on camcorders, specificly because the microphones generally just take in all sound from every direction. If there is one, try to get a camera who's mic is directional towards the front of the camera. That way you will hear what is infront of the lens more than behind or to the sides.

Format should also be of consideration. mini DV is better than digital 8 and microDV. Do not consider camera that use digital 8 or micro as media. MiniDV stores the highest res video of the three and if you get another camera years down the line you will not be stuck with a camera that only uses digital 8 (which has become the equvalent- already- as 8 and hi-8 video) or micro (of which selection is small, as well as having tapes which are difficult to find). The ubiquity of miniDV tapes should sell you alone.

Finally, Connectivity should be considered. Make sure the camcorder you get has both rca connections (this can come in the format of 1/8in mini plug to rca or rca to rca) and IEEE1394 (aka dv interface for computers, in case you ever want to back up your video and make a dvd or just edit birthday parties or even let you kids shoot/edit their own movies).

IMHO canon elura is a very good consumer camera, but this is a year ago or so. There may even be better by now.

I hope that some of what I've said is helpful, and that you enjoy whatever camera you buy.
