Honestly, VMWare is the best way to use Windows:-)
That is, if you prefer Windows to be slow and clunky...er.
I am one of the few who are stuck using Windows, simply because no version of Linux supports my wireless card or my sound card. Its a WMP 11 v2.7, and ndiswrapper doesnt seem to work with it. If anyone else could give me an idea of what to do, aside from buying hardware (trying to go cheaply, otherwise why switch?), then score one for the Linux zealots...
which appends hyperlinks to existing content. These hyperlinks, of course, point to their services, such as maps for addresses, isdn numbers for books, etc.
Shouldnt that be ISBN, not ISDN...Looks like someone needs to go over their story before it is posted...
While I can agree that it seems as though you hear more about Windows being hacked more than Linux, I don't think it's 100% software problems. Mainly, I think it has to do with the user. I run XP Pro, and have a 2003 server that sits behind my router, and both run software firewalls just to be sure. They run 2 virus checkers every morning at 3am, using AVG and Symantec, and have never had a virus. Spyware tool runs about 4am, and only picks up the standard stuff in my temp internet files, not actual programs running. So, I consider myself 100% protected. However, if I ran Linux (have tried about 4 different versions, damn those wireless card people and not supporting me) I would be hacked while I took my morning poo. So, all in all, the whole "My Windows can beat up your Linux" is all from a certain point of view, polled from a certain group of people.
Thats why you pick one OS and stick with it. Why mix and match the software? People that complain about Microsoft, then willingly use their products and complain more get annoying. I use Microsoft, just because I dont want to waste me time tinkering with every little thing. It's worth the money to have it work straight out of the box.
I wonder how many anti-Microsoft, Oh Linux thou art great change their minds when they play their Xbox...
On a side note, how come Sygate detected a port scan from slashdot after I posted?
Somebody is scanning your computer.
Your computer's TCP ports:
444, 1080, 3127, and 8000 have been scanned from 66.35.250.150..
02/11/05 11:00:10 IP block 66.35.250.150
Trying 66.35.250.150 at ARIN
Trying 66.35.250 at ARIN
Or look at firefox.."Look at us, just made it to version 1.0, updates to be released shortly."...
Of course, I use Firefox, but the whole Anti-Microsoft gets annoying...The only reason it has more updates and patches is because more people use it, and so it is targeted more.
But in a Windows environment, there's only so much I can do
How about just teaching them what to download and what not to? My folks have used Windows since 3.11, and after being shown what not to do and what was ok, they have never had a problem...damn, i hate people who bash Windows because it's easier to use, and so it might be easier to break...
If you dont count searching all over the Internet for a driver, or a how to or the latest latest kernel update as tech support, then yea, go Linux...whoot...
A buddy of mine got banned from Wal-mart about 7+ years ago (even though he went in all the time and they never checked) for using a bootdisk on all of their display computers, and using fdisk to wipe the partition...guess that taught them a little about locking down machines...
This doesnt matter...it will NEVER work...how are you going to block someone from snapping a picture of you and blurring out your face...there must be millions of old-school cameras out there that wont be affected, plus does anyone really think people are going to carry devices around that block cameras? They might have a patent on it, hell, I can have a patent on underwater circle jerking, but it doesnt mean shit.
What??! You'll give money to Microsoft?!!...but...but...it's supposed to be free! You're supposed to use a crappy OS that everyone can pick apart and spend hours configuring it to open something stupid such as Xwindows or Ksomething...don't you like to configure configure configure???
I have a hardware firewall (GTA GB500), 30 character password, and all remotely personal information stored on a 256bit AES encrypted volume
Wow...I'm speechless...if this is all on a personal machine to protect your email and kiddie porn, then what a fuckin loser...remember, between the user and the computer, the COMPUTER is supposed to be the tool....
It's not about whether to disable ads or not..hell, every site you look at, even news sites have ads...its about installing programs other than what you are under the impression you are getting.
I would just take it a hazard that comes with the job, much like construction workers who get bachaches, etc...Of course, if I was lucky enough to find a job in the computer field, then I wouldnt complain about it to begin with.
You take it in the ass and dont bitch to no one, since you were dumb enough to outsource to someone 3000 miles away instead of having someone down the hall do the work for you.
why must it be fought at every turn? It's inevitable that one power will be in more control than another, and there will NEVER be such a thing as equality, so why not be the ones on top? I can guarantee that no one on slashdot has ever had the rights violated because of the FBI reading your email or anything. Personally, I dont care, since I'm not doing anything illegal. These are the same people who would bitch and moan if they got a letter with anthrax in the mail, because the government didnt protect them...and now they want to bitch about someone miles away reading their boring email and screaming "you're intruding, you're intruding"...take the good with the bad, and get on with it.
Setting up linux:
1. Find crappy outdated hardware
2. Download 3 ISO images from slow-ass servers
3. Boot CD
4. Pick through countless useless options
5. Install: wait 3 hours
6. Pick GUI (the least crappiest looking)
7. Decipher what X is for (Xwindows Xterm XWhatthefuk)
8. Boot into linux
9. Click on program, enter root password everytime (hurrah)
10. Look at assload of unused programs you install
11. Look at crappy fonts
12. Realize vital piece of hardware (wireless card, etc) doesnt work
13. Go to friends to look up answer
14. Type cryptic command to change a setting
15. Still doesnt work, drink
16. Download another 3 CD's worth of crap
17. Repeat
Setting up Windows
1. Turn on computer with CD
2. Hit 'Next' 5 times
3. Boot into Windows
4. Run Windows Update
5. Download Zone Alarm / Sygate
6. Enjoy
Whatever, its all about knowing which security holes to exploit. Someone would have a better chance hacking a Linux box than my PC...just because 'tard with a PC is too dumb to patch their system, everyone thinks "Windows sucks, Windows sucks"...put the same 'tard with a Linux machine, and the same thing would happen. Blame the user, not the equipment.
I'm an excellent driver....UH OHHHHH...gotta get some cheetos....yeeeeaaaa.....yeaaaaaa ok...

You know the situation before you go there, so don't go and then complain about it later...deal with it, or dont go.
C-U-N-T, why?

Maybe they realized that Linux isnt the great OS that everyone here seems to think.
