a few of the ships didn't look quite like star wars like ships. mostly the ship that we see taking off from the ground. just didn't ring true as a star wars ship and instead looked like something they were giong to use in another project and used it in this one instead.

During WWII, were there any fancy cars tootin around the war zone, or was everything beat down looking?
That might have been the whole point...how many teenagers do you know that DON'T act like that? I thought it was more realisitc in fact that he wasn't acting like some crappy 30 year olds playing teenagers like the OC or Dawsons Creek or some other crap show.
