  1. The headline is backward. The vote in the Washington State legislature was to go on daylight saving time year-round. They wouldn't need federal approval to go on standard time year-round.

  2. No, PARC made billions for Xerox on Google's Waymo Risks Repeating Silicon Valley's Most Famous Blunder (arstechnica.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

The behemoth that was Xerox was built to design and sell photocopiers. That's what the design engineers, field repair force, and sales and marketing were geared up to do. PARC produced a plethora of new technologies, but the one that fit the organization was the laser printer. Xerox coupled that to a scanner to create the digital photocopier, from which they made billions of dollars.

I still go to Whole Foods every week or so, but when they ask "Are you an Amazon Prime member" I answer no. I can't be arsed to pull out my phone, start their app, and show them a code to scan, and I think the cashiers are happy to skip that step.

It was only after the developer pushed the update to his users that he noticed and discovered the bug after users started flooding his Play Store page with crash complaints and bad reviews."

To perform this DOS attack, you must have a device physically connected to the CAN bus. If an attacker has that kind of access to your car, a DOS attack is not your biggest problem. The attacker could just as easily pump 120 volts into the bus and fry every component. Or leave a time bomb on the driver's seat.

  8. San Francisco to Portland is 635 miles as the crow flies. A plane with a range of 700 miles could not serve this route. The FAA requires that an airplane have enough fuel to get to its primary destination, then from there to the nearest diversion field (in case the primary is unavailable), and still have 45 minutes of cruising capability so it can circle the field waiting for a landing slot.

  9. "Jeff Manning" is the name of the most famous political reporter in the Portland metro area. He reports for both The Oregonian, the only daily newspaper, and for Oregon Public Radio, the state network of NPR-affiliated public radio stations.
