- [four letter "name"][two letter service type][2 numbers] eg) jdelwb03.domain.com
+ easy to determine the function and name
- hard to remember and pronounce, once you run out of four character servers, determining the name and function will be difficult. Joe's Deli and John's Delivery will have conflicting names
Why can't you just name them web.joesdeli.com and web.johnsdelivery.com?
Miles usually expire after a couple of years if you don't use them. For a two-year window, you'd have to fly over 13000 miles a day to earn 10,000,000 miles. Pilots don't get that much time in the air.
American Express Rewards Program gives a point for every dollar you spend and one can then transfer these points to a participating partner airline. Maybe they'll partner up so I only have to spend $10,000,000 on the amex this year...
It depends on what kind of website. I've ran websites off DSL before and thinking about it scares the crap out of me.
For a real website, first and foremost, do you have a static IP? If not, forget it. You'll spend the whole time either
a. worrying about what happens if they change your IP address or
b. chasing after that jumping IP address which will envolve at least 12 hours of downtime to get the registry to update.
However, for all the college kids out there who don't have a lot of money, I gladly help them set up hosting on their DSL connection. Quite a few of our customers do it, but honestly, with our colo prices, I don't understand why.:-)
Under a new feature scheduled to launch Tuesday night, the rankings of a search engine devoted to advertisers will be determined in part by how much Web sites offer to be listed in specific categories.
Before, all advertisers paid a set fee and were randomly displayed in random order. Now there highest paying customers are shown first.
While I wish they didn't do this, as it affects our advertising budget, I think this is logical and I support their decision to make money. After all, if google doesn't make money, they'll go under and we'll all lose access to the best search engine.
De Viron's team found that earthlings can expect the length of an average day to increase by 11 millionths of a second per decade, corresponding to an overall increase of about one ten-thousandth of a second by the close of the century.
This increase is so small that no human will ever notice the increase during their lifetime, much less on a day to day scale.
Wal-Mart gave $50 Million a few years ago to the University of Arkansas College of Business. They now have the finest computer labs and *every* classroom has everything a professor could possibly want to use.
However, Wal-Mart has done some really awful things to contractors who work for them. (I've heard other stories) A good friend of mine did a bunch of work for them. After completing almost all of the project, one of the things they were working on didn't test properly. Instead of allowing my friend to go back and correct the problem, Wal-Mart said they couldn't fix the issue and refused payment for the *complete* project.
It's been tied up in court for almost two years and my friend has almost gone under because of this. They can afford to hold out until my friend settles for pennies on the dollar.
Wal-Mart does donate money, don't get me wrong, but don't kid yourself. They are a corporation and it's all about the bottom line.
I've been using this sig for almost 2 years I would guess. I have no idea exactly how long and have even less of an idea on why I chose to use an unordered list.:-)
Also, is Tier Networking OpenSRS?
Yes, we do use the OpenSRS system for a number of reasons but the biggest one by far is their support. We could go with other registrars and offer cheaper domains to our customers but in the end, they would be suffering if there was ever a problem. In the last two years, I've been extremely satisfied with the service we can provide through their system.
If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly.
Actually, it's just a coincidence. The Tier Networking blurb is part of my sig which has it's own HTML unordered list. I have a +1 Bonus but have never used it because I don't want people to think I'm only posting to advertise my business. IMO, my link is no different than the thousands of other users with other website sigs.
However, if you are interested, we will be running banners on OSDN as soon as they accept American Express for payment.
This project has been going since 1994. Congrats to the FreeDOS team! I don't think I could have watched technology go by for 8 years and still work on the same project...
Don't B*tch :-)

Before people start griping about why on earth anyone would want DOS now days, keep in mind there are many things FreeDOS would be useful for.
Boot disks. A DOS boot disk with fdisk, partition magic, norton, or ghost is still quite useful at times.
Engineering. Lots of engineering programs at univerisity's currently run on older OSes then we'd all like. FreeDOS will allow schools to use older software without having to pay licensing fees for the OS too.
Distribution. It's easier to share old DOS games that no longer work under windows with your
Emulation. Unix people can use this to load DOS programs.
I'm sure I'm probably overlooking most potential uses of FreeDOS but I'm going to call it quits and let the rest of the group figure them out...
I am not a tax attorney. However, here's some info that will probably help your LUG.
You're trying to become a charitable organization 501(c)(3) but in reality, I think you're probably a social club 501(c)(7) and I'm sure the IRS feels the same way too.
If you're really serious about getting your email back onto the Internet, you need to make some network changes. Changing the IP address isn't enough. You'll need to change the subnet the mail server is on as well as the domain name. If you're interested in backward compatibility, as I'm sure you are, you can set up a host on the old address to forward packets on to the new host.
Really, now. Are probable 18 year old script kiddies really worth our time?
IMO, yes, they are worth our time because if we don't influence them now while they are young, they will grow up to cause even more damage.
If parents would try harder to properly raise their children, a lot of our social problems would go away. Until then, we, as society, must strive to properly influence the "bad" kids.

OpenMosix

Before it gets slashdotted by everyone trying to figure out WTF OpenMosix is, here's the FAQ from their website.
Can I mix Mosix and openMosix nodes in the same cluster?
No. Just like the older Mosix, you should not mix nodes because the protocols are subject to un-announced changes from version to version. On top of that, every new version has bug fixes which warrant updating to the new kernels.
Whois the copyright holder of openMosix?
All the old Mosix code is copyright by Prof. Amnon Barak of Hebrew University of Jerusalem. All new code of openMosix is copyright 2002 by Moshe Bar, Tel Aviv.
How do I upgrade to openMosix?
openMosix maintains for now compatibility with the user-land tools of Mosix 1.5.2. I also have a port to openMosix of the user-land tools which will be released soon. To upgrade to openMosix, simply download the openMosix patch from www.openmosix.org and apply the patch with
patch -Np1 < openMosix1.5.2moshe
to a stock Linux kernel of 2.4.14 or 2.4.16 respectively. Make sure to get your old.config file (the.config file remains compatible) and recompile your kernel and modules. Then, reboot.
Is openMosix a fork of Mosix?
Right now, it is a pure fork. Eventually, it will become a separate clustering platform with its own distinct feature set and behaviour.
If you had redundant firewalls, the part of not being able to manage it wouldn't be as bad. Compined with some network intrusion detection and you've made a rediculous idea somewhat entertaining.
- ArsDigita software enables content creation through collaboration
- ArsDigita software and consulting expand Red Hat's ability to deliver the benefits of collaboration to the enterprise
Okay, I can understand those reasons, but these? How much does it cost to have slashdot run a story?
If you ever change your mailserver to norm from cliff, you'll break a lot of the older mailling list subscriptions your customers may have.
+ easy to determine the function and name
- hard to remember and pronounce, once you run out of four character servers, determining the name and function will be difficult. Joe's Deli and John's Delivery will have conflicting names
Why can't you just name them web.joesdeli.com and web.johnsdelivery.com?
What if all Katz stories were only available to subscribers?
I really think us folk who haven't paypal'd a subscription yet, shouldn't be allowed the priveledge of reading Katz stories.

Wouldn't that be a great job? Spending all day handling complaints / fixing problems for people who don't properly pronunciate and articulate.
Sounds like my old tech support days. :-)

If you don't decide to buy a premade solution, we're very happy with our Sun Netra X1s and at $995, they're quite affordable.
