See, that's the funny thing about any time that Bush says that XXXX can testify "but not under oath". The only thing that it successfully does is make him look like an obstruction and an asshole. The fact is that it's illegal to lie to Congress, anyway... Oath or no oath.

Leading up to the launch of the Nintendo DS, all that I heard, non-stop, was how the PSP was the greatest system every made, blah, blah, blah, blah. Plays movies, blah blah, better graphics, blah, blah. Some months later, the DS was absolutely crushing it in sales numbers. Even now, while I'll admit that the PSP is doing better than, say, Gamegear, it's still not coming close to living up to the hype produced for it. So, while it's not a catastrophic failure, the marketing bullshit to revenue ratio is less than favorable... especially when you factor in that UMD was a spectacular failure in the vein of Betamax (the studios no longer being at all interested in it and all). The fact of the matter is that Sony is having its lunch eaten on two fronts now with the PSP not having the expected market and the PS3s sales having been vastly overestimated.

  9. What, more of the same? on The PSP's Comeback Trail · · Score: 3, Interesting

The PSP, much like the PS3, is an albatross. Sony got locked into the idea that all that people wanted was more of the same but with better graphics... That and the mistaken idea that everyone wants to play Sony formatted movies on their game systems. I remember when the PSP was coming out and a bunch of my friends were all yammering about how cool it was that the PSP played movies. I'd already had the benefit of tagging along to E3 with a game company that I did some stuff for, and tried out the DS. Right then I knew that the DS had something new to offer. The PSP movies? All that I could think was "Why would I want to buy the same movie twice?" Sony is hugely disconnected with the market. They just don't seem to understand what players want and seem to be more interested in telling them what they should want. That's why the PSP tanked, that's why the PS3 tanked. If each of them is starting to show some life now, it's not necessarily because Sony understands the gaming consumer any better. More than likely it's a response to price cuts and unavailability of the desired alternative platforms (Wii and DS, X360 with Halo 3, etc..)

I would venture to say that they got caught up in their own Jack Thompson supplied publicity machine. The thing that got them on the map, and kept them there for so long, was Jack Thompson coming after them every time they released a violent video game. Enter Manhunt 2: The game that is incredibly violent but devoid of any of the other things that made the GTA games entertaining. I would say that, yeah, they're screwed if they don't get GTA IV in good form, but the sad thing is that you know that Jack Thompson, Katie Couric, and everyone else who's gone out of their way to "highlight" games like Manhunt 2 will probably take credit for their downfall.

Mark talked about how he auditioned. He looked at the concept art for the character and the thing he noticed was the smile. Well, in my opinion there is no difference. however, where the powers that be are concerned, the difference is that the cable is put out there without government subsidies (I think). The phone lines were specifically built as a result of government action. That said, while the government isn't paying for cable infrastructure, they are the ones who allowed only one owner in a municipality, so I think it should be a requirement that the bandwidth owners lease at a reasonable rate to competitors.

Hahahahaha! Oh, that story is rich! Kudos to her for doing what I never had the balls to do. My personal story is one of absolute horror. Last year, I was a comcast customer. I would frequently have lag spikes that pushed my latency up into the seconds (yes, that is more than 1x1000ms). Every damn time that I called Comcast they'd send out a service tech who might be there at the time of a spike or might not be. It was all very random. So, finally I reached my breaking point and I told them that they'd better not just send me another tech who'd tell me that my signal was fine. I was told that I was getting a "network specialist" and this definitely wasn't just another tech. Well, the guy calls me from the road and didn't seem to know what I was talking about when I said "network specialist". Then he showed up and not only was he a regular tech but he was a regular tech that was completely dismissive of my problem. He acted like I wasn't really having a problem because, at the time, I was running on my wireless router... Nevermind all the logs that I'd taken from a direct connection to the modem. So, after nearly throwing the guy out of my house, I called Comcast and started screaming. This got me somewhere as I finally got escalated to the CEO's office where they had a customer care executive assigned to me. Their network guys looked at my latency and determined that my problem was only happening 2% of the time... Which, regardless of when it was occurring, was acceptable to them so while they could have alleviated the issue by adding another link they wouldn't. We just got FiOS in my current place about a month ago and Comcast called to try to get us back. The guy that called seemed to think that all verizon connections were DirecTV and had no idea what FiOS was. He also threw out that BS number of how many of their customers are satisfied and told me that their service is "much better now". I told him it would take an act of God to get me to go back to Comcast. It was a very cathartic phone call to get. I hope that the recording goes to upper management but I doubt it will.

And then some. I had Comcast internet service in my last place and was regularly receiving ping times that measured in seconds (yes, seconds, not milliseconds). I'd call their tech support lines and they'd jerk me around, tell me that they'd send someone out. The techs would come to my place, find that my signal strength was where it needed to be and leave... and my problem would remain. Finally, they told me that they'd send me a "network specialist". It sounded like a bullshit title and I asked them to clarify that this wasn't just another tech and they told me that it was someone to handle situations like mine... The guy called me before the appointment and acted kind of confused when I asked if he was the network specialist. Then he shows up, looks at my ping logs, and acts like I'm making the whole thing up. I basically threw him out and then finally worked my way up to the CEO's office where I was assigned some customer care councilor or something. He had the network people look at my connection and they determined that my connection was only going bad 2% of the time (a number which I'd dispute) so while they could add in another link for my area they decided not to. In the process, they forever lost me as an internet customer and I hate them so much that my roommate has no problem with us ditching them as soon as FiOS gets turned on in our neighborhood after all the horror stories that I have of Comcast support.
