Most people I know think they have HDTVs, and then I point out that they have merely EDTV, or a HD-Ready TV.
Isn't the only difference between an HDTV and an HD-ready TV the existence of an internal tuner? How would that make a difference as far as game consoles are concerned?
The funny/sad thing is that their competition is pretty inept, so chances are they'll still win this generation anyway. They'll probably be fucked next generation, though.
God, I hope this generation turns out to be a lot better than it's looking so far.
I view Thief 3's more action-inclined gameplay as being more than necessary for a mass-market acceptance. The problems with Thief 3 were the same as the problems that plagued Deus Ex: Invisible War - it was the tech. The team scaled back the freeform design, incorporated loading zones, not to mention the unstable frame rate and other misc. issues derived from the technology. The gameplay was relative solid by comparison.
I believe the term they're looking for is "consolification." That's when the publisher of a game series that is traditionally for the PC (and for good reason) decides to focus on consoles due to their much larger audience, forcing the developer to dumb down the game both for the LCD of said market and to fit within the limits of the console itself (especially the controls). People complained about this a lot when Thief 3, Deus Ex: Invisible War, and other bastardizations of PC franchises were being released a couple of years ago. Now-a-days that sort of thing has slackened off a lot, but we'll probably start hearing about it again when Halo 3 comes out.

I was curious to find out more about her modding project, so I asked Phoenix a few questions about what the process has been like for her....It's a girl? Oh, um. It's a girl. *ahem*
H-Hey there. So you like video games too, huh? M-Maybe I can show you my NES game c-collection. Heh heh heh!
Rob (What, where are you going? Please don't run away!)
I think it would be silly to expect people to pay per-game for old NES properties that are worth at most a buck each (when you take into account the lack of tangible media and the destruction of scarcity that the Virtual Console would cause). A subscription fee like Gametap uses would make a lot more sense.
I'd agree with you if this was the only time that this happened, but periods of relative sleepiness punctuated by sharp spikes in sales have made up the pattern of the video-game industry for many years now. Going by your logic, that means that we've been on the verge of a crash for a long time. Why hasn't it happened yet?

That's the argument given at Terra Nova, that the Horde is evil because it's made up of races that are generally thought of as evil. It's a crap argument in the case of WoW, though, since it requires you to ignore all of the backstory that Blizzard has set up in order to agree with it. Blizzard isn't just saying that orcs aren't evil and expecting you to agree; it actually shows that the orcs are no more evil than any other Warcraft race through the story.
Well, David Wong's a satirist so it makes sense that he'd be mocking all of the other Chicken Littles. But I'll admit that I didn't even realize that he wrote the last "sky is falling" article until you mentioned it.
It's gotten a bunch of people here to equate Columbine to 9/11, slavery, and the fucking Holocaust. Exaggerate much?
For the record, I'm intrigued by the idea of a Holocaust simulator. As long as you don't glorify the proceedings, it would be a great way to teach people about the banality of evil.
But I'll tell you what I don't want to see: Dynamic AI. Or at least the kind of dynamic AI we see now-a-days. I'm talking about those racing games where you're beating the hell out of the computer driver but in the last lap or so he ends up becoming completely inhuman (perhaps even "cheating") and beating you or coming close to it. Stop that shit, it's not any fun.
Considering how many people whined about that "cunnilingus on a hardwood floor" article, I'm shocked that there's so little bitching about this misleading and flamebaiting article summary.
Here's something funny: Ultima 9 isn't that bad either if you patch it.
But hey, keep saying that SC3 was so bad that its badness is self-evident and requires little to no explanation if you want. Doesn't keep me from enjoying both SC2 and SC3.
And the main reason the warp-engine thing was bad was because of the way getting fuel for it worked, which I think most people agree was an Accolade idea. Most of the game was long periods of waiting for your power plants to refill broken by spurts of actual gameplay. Thank God they implemented a game-speed option, otherwise SC3 would've been nearly unplayable.
Did you read the article? It makes it quite clear that Ness is referring to something else completely separate from the game that Toys for Bob is going to show at E3 this year. I even pointed this out when I submitted the article but Zonk edited that part out for some reason.
What Ness wants people to do is send him emails so he can prove to Activision that there is substantial interest for another Star Control game. If you can't see how that's newsworthy, then you're an idiot.
So did I. It's really a shame that some of the changes (which I like to blame Accolade for) made it a disappointing sequel to SC2, but it was still a good game that kept a lot of the humor that made the predecessor's storyline so great (and the voice acting didn't hurt). I think most people who've actually played SC3 hate it because they have an attachment to SC2 that is slightly unhealthy. That said, I'd definitely like to see the original developers make a new one, preferably not ignoring that SC3 ever existed (because, you know, that would be a pussy thing to do).

Adding violence to this definition of obscenity wouldn't be a bad idea, really. Of course, they forgot to add the most important part:
"Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value."
Most of the violent games I can think of at least have serious artistic value.

I wonder when people are going to get tired of predicting another video-game crash every time there's a dip in sales.

Speech is legal. Denial of service is not. It also makes for an idiotic rebuttal to the game. You can do better. (Well, maybe not you, but someone.)

The XBox and PS2 lacked any way to run pirated games without hardware modifications.

There was a lot of PR for the name "Revolution" too, and that was a good name.

Well, it's not really a dupe since it's a different article in the series. I get your joke, though, and it's astonishing how well it fits Slashdot.
