My old laptop is a toshiba 460CDT (think first gen pentium 166) w/t 80Mb RAM and a 2Gb HDD.
I had no trouble running FC1 on this puppy using XFCE. I used this laptop as my main desktop for about 7 months, until the HDD finally kick the bucket and I was forced to retire the machine.
Actually, I would re-word what you just said to "It doesn't matter until it affects a person of power."
Basically what I'm getting at is that it doesn't matter until someone in a position that has the power to force change is affected directly or indirectly.
As with your example with DOS, more than high-end users were being affected. The competition work out alternatives to use extra memory (EMS memory anyone ?), and it wasn't until MS realized that they were going to loose to the competition that they came out with XMS and High Memory, etc. scheme from DOS 5 onwards.
Windows Enhanced mode did not take effect for a long time. Lots of applications were still written and being written for DOS, even when Windows 3.1 was around. It wasn't until the release of Windows 95 that things began to change and people started to look towards Windows as a "real" application platform.
Internet Spyware (I-SPY) Prevention Act of 2004 - Amends the Federal criminal code to prohibit intentionally accessing a protected computer without authorization, or exceeding authorized access, by causing a computer program or code to be copied onto the protected computer, and intentionally using that program or code: (1) in furtherance of another Federal criminal offense; (2) to obtain or transmit personal information with intent to defraud or injure a person or cause damage to a protected computer; or (3) to impair the security protection of that computer.
Does this mean that having a software application that automatically updates itself with a newer version that has bugs that compromise the security of the computer and all information within can now be considered a criminal offence for the software developer ?
What's the guarantee that they won't go back on their decision, especially if the RIAA strong-arm the US government into imposing sanctions against Japan or other nations that follow suit ?
Call me skeptical, but until this actually becomes practiced for a while and spreads to other nations, I'm taking the news with a grain of salt.
What most people fail to realize is that Word and its office brethren, is better, not because of its glorified feature set but rather because of its interoprability between other Windows apps and between other Office components. By this I mean that I can use the Word/Excel/PPT/Outlook automation engines from within my own code or through VBA to do stuff like producing reports, precalculated spreadsheets, etc.
Until Open Source alternatives can provide this level of functionality, MS Office and its components, will still dominate the market.
Going after OEMs and MS to allow users to purchase a computer with or without the operating system of their choice.
I just recently bought a DELL laptop and had no option to buy the machine without Windows, and DELL isn't the only company. Gateway and HP (except for the nx5000) told me the same thing. I want to run Linux, my flavour of Linux, why do I need to pay for a Windows licence when all I'm going to do is re-build the machine with Fedora Core ? - Also what if I already had a Windows Licence from a previous computer that I'm trashing. Why can that not be transfered over to this new machine ?
What if someone with these mods punches someone else on a street? Is it assault with deadly weapon (like isn't this the case when you have a black belt and you know your karate can be lethal, or is this an urban legend?) Do law books need to change on this too?
What about someone who has large hands or feet by birth ? - How could you tell the difference ?
The Audio Home Recording Act gives me the right to make backups of my music, to make compilations of my music, and to share those compilations with as many friends as I'd like, as long as I don't charge anything
IANAL, but sharing music, regardless of charging anything or not is still a copyright violation. you are, however, permitted to make backups of my music
Put one of these on each of the remaining space shuttles so taht they can perform tile observation/repair, etc. when necessary without risking any lives.
"In fact, the DMCA is not designed to prevent the creation of new methods of locking content, and explicitly allows the creation of interoperable software."
Does this mean that if Real wins their case, we have a HUGE loophole in the DMCA, whereby we'd be allowed to reverse engineer DRM, if the content is re-encoded with your own DRM ? - I wonder how the RIAA and MPAA will feel about this. Sucks to be them I guess!
If you want to teach the RIAA, MPAA and their minions a lesson all yousimply have to do is:
1. Stop buying music/movies produced by the RIAA or MPAA, any artist related to the above
2. Make it publicly known why it is that you are not purchasing their products - ie. talk with newspapers and other media outlets explaining why. This way the RIAA, etc. will have a tougher time playing the piracy card
3. Send a letter to your local senator explaining why you are against bills such as this one and others, like the broadcast flag, etc.
If enought people do atleast steps 1 and 2, others in the general community will start listening and hopfully the **AA's tackticks will backfire on themselves.
And yes, I am doing as I preach... I have already taken step 1, I haven't bought a CD or downloaded music for over a year now and honestly I don't really miss much. If I really want to hear the latest music (very rarely), I will turn on my radio and listen for a while.
Why does a mission to repair the HST cost so much ? - I mean if companies like Scaled Composites can fly a mission into near space for around $20,000,000 why does a mission to HST have to cost almost 20 times that ?
Kinda, but I believe it was in regards to the Pentium Pro/ Pentium II architectures. If memory serves me correct, Intel "stole" IP from DEC's Alpha processor for the PPro and PII architectures. The suite was settled out of court using cross licencing, etc.

Instead of spending resources porting existing games, why not spend resources on developing/supporting Open Source game development ?

In this scenario, I'm sure that speeding is but one of the many laws this person violated.
Call me skeptical, but until this actually becomes practiced for a while and spreads to other nations, I'm taking the news with a grain of salt.
I really don't see what all the fuss is about.
Until Open Source alternatives can provide this level of functionality, MS Office and its components, will still dominate the market.
Isn't this how all their software works ?

Yeah and congress also stated that we have the right to "fair use" of copyrighted works, but we all know where that's going!
A true 64-bit process has more than just microcode going for it. What about the bus ? - You can't just update the bus size by updating the microcode!
No actually they have those alarm clocks that make soothing ocean noises, etc.

Seriously, has anyone considered the possibility that the only intelligent life-forms in the universe maybe humans in past, present and future form ?

Couldn't resist laughing when I read this quote.

P2P software is really a medium for sharing information, which to me would imply that it would be covered by the first ammendment.
They have clocks that make ocean noises. Its quite relaxing actually.
