Cell phones are nice but I would not jump to conclusion of where the "central point" of convergance will be. Its the product ideas you havent thought of that end up taking the market by storm. A friend of mine heard rumors on IRC about the iPod saying "imagine a pack of cigarettes, now imagine your music collection". He told me about this and I asked: "so are we going to start smoking our music?"

  5. Opening Solaris? on Sun Rays For Linux · · Score: 1

We have read about the possible opening of the Solaris operating system. Opening up some of the technology involved is a nice step but falls short in my eyes. I think that sun should come out with a new open version of Solaris that is fully compatible with the current version but integrates some flavor of BSD. (I am personally favorable to UNIX) Just a thought...

  6. Paying for unix? on Can GNU Ever Be Unix? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Free BSD as the name suggests IS free. Unix is not a valad trademark beacause beacause of its many forks and variations it has become a generic term. IMHO I think the people at SCO and Sony (with its joke of a digital music player) fell off the stupid tree and hit every branch on the way down. Protecting your copyrights has become difficult these days. In a world of convergance, reverse engineering and "hey that was my idea" tactics A review of copyright laws and procedures needs to take place. If we come together and decide on open and fair standards that make things work. Things are going to change, biusness models that were viable before will no longer work. But its time to evolve.

  7. Robot OCR on Marian The Robot Librarian · · Score: 1

Good point about digitizing, you could unleash a team of wifi enabled autonomous robots into a library and come back a few days later and everything would be digitized, saved and put back where it was found. The CIA should also develop this technology to allow them to covertley and remotley scan sensitive meterials and put them back exactly as there were found and leave little to no evidice behind.

I see this as unlikley. Google has technology so advanced it is surrounded by "top secret" style secrecy. In other words we have no idea what Google is working on. What we do know is it is always something revolutionary and suprising. Only time will tell but it is reasonable to expect that Google is already working on the next big thing and is more likley than not to continue to be on the razor edge of technology
