  5. Cold weather hardware. on Running a Server at Freezing Temperatures? · · Score: 1

First of all I think it isn't the best idea to insulate a computer compartment. Computers generate a fair amount of heat and tolerate cold quite well. Even a bit of condensation will not harm them unless it causes a short. I think it would be more practical to make sure that the hard drives you are using are rated for those temps. But >0 Celsius isn't really all that cold. I would imagine that you can get away with just heating the hard disks or just leaving them running to keep them warm. Most of the effects in this terrifying scenario begin to occur at much lower temps and the quick move from cold to hot.

Companies like Vonage should set up a system to combat this problem before it even becomes one. I am not quite sure how exactly it works but I would imagine that voice messages get delivered through a server owned by the VOIP provider. All that is necessary to prevent others from leaving messages or calling you is a simple D/H signature put on the messages by a reputable phone company or service provider. The messages or calls without this signature get thrown into the celestial bit bucket by your VOIP router. Lets nip this one in the but before it becomes the problem. Shouldn't be to difficult given that you are paying for a service that is controlled by your service provider.

  24. Redundant systems are more vulnerable? on NIST Studies Virus, DDoS Effect On Grids · · Score: 1

This hypothesis seems to go against logic but maybe it holds some water until things change a little. When you have one very good point of control to access to the system where is the difference then? Also when distributed systems use multiple locations as well as multiple configurations doesn't this create a more survivable system? The laws of nature clearly say that biodiversity is directly linked to an ecosystem's success. An attack or technical problem can not effect every part of a diverse system in the same way. Lately I have been comparing the laws of nature to the laws of technology and I have come to he simple conclusion that since computer systems are governed by the same laws it is inherent that the laws apply equally to there functioning parameters and design. This area of convergence between the laws of nature and computing is to interesting to ignore. Software could be developed by writing an ancestor program and creating random variations that are 'naturally selected' by simulated use and disruption of the population of software being tested, evolving software basically.
