"Actually 2000 (and more so 3-4000 years ago) you could have gone around talking about God and Judaism and people would have responded the same way.. maybe the reason judaism and christianity have stood the test of time is that there is really something to them and these other "false gods" have dropped to the wayside..."
There are a few logical fallacies in that line of thinking.
"They have a responsability to stop any negative effects that gaming may have in society."
May have.
What does that mean exactly? I'm not trying to come at you from some elitest prick, how can I be wrong, type of attitude, but are you suggested we have to regulate things because of what may happen?
I can buy alcohol, yet I might drive drunk and run someone over. I can buy a gun, yet I might shoot someone in a violent crime.
I agree that, based on age and maturity levels, certain things are more/less appropriate for a given individual.
However, according to an FBI report (http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel00/school.htm) on school shootings, they said the following about video games: "The student spends inordinate amounts of time playing video games with violent themes, and seems more interested in the violent images than in the game itself."
So it would seem that even the FBI feels that the violent images are the interest of potential school shooters/psychopaths - and those could be obtained hundreds of different ways.
Little Johnny, if not already pre-disposed to this behavior, is not going to run amuck because he shot someone down in GTA. Although I do agree, it's still probably not appropriate for him to play...
I agree - on the surface, this is a righteous "fuck you" to Mr. J.T., however when you think about it, it's only helping his cause.
In the latest issue of PC gamer there is an article that compares statistics from the FBI on youth crime rates to GTA releases. Turns out, it's been on the decline for a while and is currently at all time lows. GTA et al. has had no effect on youth crime. My only problem with this comparison is that the stats from the FBI are a few years out of date...so maybe there has been a huge uprising...but I doubt it.
It would have been just as easy for R* to create an elaborate site with these kinds of comparisons and studies.
Although, on the flip-side, I can see people dismissing it since the info isn't from an unbiased source.
mp3's dude.
internet porn was only cool when you were dl'ing it on a 2400 baud modem...watching it appear line by freakin line.
now *anyone* can get it....meh.
Now, lets take a trip back to reality. Guys, in general, are attracted to a woman for some initial reason. It could be breasts, eyes, power, ass, legs, height, whatever. It is less likely that a guy is first attracted to a woman because of her uber coding skillz.
Example: You're at some social gathering. You look across the room and see X and are immediately attracted. If you're lucky, the person that has X is interested in the Y you offer and a conversation starts. If you're really lucky, you can even relate on some mental level.
Except for the internet, people are just not attracted to people (initially) for their personality.
While I don't know if bragging about your salary and oodles of disposable income is going to help your point.....you do raise a good point.
$1K is *nothing* to spend on a nice PC for gaming. Besides, most people who build PC's have frankensystems where some parts make it into ver 2.0, while others are discarded / sold.
I have no idea what my current system "cost" because over 2 years time, it's morphed and mutated its way into its current state.
Am I the odd guy out? Or do people really up and buy entirely new systems every few years?
With just about every PC game, you can delete (or rename) the movie files and prevent them from loading. This is true for EA games because I did it for Battlefield 2 - so click the button and boom - right to the main menu.
"Meanwhile I'm enjoying the new 2.0 firmware update"
Ugh, it's supposed to be a game console. I get excited with new firmware and drivers for my pc, not for consoles. If they do upgrade, it should be so transparent that the user doesn't even know it happened.
First I thought you were kidding. Then I stopped laughing.
" Any real scientists are only interested in finding what is objectively true and real, and since real belief in objective truth requires the existence of God (whether or not one chooses to live in accordance with His wishes), then atheism and science are incompatible. This was well understood several hundred years ago at the height of scientific progress when theology was known as "Queen of the Sciences". Theology was not paced above all other sciences because of church domination, but because it is a logical necessity, and people then were smart enough to realize it and intellectually honest enough to acknowledge it."
Wow. I'm sure the church was very interested in people exploring the wonders of science so they could learn how things work rather than relying on the ole "cuz god made it that way" routine.
Just because we don't understand it now, doesn't mean we won't someday. There is no need to insert god into the reason for all that is unknown.
you're both right. However, you have the balls to admit that America isn't so bad after all. So what if Joe Sixpack wants to sit around and watch survivor - what should he be doing - cold fusion experiments?
What's Piere Beaujolais doing? Writing a new opera? no. he is sitting around like anyone else.
Is America perfect? no. But guess what, I'm American, and I like France. Yep. That's right. And I've travelled to more countries than I can remember.
It's sad when I agree with Shawn fucking Hannity when I heard him say that we (as Americans) have lost our resolve after 9/11. It seems trendy again to be unpatriotic.
Do you think the system design and software for the $30K system fell out of the sky?
Do you think that company is just planning on selling that one model with no plans of future revisions?
If they make $29K profit, which they don't because you are assuming the employees are donating thier time and effort into selling and manufacturing them, then so what. It's obviously worth $30K because someone paid that much money for one.
"I used to be a very angry person, but due to an unusual epiphany 3 years ago, I've learned to deal with it. But what this experience taught me is that there are a LOT of angry people in this country."
If you don't mind, please elaborate - this sounds interesting.
"Because that verbal blowjob you just gave Nintendo looked messy. You take a lot on faith"
And more on his chin.
I agree with the original poster though - the Revolution's controller better be damn impressive. I think it will be...but it's more likely be something obvious and cleverly implemented.
At least N has us talking about some unknown invention that improves gaming than just a system with the most biggest gigasonicflops processor... I find that far more interesting.
You know the games will be rated E. There will be no Hot Coffee mod to have Mario bang the princess.
More importantly, if youre developing a new game, it's very difficult to introduce it to the market.
Instead of taking a big risk, you take the game you made, and slap in Mario - now you have the same game + a recognizable lead character and a 20+ year backstory that can easily be incorporated.
Not to mention that Mario games are almost always fun to play.
"I feel Revolution's mysterious hype is going to explode"
It has that segway vibe to me. Lots of hype for a 'whatever' product. I think whatever the mystery is, it will turn out to be something both obvious and clever - but not revolutionary.
And I'm totally a N fanboy...
"Casual" downloading of shared content is hard, especially if you want decent quality. Convenience means a lot to people. There are lots of lazy individuals with plenty of money, and they'll happily give you a little money if you do some work for them. And figuring out a decent download counts as work."
I agree with everything you said except for this.
Time = money. That time might be your time spent relaxing or your time spent earning more money. Some people only want to slack off and others only want to work - most people have a balance. How is it lazy to pay someone to work for you? All you really did was purchase the time you didn't have to spend figuring something out. Think "$50 card installation" services - etc.
Also, I'm curious - what happened to your old roommate?:)
If Rockstar wants to continue making games that cause controversy they should look at Valve.
No need for ratings if you distribute the game yourself...
I would think Rockstar, with some minimal advertising, could pull this off. They have enough brand recognition to pull it off...although I suppose this would make them just a PC game maker...which wouldn't be very good for their profit margin.
Does the ps2 have a "seal of approval" or whatever for their games? Or can anyone release something? Or is it more a licensing thing?
" Cross-party developers don't want to be in a situation where they have to redesign games for release on your system because you've insisted on using a new control system, just because it fit what you wanted to do with a few first party games. Tell them they've got to do that and they just won't bother with you. By all means, bring out your new controller, but make it very clear, right now, that the Revolution will also ship with a dualshock-alike. Treat your third parties right and some of them will come back to you."
This is the one part of your letter that I agree with. You're controller idea will, no doubt, be covered by any number of 3rd party companies. However, Nindendo's decision to not have HD ability in the system, while the competition does, effectively means that 3rd party games will *never* look as good as they will on the other consoles. (yes yes, gameplay, blah blah, I agree - but why intentionally drop HD support!?)
Will I buy a Revolution - yes. Will I buy 3rd party, cross-platform, games - probably not. A better question might be: will there be 3rd party, cross-platform, titles for the Revolution?
"Actually 2000 (and more so 3-4000 years ago) you could have gone around talking about God and Judaism and people would have responded the same way.. maybe the reason judaism and christianity have stood the test of time is that there is really something to them and these other "false gods" have dropped to the wayside..."

Somehow I really doubt that CS players are leaving their PC's to play Halo on a console.
There are probably more people playing CS right now than there are XBox live subscribers.

Yeah, I'm sure this gives a company the right to do anything to its employees."
Any idea how EA scores when it comes to salary? I mean, something is keeping these abused code monkies in thier cubes...

I was going to respond and say - well, how come the 10 ten lists in Japan are full of Nintendo games - but then I did some searching...
They are only half-full...
