Hehe indeed. If you find a post on the ubuntu forums (google it) by me, BLTicklemonster, then look at my sig, there are shown two different ways to easily make .deb files install by double clicking them. Besides, it's as easy as copying and pasting those lines into a terminal anyway, is it not? How hard is that?

I have tried installing linux for years, and never had the time or patience to get past "gee, look, now what?" Ubuntu installed and had me on a desktop without any inane gibberish commands at all ever. Once on the desktop, I had the tool I had wanted with every distro I had tried; ACCESS TO THE INTERNET. Yes, right off the bat, I was online asking questions, and reading up on how to get the most out of Ubuntu.

You can't beat that for a linux distro (at least I haven't ever been able to) And as for Arnie's 1337 speak, so what, the dude's eccentric.

As for "don't use it", bullowny. (Hope arnie would be proud of my butchering) Automatix installs and puts things right back where they were to begin with; the user is in control.

Ubuntu is by far the easiest linux distro I have ever used, and automatix makes it even easier for people like me to get the most out of the experience. Imho, it is the best thing Ubuntu has going for it other than Ubuntu itself.

And the community support on the forums (okay, here's the link: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/index.php ) is the best there is. Plenty of help for anyone and everyone. Help, encouragement - you can't beat it. I can't wait for Dapper to come out to see how it looks and works. (yes, if you know me, I am presently not using ubuntu, because I am working on a project for Unreal Tournament which requires me to be able to map and script, which I can't readily do in ubuntu precisely the way I need to, though with vmware I can almost get what I want, I find that uscript doesn't compile in xp run in vmware in ubuntu as it does on pure xp. But I am going back one day. I love ubuntu, and am looking forward to the day when I can kick the windows out and have Ubuntu as my only OS)

I keep hearing people say America is fascist, but I just don't see it. We don't follow a philosophy or system of government that is marked by stringent social and economic control. We do have a strong government, and yes, the left keeps trying to centralize it, but it's not headed by a dictator, and the only belligerance is antinationalism coming from left wing whackos.

Against the backdrop of a war where there are people who are admittedly trying to end our way of life, the things the current administration has done are tolerable. Were we not at war, if everything was a peachy keen as the left would have us believe, and Bush were wiretapping people, then yes, it would be intolerable, and imho should have legal actions taken against it.

Just my two cents on the matter.

If I'm not mistaken, www.upc.com will be able to give you a number to call in your area in the US for locates.

I'm responsible for the utility locates where I work, and I can tell you it's a pain in the butt. The main driver behind it all was fiber optics and lawyers all along, imho. The only thing that ought to be undergound imo is water/sewer and gas, if it uses wires, it need to be hung from poles like GOD intened it to be. ;) lol

That said, the biggest problem is locating the darned things in the first place so a contractor knows where they are. No, actually, and I speak from experience, the biggest problem we've seen is lazy contractors for the phone company who will bury the phone lines DIRECTLY ON TOP OF ANOTHER UTILITY BECAUSE THE GROUND IS SOFTER because it's already been disturbed. Nothing like calling in 72 hour locates to find that the fiber optics run right on top of the water mains... or worse, that they missed locating the darned things by 10 feet, or they aren't located at all. I have a standing request with our crews that if they ever come up on a fiber optic cable that is mislocated, to please notify me so I can come out with a chainsaw and a meat grinder and take 100 feet of the line and make mincemeat (mincefiber?) out of it and send it to the phone company in a baggie.

No, I won't do that, but after all the lawsuits we've been through when the phone company is at fault, it's tempting.

There needs to be a national standard for laying fiber optic cables whereas they are not allowed within 20 feet running parallel to any other utility, and if they cross, they are to be encased in concrete of kevlar or steel conduit. Anybody stupid enough to put something that delicate underground ought to have their heads examined in the first place, if you ask me. ...and then they complain when it gets hit. Underground excavation is not as easy as you may think, and things are going to get hit, no matter how careful you are. Ground penetrating radar for locating is a joke in rocky soil, pipe horns pick up just about anything, and will give false readings and place you precisely in the center of two lines sometimes no matter how good you are. I used to bury phone drops for Bell South, and when we'd show up for a dig, the first thing I'd do as crew leader is tell the crew to verify locates with a pipe horn, and then I'd dowse afterwards.Accuracy for pipe horns: abismal. Accuracy for dowsing: 100 percent. Kreskin can kiss my bootay, dowsing in the hands of a capable person is far more accurate than pipe horns. How's it work? Who knows, and who cares? All I know is it will find water lines, sewer lines, phone lines, even gas lines that are improperly buried (no wire running with them for pipe horns to pick up). I've not once had a doubter that I showed how to do it come away not totally amazed that it actually works.

But the main thing is, you have to be careful, and pot hole frequently. Have a man watch when you use a backhoe, and if the ground around the bucket pulls, have him stop immediately, and pull out and go in to verify as to whether you are pulling a root, gas main, or mislocated fiber optic. If it's a root, no problem, if it's a gas line, well, you probably just pulled it loose somewhere down the line, and you need fire, and gas company reps immediately. If it's mislocated fiber optic, shut down, move, call me, and let me have some fun with my chainsaw and meat grinder, please!

If I were to download a song illegally in mp3 format, then what's the big deal? To me, the product that the artists put out for sale are far superior to mp3s, so what I have can hardly be considered "their product" now can it? I don't like country music, and am not an apologist for the old south, but that is one killer album with some really pretty music on it. But if I had a chance to get an mp3 of it, I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat, and still buy the cd if I found it later. I set it up, and honestly, XP runs faster this way than it ever did on a regular install. No, I can't install stuff like video drivers I need, but the drivers that install with XP work well enough to run the unreal editor. I wonder if someone could test XP in VMware in Ubuntu against XP on a hard drive and see what kind of difference there is. I sure seems like XP is way faster than it ever was.

Shame to have to set up like this just to run unreal editor, though. Oh, for you gamers out there, UT runs so much smoother and faster in Ubuntu, it's not funny. When I downloaded the live cd of Hoary I was impressed with it enough to download the install iso and put it on a spare hard drive and fire it up. It actually set up my network automatically BEFORE getting to the desktop, and began upgrading itself right there... BEFORE it even finished installing. I was amazed.

Yes, it's different, and sure there may be a slight learning curve (if you are competent in Windows, you will find this to be pretty intuitive. YOu probably won't get lost easily), but I am totally sold on this. Streaming audio just like Winamp, Dvd player, cd burner you name it, it's got it, or can get it. Bingo. Good point. I like the theory of evolution, it makes great sense to me, but I only see it for what it is, a theory. Many people confuse adaptation/evolution with the evolution of one distinct species into another. Yes, birds on the Galapagos Islands adapted, but they didn't evolve from turtles or the like. Did we evolve from apes? In my opinion, if anything, there is the distinct possibility that we adapted to our environment, if anything, and ended up where we are now.

On the other hand, I believe in the distinct possiblity that there was something along the lines of a creator involved in everything. How likely is it that some primordial ooze evolved into everything we see today? Have we put a human face on this creator to make it easier to identify with it? Possibly. Have religious leaders been dishonest with people oftimes in order to push a political agenda? Possibly. But neither of these would mean that a creator didn't exist, it would only show humans for what humans are; jerks from the word go.

I can't prove my views, and people with opposing views can't prove thiers, so we both should be allowed equal time. Tis the only fair way to be.
