3. Microsoft has already sold them off, and made a huge profit doing so.
Care to provide a link or something? For years I wasn'r able to find anything showing MS sold those shares. Contrary I think they were traded for voting stock.
The quoted sentence is a footnote to an item called "Memory" filed under "Build-to-Order Options". And this Build-to-Order Option is only available at the Apple Store or any Apple Authorized Service Provider. This doesn't have anything to do with what you do with your Mac mini at home.
(And not to play with what I wrote in the last line just shows how much I have grown as a person...)
+5 Insightful my ass. The box is not meant for cable. The T in DVB-T stands for "terrestrial". So this is meant for the new TV standard that's replacing the traditional air wave TV.
Asking slashdot: Which provider do you think does the best effort to filter/fight spam and uses the most state of the art techniques for that? The german freemailer GMX I use now is good, but I wonder if others do better. And I wouldn't mind paying for never receiving spam again. Is Apple.mac email service any good? I have a Mac and sure could make use of some of the other features they offer...
Get a quiet hard disk and the whole thing will make almost no noise, as the CRT iMacs are convection cooled. A 400 Mhz one is more than enough for the purpose by the way...

Meh, I think I originally heard that factoid from some Star Wars Special Addition Making Of special, so it's entirely possible that it was Lucas revising history again.
This is entirely possible. Sorry if I came across somewhat impolite, but it gives me the screeps experiencing a new kinda urban myth being spread on the web:)
He claimed in an interview about that scene that he originally wanted to do some sort of special effect to make the guy there be some sort of space alien but couldn't pull it off.
Sounds like an aged director suffering of delusions. Check: George Lucas.
Maybe the interview is on the special discs? I don't know, because I don't actually care enough about Star Wars to buy the new DVD set.
I plan to rent them to have a look at the new making of. Still I would like to have the making of from the seventies...
That scene really was supposed to be in the original movie, though. They just didn't have the technology at the time to pull it off.
(The original idea, I think, was to replace the actor standing in for Jabba with a puppet shot on a blue screen.)
I call crap. If they wanted to replace the fat guy in fur with a puppet in 1976/1977 they would have had to do the scene with green/blue-screen or rear projection. (Watch the Rancor scene in RotJ) In 1977 there would have been absolutely no way to replace that actor in that scene as it was shot. (With all the interacting with and walking behind Harrison Ford) And why on earth would there be need for the fur costume?
No, that fur guy was planned as Jabba. Time constraints called for cuts and a Jabba that doesn't show up is somewhat more sinister anyway. Hitchcock taught us that what isn't shown in movies can be the most menacing.
However, after it became apparent that they couldn't do that scene with current technology, they moved all the information learned in that scene to the scene with Greedo.
So, yes, the scene is totally redundant and looked wrong (because it was originally designed around a different Jabba) as shot. This is why the 1997 version had Han Solo step on Jabbas tail - Harrison Ford walked around the stand-in in the original shot, before they really knew what Jabba would look like.
If they really had planned to replace the irish fur guy they would have needed to film Han (foreground), Jabba (middle) and the Falcon (background) seperately. Which they didn't. Which proves they never wanted to replace the irish fur model. And it would have looked shitty anyway. And it still wouldn't make sense to give a standin a costume.
This is wrong. They even had costumes made and sets build already. As well as actors casted. They reused some stuff for the motion picture. Decker was meant as would-be-replacement for Kirk if Shatner got too expensive and the actor who played Commander Branch in the movie was supposed to be a vulcan replacement for Spock as Nimoy had no interst in another TV-series. Lieutenant Ilia was also written for the series and later kinda reintroduced as Diana Troy. A lot of the concepts for phase II made it into Next Generation anyway.
I would like to do the same with my pot plants on my patio. I always forget to water them. I imagine sensors in the pots attached to a computer, so it "knows" if the plants need water and then opens a tap on a water hose. And I reaIly mean plants in flowerpots. Although, speaking of pot, I wonder if there are such systems for cannabis growers... Of course the system has to run on an old Mac or Sun Workstation or any other old hardware that's small and looks kinda cool at the kitchen window.
Sure, they picked some huge thing, these computers have been around for ages,
Ages? I can't remember a TFT all-in-one older than four years.

Huh. These are quite expensive. Maybe I'm not the only one who thought that, their website is not very informative... But luckily I found these side- and rear-views of the machine:

... uhhmmm... cough.... Yeah. Almost. Almost like the new iMac. If I didn't know it was the Gateway site, I would have thought: "Hey this must be the Apple store!" This picture is best to get the pure elegance of the design:
I think it's very funny how this was moded up to a 5 when people were reading the comment, then over time, as people returned, trickle by trickle, it got modded down..

Por ejemplo, these all-in-ones have been around for a few years. They have also universally sucked. We got a chance to demo two models (one from Omnitech now MPC and another from Gateway) back in June. Each one was nearly 40 pounds. They were *beasts*.
For everyone to compare here are pics of an iMac G5 and a Sony Vaio all-in-one:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind is a good example of this. There are at least 3 versions out. The original big screen version I don't think they ever released to the home market.
Yes they did. I saw at least a for rent VHS. But this wasn't available for at least 10 years now.
I wonder if there ever was a LaserDisc of the original release...

So there are two possible solutions:
Nope, try again: "the proprietary content will be video encoded in AVC H.264, which will be supported first in OS X 10.4" (from the article)
"Look at the amd and intel benchmarks for video."
Well, Apple doesn't use any of those architectures ...
You can daisychain FireWire, you know.

You are aware that anybody could put that in there? I still see no proof. Still waiting for someone to post a link to some SEC filing or whatever.
Do you have any source for your claim? I couldn't find proof for MS selling that Apple stock.

I'm seriously interested in any source for your claim. I never found proof for MS selling that stock.

Why use a costume for a stand-in who is supposed to replaced by some speacial effect gimmick?
