  1. I keep a Yosemite partition my MacBook Pro to run camera control software on my telescope. It won't run on El Cap and newer and newer versions of the camera control software dropped support for my perfectly good camera. Catch 22.

  2. Sounds Reasonable on New Study Claims That the 'Black Death' Was Spread By Humans, Not Rats (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

  3. While the comet mission is certainly worthy, Titan is is the most Earth-like body in the solar system, except for temperature. It has a thick atmosphere of mostly nitrogen. It has a complex "hydrological" cycle with methane as the analog to water. There are surface lakes, rivers, and seas of liquid methane and ethane. The Cassini-Huygens mission detected extremely complex hydrocarbons in the atmosphere. All of this makes Titan a really interesting place to look for life. If it's there, it will likely be Very Different from life as we know it.

  4. Remember this is Comcast on PSA: Comcast Doesn't Really Support Net Neutrality (slate.com) · · Score: 3
My experience with Comcast included the following:
    • They delivered slower service thanI paid for unless I repeatedly called to complain
    • Their service model appeared to be based on hatred of their customers.
    • Connectivity was unreliable.

So yes, they are lying. What did you expect?

Agreed. He was very well known back when he was writing. I devoured his stuff back in the early sixties when I was in junior high. The list of his works in Wikipedia is by no means complete.

  6. These guys were a lock for the prize as soon as their paper was published. The only question was in which year would it be awarded. Awesome work.

  7. I have no explanation, but I've noticed that this happens every year.

  8. Back in the early 70s when I was a grad student in biology, there was a lot of LSD around; also psilocybin, mescaline, and of course pot. Many of us used them as recreational drugs. It was fun, but it sure as hell didn't get your thesis written or your research done, even. For that you needed coffee. The few who took the "insights" of those trips seriously wound up going down the rabbit hole of "deep ecology" or some other bullshit.

It's worth noting that except for the title two words, "Danke Schön", Newton sang the song in English. I too hope that was tongue in cheek.

The wave front of the first broadcast of Wayne Newton's "Danke Schoen" is now 54 light years from Earth. The alien extermination fleet is probably already on its way.

I do! Some of my friends and family are in countries without the freedom of speech protections of the United States and the United Kingdom. ThoughtCrime can get you in a lot of trouble in large parts of the world.

  18. Seconding pecosdave here. I used Jawbone earpieces for years and they were great. They even gave acceptable performance in my sports car with the top down. They last one I bought two years ago was a piece shit, however. It was allegedly the sam model as the one i lost, but it had a reduced feature set, the audio sucked, and the bluetooth connectivity was troublesome. Frustration pushed me to be an early adopter of AirPods, which are greatly superior to Jawbone. They were the top of the heap in their market niche, but they tried to jump into a different segment and neglected their core business success. The end was inevitable.
