  2. Well, to be pickey... on Palm Changing OS Strategy · · Score: 2, Insightful

having preemptive multitasking, or multitasking period is NOT a requirement for being an OS. Neither is having memory protection. All an OS has to do control (allow) execution of programs and *may* provide various services such as accessing hardware. Now, this doens't mean that an OS without multitasking or memory space protection is any "good", but it is still an OS.

  3. I heard you knock... on "Port Knocking" For Added Security · · Score: 1
I can't think of any easy ways you could get around a system using this security method - let alone even know that a system is implimenting it.

I can... you packet-sniff while someone's going through their knock and just follow the port sequence. Once you get the magic knock, you're once step closer to getting through the door. Now with hundreds of people connecting at once, you'll just have to organize your packet-sniffing log by source, port, and time (just to make sure you do it fast enough). This just gives the script kiddies something else to look for with their scripts.

  5. Re:Quality of "fancy" features on Plain Cell Phones Fading Away? · · Score: 1

As an employee of a cell phone company, I can tell you that many of the camera phones coming out now have a CCD and the percentage will increase. With this increase will come camera phones capable of > 1 Megapixel images. As for the lenses, I don't think anyone's found a good lense that will fit into the 1/4th the width of a phone (since most go into "clamshell" phones) and still be cheap enough to make it into the bill of materials, but I'm sure it's on the way. Besides most of the distortion you're seeing is due to the low-quality CMOS's being used. You have to start somewhere, and IIRC, the first digital cameras weren't that great either.

"Make sure that your expectations are appropriate to what a product is marketing,"

Every company I've heard of with poor customer service has an attitude similar to the one reflected in this statement. When people start moving to a "we know what you want better than you do" or a "you need to expect the right things" instead of a "tell us what you want" or "what do you want to make this product better," then the customer is put-off, because you're not catering to the customer's needs. Let's face it, in a capitalist society the customer is always right, and if you don't think so, you'll find your sales lagging.

Since most users are using Microsoft products, and Microsoft seems to be keen at using lots of memory and cpu cycles where sometimes not necessary, they seem to be handling the issue of forcing people into a new upgrade cycle quite well. For many of us gamers, new titles like ut2 and the coming Doom III are forcing the upgrades. Given this, I don't think that PCI Express will create more "upgrade pressure" than many people already feel.

For that matter, as long as we're using a CRT or any of the current LCD or Plasma displays, we could break open the box to get to the signal. Then, their P.R. department had to be dumb enough to say, "Hey, this wont affect our image THAT much, so go ahead." Then, their lawyers had to be dumb enough to believe someone who said, "Well, we'll figure out what code to say is ours if it comes-up, but we wont worry about that now" AND they went ahead with this. Is there NO sane person with a voice in this company saying, "Hey, this is the biggest dumbass idea EVER... including that moronic Microsoft Bob shit! This is WORSE!" It's amazing that this company's dumbshit filters have let this happen.
