I have fluorescent lights that use pretty much exactly the same amount of power to output 100W equivalent of light. And those bulbs cost not much more than a buck a piece. What exactly does these provide to me for $30?
Oppression always shows its strongest form on children. There is an enormous amount of power in the hands of the parents.
Parents do things to children that would be unconscionable on ordinary citizens, or even the worst criminals.
Think about it. Think of the uproar that would occur if the government:
- Drugged undesirables with adult 'ritalin'. - Tracked our movements to make sure we were in the right place at the right time. - Removed the right to free speech like they do at schools. (even though the supreme court ruled that the right to free speech did not end when students and teachers entered the school doors)
He probably signed a document that says "everything that you create here, have created in the past, or will ever create belongs to the Company". It was probably in the fine print of the document he signed to get his ID badge so that he could get into the building.
I don't think the majority of posters here realize how stressful a major data loss can be, especially if the person calling is responsible in some way for the data.
Lets say that you admin a set of servers for a site of 1000 people and you have a major data catastrophe. If you are calling a data storage/recovery firm like Iron Mountain/Arcus to get a copy of your latest off-site duplicate backups.
If the failure has gotten to this point, it means that your on-site backups have failed or have been destroyed and that you may have several Terabytes of data to recover, since you can afford the services of a company like this.
Think about this: - You are the one being paid to keep the systems up and available and this isn't happening. - There are around 1000 people that will not be able to work until the data is restored and brought on-line. This can be days or even weeks depending on the size of the failure.
So now, not only are you possibly going to lose your job, but there is a possibility of many more people losing thier only source of income. Its frightening. The failure may have been something you could have prevented. It may have even precipitated from some your actions. (oops, I didn't mean 'rm -rf/'... or oops, I forgot that I left my coffee on top of the EMC)
It would be great if they could combine this system with a traffic monitoring system. I would rather know the traffic 20 minutes in advance. It would be great if my navigation system would tell me, "take these back roads, you dont want to see whats coming ahead..." or "you might as well stay home for an extra 1/2 hour..."
From the point of a single product, they have a good point. Eventually, the programmer will/might realize that he could have written the same program for Windows, and have made himself a living writing programs (outside of the rat race, might I add)
Of all the things to be alarmist about... the Segway??
I guess it is an example of people being afraid of new things.
Does this spell the end of the Segway? This has probably killed off the Segway's #1 market. I feel sorry for all those still-employed techies in San Francisco that pre-ordered theirs on Amazon.
I hope they are as sharp and readable as the current LCD screens. One great advantage to LCD screens is that they are significantly easier on the eyes than CRT monitors.
If this new technology is cheaper or has some other substantial improvement over LCDs, most manufacturers may stop selling LCD monitors or laptops using LCD screens. Those of us that look for easy to read screens may lose out.
Karma this down if you must, but this is a serious question:
Why do we want to spend that much money on going to another planet? Is there that much more we can learn by sending people there? There is probably more useful information to be learned by studing physics and space here from earth, don't you think?
I think being other-user friendly is a great idea. There are tons of possible ways to improve the phones:
The perfect phone would: - Adjust the volume of the ringer depending on the ambient volume of the room. - ONLY Vibrate if it is being worn. - Maybe through a motion sensor or via the use of the clip. - AUTOMATICALLY not ring if in certain types of venues (movies, etc) This would be possible with a simple 802.11 signal. - Notify the user if he is talking too loudly (but, preferrably without a shock) - NOT ring when in a roomful of people with their own phones. - Easily transfer calls to a nearby landline.
Java is just the buzzword that almost all IT managers think that their applicants should have.
I have seen dozens of job postings for positions like System Administrator and Database Administrator that had NOTHING to do with Java, and yet, somehow, Java finds its way onto the list of requirements. I've seen several of my managers post job openings requesting Java experience while our department did absolutely no Java work whatsoever.
Ive found that Everything 2 seems to be missing a LOT of nodes that would be easily found on google. What do you think if all the missing nodes in Everything 2 automatically pulled up the Google "I'm feeling lucky" link?
I believe it's right for experiments to be done on month old foetuses, but I don't think it's right to do the same thing on one that could live if born prematurely....
What about doing medical experiments on your arm or groin? Neither could live if removed from your body. Neither your arm or groin are ever consulted and never have the chance to say anything about it.:-)
How many people died or will die, or get improper treatment because of this networking glitch? If the hospital is as large as described, certainly a number of persons were given inadequate healthcare while they were there.
Though it sounds a little bit "big-brothery" for my wireless device to know where I am at all times, I know that it is going to happen anyway. They can already triangulate the location of your cellphone. We might as well use it for location specific apps.
I can think of TONS of great apps that would be location specific. For instance, a GPS that would tell you where the nearest Pizza Hut is. A Or a two-way radio or other device that also told you WHERE the other person is. Paying tolls automatically is a good one too.
Ethical Problems? They already do it.

Why are they having ethical problems with it? It is already being done in a smaller scale all the time. If I understand it correctly, in order to create recombinant monoclonal antibody drugs like Remicade, they place human antibody genes into a bacteria and have the the bacteria pump out antibodies.
People complain and say that scientists should not make half-animal-half-man creatures and mix creatures. Just because it doesn't LOOK like some sort of chimera doesn't make it NOT a chimera.
Isn't antibody engineering and this the same thing?
Yes, big books are kind of a trend in the computer-book realm. Where else in the bookstore would you find monstrous tomes like the ones you see on Visual Basic or Java?
It has a lot to do with how much they charge for these books. You want $50 for a book that costs $3 to print? (I can hear the anti-RIAA trolls now:-) Much like the huge portions that restaurants now serve, people want to feel that they are getting some value for the obviously inflated prices. Even if they were only going to eat a small amount, they are happy to see a huge plate of food for their $12.
If you were to get a normal sized entree (or book) for the amount of money you are spending, you would feel that something is wrong, that you are getting ripped off somehow. Big books sell more than small books. Even if the content is the same. They will make the typeface larger and include tons of screenshots if that is what it takes to make a massive volume.
Have you used the Microsoft Visual Studio? It makes your life amazingly easy by finishing your words for you, making it easy to find functions, it gives you hints about what the arguments to each function are. It is all around a great piece of work.
If Perl had an IDE that was as easy to use it would dominate the world. (more than it already does)
I guess you can consider these other things theft also:
Using the Lynx web browser Any TV using Tivo or ReplayTV Going to the bathroom during commercial breaks. Coming to the movies a bit late for the commercials.

Now that Oracle owns Sparc processors from Sun, there is no reason for them to help out their competitor.

Just something to think about.

I consider it duress, but what do I know?

afree87: Since you are probably wondering what the other posts are talking about:
You're = You are
Your = Possessive form of "you".
And I agree totally. Spelling and grammar are how I judge others' education. (not necessarily intellegence...)
Though I don't claim that my spelling and grammar are that good...

Well, until Microsoft took it over, the Web was a very good multi-platform development environment....
From the point of a single product, they have a good point. Eventually, the programmer will/might realize that he could have written the same program for Windows, and have made himself a living writing programs (outside of the rat race, might I add)
At that point, the product will be left hanging.

This is what you get when you have a high-unemployment rate in the tech business...
3 or 4 years ago, this would have had several million dollars of venture capital behind it!

Thats nothing! Compare that to Iridium, which had 66 satellites that became space junk shortly after being launched. :-)
Now if they could set up wireless access on the beaches here in Florida, we would have something!
