She was rubbing her head for a little bit after I whacked her, but she wasn't even crying. She doesn't have a really low pain tolerance like a lot of 5 year olds, but believe me, if it had hurt her that bad she would be crying.

And no, I wouldn't take her to the hospital for whacking her on the head. I'm not a psych person, but I did take an introductory psychology class. It's a pretty basic principle of psychology that the way we are raised does have a lot of bearing on our mental development. Parents who overreact to every injury or ailment that a child has will generally produce children with extremely low pain tolerance, and borderline hypochondriacs. I've been around enough people who act that way to think that it's not healthy. The instinctive reaction that a person has to a hurt child is not necessarily the correct one.

It's better to overcome your instinct and joke with the kid a little to get them to cheer up rather than fawning over them. Which is exactly what I did with this kid. I laughed, asked if she was okay, pointed at the TV, and said "Look! I got a home run! You should do that every time. Now where did the battery cover go?". Or something like that. But that's the general basis of what I did. There was no bleeding, no bump, and she wasn't that injured. I think that the battery cover flying off absorbed a lot of the shock as kinetic energy.

  2. My experience. on U.S. Safety Commision 'Keeping an Eye' on the Wii · · Score: 4, Funny

I've had a Wii since launch. I've dropped the remote once or twice while playing (I think both times were while boxing. I'm terrible at the game, so I pretty much do the equivalent of button mashing, which is waving it around wildly). The strap held up just fine.

A more serious incident was when I was playing Baseball with my girlfriend's 5 year old daughter. She was pitching, and I was batting. She was standing almost directly in front of the TV as usual, and I was standing further back, near the wall so that I was out of reach of her. What happened was she pitched the ball, and then stepped back for some reason. I was taking a swing at the ball, and I was fairly focused on the TV. I heard a very satisfying CRACK! as the remote hit her head, and the bat hit the ball. I got a home run. She got a hurt head. And learned an important lesson about Wii safety. She hasn't done that again. ;-)

(Yeah, I know that I'm a bastard. But surprisingly, she wasn't that hurt, despite me whacking her in the back of the head nearly as hard as I could. (The battery cover flew off of the remote, but it was otherwise undamaged, and the battery cover didn't break))

I'm still waiting for the promised 2D Metroid for NDS. Or better yet, 2.5D, as is the case of the New Super Mario Bros.

Of course there's still a market for sidescrollers. The New SMB proved that quite well with astounding sales. The problem is that most developers are completely stuck on 3D graphics still. You know, in some ways 3D graphics are a bit easier than 2D though. With 3D, you have to create models, animations, and textures. With 2D, you have to hand draw each and every frame. It seems like a bit more work to me.

But the programming side of a 2D game is MUCH MUCH less strenuous.

  4. Re: Yamauchi vs. SquareSoft on Dragon Quest IX for Nintendo DS · · Score: 2, Informative

That's a load of crock. It was money out of Yamauchi's pocket that funded Square's return to Nintendo, via the Game Designer's Studio. It wasn't his stepping down that allowed Square to develop for Nintendo systems again. It was the public apology from Square for their actions during the N64/PSX era, and the demotion of their officers.

Basically, Square flooded the consumers with anti-Nintendo propaganda, and publicly stated that they would never develop for a Nintendo system again, during the FF7 promotions. There is also a rumour that Square convinced Enix to move Dragon Quest to Playstation, costing Nintendo BIG TIME. Nintendo took a huge loss in sales over the incident, and held a grudge against Square for years.

Square started to feel the pain as well when the GBA came out. It was a PERFECT system for them to develop for. They could port many of their old games to it, and make tonnes of money. In addition, the FF Movie bombed big time, and Square was in TROUBLE. They really had no choice but to bite the bullet and give Nintendo their apology, to gain permission to develop for the handheld. A side effect of the deal was a Final Fantasy game for GameCube.

I've worked in a call center (Comcast High Speed Internet Technical Support). It's nothing like that. I don't think even the most nazi call center boss you can find would do that. For two reasons:

    1) Nobody would work there.
    2) A recording would do the job far better.

Basically, how it works is that you are told to give the customer accurate information to the best of your ability (although slanted in favour of the company). You also follow guidelines while in the call, to keep in accordance with company policy. You can get in trouble for going outside of those guidelines, but they are guidelines, not rules. The whole reason you are there, instead of a recording is to keep the customer happy.

Now, what I would have done in this case (and would have gotten full support from my supervisor), would have been to credit the ~$60 back to the customer's account, and inform him that he will see the credit on next month's bill. (We actually were only allowed to credit a maximum of $50 without going through the billing department, but the point remains).

No, I think the short and sweet of this story is that Verizon employs morons. (And just a tip, if you ever call Comcast, and get someone with a Texas accent, ask if they are from Lubbock. If they say "yes", then just hang up and call back).

The police have been tipped off that he might have molested someone's kid, but they can't get any evidence of that actually happening, and the suspect will not allow police to search his property. An angry coalition of parents descends on his house, and burns his house to the ground. Police later find that the man never molested any children.

I made that comment because of the lack of a fully working Wine on Macs. Your native games tend to be the ones that work the best in Wine or Cedega, but you pay a high premium for the Mac version, rather than the Windows version that's usually cheaper. That is changing now that Apple is adopting x86, but it's still nowhere near the compatibility of Linux.

I didn't originally mention it, because I thought it went without saying, but Linux also has Doom 3 and Unreal Tournament. Cedega also supports Civ 4, but I hate the program, so I didn't mention that either. So no, I can run all those games you listed in Linux. I just think that the enhanced functionality of Wine in Linux makes it a better gaming platform.

Just regular Wine. I did purchase a Cedega subscription for a few months. But the software is truly terrible. It's usually not as good as Wine, and I had an absolutely horrid experience even trying to get officially supported games to run. (Pirates in particular) I wouldn't recommend purchasing the software. It's a waste of money IMO.

As far as Prey and Farcry, they really aren't my style. I do own a copy of Farcry (I got it for free), but I've never tried it under Linux. It would appear that the wine appdb is down at the moment. But a quick googling reveals that Farcry is supported by Cedega, which means it probably works to some degree in Wine, and Prey works perfectly. (Unsurprising, as it's based on Doom 3). So I'm tentatively prepared to say "yes". They run in Linux.

I agree. It neglected to mention actual native Linux games, such as DEFCON, or these. It focused almost solely on running Windows games on Linux. But it didn't even do a good job of that. It focused on saying how much Cedega sucked (it does), and how it's possible to run WoW on crossover. It did NOT seem to mention Wine, and it didn't seem to notice that MOST older games run just fine in Wine.

I do actually dual boot on my main gaming box. But I don't boot into Windows all that often, you might be surprised to learn. I only really boot into Windows for Civ 4, and Battlefield 2/2142. That's about it. In Linux, I run Starcraft, Warcraft, Homeworld, Tropico, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and many others. No, it's not native. But it does work. And it's nowhere near as sorry a state of affairs as a Mac. And we DO have SOME native games. (not many, but some). Saying that you NEED a dual boot system is just nonsense. I do dual boot as there's some games I just have to have. But I think for the average person, Linux might do the job just fine if you are willing to miss out on some things.
