  1. Re:Reluctance to change on Why Does Windows Still Suck? · · Score: 1

    I hate this talk.

I switched from Windows on PC to Linux on PC and then to a Mac. I do think that Panther is the best Desktop OS now and it will only be surpassed by Tiger.

Having said that, Macs are still computers and are vulnerable to the same faults as PCs. My Mac has hard crashed 3 times since I got it (about a year and 3 months ago) and Safari probably crashes about 5 times a month, maybe less. My point is, is that while I do think that Macs are much better than all of the competition out there, Macs are still computers and they're not perfect. It's embarrassing to hear Mac heads go on as if Macs are .

AFAIK, the G5 generates less heat than the P4 so Apple could put out a G5 laptop tomorrow if they wanted but would mean a hotter, louder and bigger laptop which is not Apple's game.

My iBook's running with a 933MHz G4 and it's hunky dory except for video encoding (which it really isn't made for).

The Bill Gates interview wasn't great. Gates just ducked and dived out of every question and promoted his company all the while. I suppose, what would you expect him to say, "Yeah, you're right. MS does have a really bad history with security and Longhorn is constantly being delayed. We're a crap company, sorry!"?

The Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD section was much more interesting. It seems like Blue Ray is the better technology but with HD-DVD having a years head start and being much cheaper to produce, it looks like HD-DVD has the upper hand. Only time'll tell I suppose...

I think you and most of the people in these comments are missing the whole point of what Linguists do. They study language. Language is what people speak/write, not what they should speak/write.

I'm studying Computational Linguistics and when I'm doing a project that needs some kind of corpus, I usually scan a few thousands words of English from Google searches and put them into a corpus.

Computational Linguists want to write/use programs that can somehow interact with natural human language. What's the point in training said program on "unnatural" language (language that is ought to be spoken but only makes up a fraction of actual written/spoken language)? It probably won't be able to interact as efficiently with natural language as a program that's trained on raw language sources.

Plus, the cheap, headless Mac would be unbelievably popular. Slashdot geeks have been screaming out for this for years. Also, all those "I'd switch but Macs are too expensive" people won't have anymore excuses :) Apple could only win with this.
