Let me know when they can make a great hollywood film that is actually worth watching and not another one of their boring documentaries. Let me know when they have some actual good music come out of there.
It is nice that they can pride themselves on the past and history, but that doesn't help them get great actors, musicians, directors and produce some good material. Now take a look at their former colonies, geeez thanks Dutch.
As far as I can tell, the filesharers are living off the fruits developed by mainly Americans and British. The creativity factor remains high in these two countries, for very good reason that are not because of filesharing. I think it is funny to try to turn filesharing into some sort of economic savior. Just give me my shit for free and I don't care about the politics, way too much over analyzing.
They already exist and have for quite some time, especially out here in California the epicenter for computer development and waste.
Mainly churches have been the center piece for this volunteer business and salvation army.
Some woman in downtown Los Angeles does this on her free time accepting these old computers, they strip them and see what parts still work. They rebuild another computed and sell them for very cheap to people who are poor. It allows a lot of Mexican children to finally have a computer to accomplish basic work.
This has been going on for a long time, I am surprised it has gotten no coverage on Slashdot compared to all the time wasted on the dead end project of OLPC.
I remember the local news station had pictures of some poor Mexican lady coming down with only $15 in her hand, she walked out with a working desktop computer, screen and printer all working. They had gone from nothing to something, later they showed the computer in some little girls room as she was using it with a smile.
hahahah so I did a little youtube search and sorted by the most recently dated upload to prove to all the fear mongers around here exaggerate and blow everything out of proportion. All uploaded in last 24 hours
I used to ride Amtrak all the time down to San Diego, saw plenty of people and young teenagers takeing photos on the side of the train and standing in front of it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlVPGuX7Ufk This video was uploaded by a guy named 'LondonTransportFan69', so you might want to ask him exactly what they do. Judging by his video collection, I would say they have no problems what so ever.
Student permits Crew size: Five or less with lightweight, handheld equipment only Permit cost: £30 inc VAT - valid one month from date of issue Filming in drivers cab: £300 plus VAT
for £300 you can stand in the drivers cab and record, that is pretty damn cool they let you do that.
it only costs £30 for a one month license.
This doesn't sound right though because I had friends who traveled there a couple months back and one of their photos was them going down into the subway.
A simple google or other image site search for London Underground shows up plenty of recent results that were uploaded.
--------------------- Does London Underground have any restrictions on what people can film or photograph?
Yes. In accordance with our byelaws, we do not permit the filming of the following activities:
* Vandalism or graffiti
* Ticket touting
* Assaults on passengers or staff
* Fare evasion
* Use of firearms or other weapons
* Misuse of escalators or any other London Underground property
* Unlicensed busking
* Begging
* Smoking or the use of illegal drugs -----------------------
This really seems to affect TV/documentary crews more than the average person, in fact they actually allow a person in the cab for a really small fare and a supervisor stands next to you.
I really don't see where the problem is, other than what a little research and google search would stop the fear mongering mod points.
In my daytime job I part time operate a 800HP CAT 966G Wheel Loader that was finely modified in Germany and imported back to California.
I drive a 4banger Toyota Tacoma and get perfectly to work with all my heavy tools, unlike others who drive trucks in Southern California the terrain I arrive to at the job site is not very nice and smooth to drive on. Although getting past some of the potholes and on the LA freeway system and dodging homeless people does require a little 4 wheel drive.
Yet my 2WD gets me perfectly fine up and down sharp grades of slope and through the muddiest crap, maybe a tow once or twice a year after getting stuck. Nothing that good driving and keeping a good eye forward of you that cannot be solved. I am a super small minority of drivers who actually runs into these type of terrain.
It gets me up the mountains to go snowboarding, 4 wheel drive only gets you farther stuck in the snow in the conditions around here. People up North actually need 4 wheel drive during winter unlike us in the nice warm tropic zone.
Forget when I had to stop by a Ford dealership to pickup one of our heavier duty work trucks from repair all I got were a bunch of raised eyebrows. Now I drive by that dealership it looks almost like a ghost town with the vultures straying out front. Toyota dealership isn't doing that great either, the economy has hit a lot of them. Anyways I have always bought used.
People like to crack on me for the weak truck but their arguments are kind of dead end when I try to figure out exactly what they are hauling to work, ahhh its a little smaller and the frame is weak(kiss my ass and keep drinkin from the Saudi's).
P.S. Our company at one time used to lay and build the foundations for data centers, saw a lot of cool technology moved in afterward.
We used to travel in groups of cars to job sites we had and one of our guys had the best thing ever.
He would play his mp3's but they would be broadcast over a certain radio station 98.1 over the little device he would plug into the input connector of his mp3 player. If you were within about 5-6 car lengths you could pickup what he was listening to, I imagine with a little more powerful antenna you would share with the whole freeway and since we are in L.A. traffic than it is stop and go all the way home..
I would setup and LED sign advertising to tune it to a certain radio station and the song that was playing at the moment so other commuters could enjoy what you were listening to.
Share the wealth I say, plus you advertise your phone number on there and take request.
Sad thing is that even though Verizon has fiber to the home, their speeds for the basic package are only 1-2mbps faster than cable and the pricing is not worth the switch. Really depends where you live also, so some of these stories of bad broadband speeds sometime come from people out in the middle of nowhere and doesn't reflect the general greater population.
My ping is actually better on my cable than my roommates FIOS, still I think FIOS will ultimately win in the long run. Cable usually has fiber to the block, but with Docsis 3.0 being implemented and I am already receiving 15/3 with cable. Cable companies are reaping the benefits of laying these cable lines now while Verizon will have to approach cautiously, also I could imagine cable dropping in the last mile/block with fiber.
They are all holding back and Verizon has not really been the savior around here in Southern California, besides places like Huntington Beach,CA where the city mandated that Time Warner(Road Runner) upgrade their services to match FIOS. If only cities like this would demand more out of the contract they sign, unfortunately anybody who has built homes in Huntington Beach knows they have very strict bulding code around there and the people are a little more smarter/demanding about what they want from their services.
You just don't understand the culture aspect of it all and how these gangs work in the poor neighborhoods. The 'don't snitch policy' has devastated entire neighborhoods, gang warfare, the crack epidemic and the list just goes on. How far and invasive do you want to go to stop these activities; because when you have the entire family not saying a word about their dead sons killer even though they know who he is.
Germany doesn't exactly have the Compton, Queens and type neighborhoods; so they are dealing with entirely different cultural.
I think the '3-strikes law' puts fear into the criminals mind knowing that he shouldn't do that crime, if you have ever seen a car chase where the felon has two strikes knowing they are going away for a long time they will do absolutely suicidal stuff to get away from the cops. Those ones they just call of the chase and get the guy later, unless it was drive by or murder.
Living in California we passed a law recently to help with rehabilitation for prisoners and felons to get them out of the system, it goes deeper than that though.
African-Americans have some of the most broken homes and fatherless children than anybody else. This is a culture problem where African-American need to start standing up to this and take action, living in quiet fear is not going to help their children who are committing murders at ages 11. I don't remember reading last time a 11yr old German kid shot a 45 year old over a drug deal, maybe the cannibalism part.
Oh yah and I am so sure Russia is land of the free, more like woman abusers and alcoholics galore over there. I always get a crack out of videos on the internet of the Russian police officers drunk on the streets making a scene or when they come to investigate a guy drunk off his ass who just crashed his car, nothing happens. No wonder they make no arrests and no one is in jail, the police are pathetic and when they need to take down the armed guys they bring in government special forces.
You really want me to post the soldiers personal video of when they are standing on the roof and have to go downstairs to a bunch of suicidal terrorist who they though had been killed already. They think everyone is dead down there and as they start walking down the stairs, the soldiers sees one of the guys and they open fire on the soldier. These guys start yelling "allah ahkbar", so they were obviously just sitting there waiting for the soldiers to come down to finish them off. They pulled back and leveled the whole house only to find about 3 dead terrorist they show on the video armed to the teeth. Leveling a house is fine, but I would prefer they have a camera inside to see get a view of what is inside and where they are hiding.
So what if they see the ball coming in the room knowing that soldiers will be coming in for them, they will have the position surrounded anyways and anything that peeps its head outside or try to escape will be stopped.
Situations like these happen all the time and you really should see some of the combat videos coming out of Iraq/Afghanistan, it will open your eyes to what chaos is really going on over there and what these soldiers have to face. Future Weapons on the Military Channel is also another great show where they show lots of cool technology, most of which is beginning to make its way to the field. This is article is a little dated because I saw the same thing mentioned in this article was show on the show 'Future Weapons' many months ago, the guy from the company came out and demonstrated what it could do. It was durable and took less than a couple of seconds for the ball to level out and get a clear picture, they had some fake enemy standing in the corner with a rifle ready to ambush and took him out. This stuff is already out in the field and I heard it was compatible with the screens from the Marines personal UAV briefcase display.
UAV and FLIR dominate at night time, unless the enemy starts getting night vision than I think they are in a world of trouble with 24/7/365 UAV coverage flying over the enemies position.
I knew there would be a comment like yours that would be shot up immediately with +5 as if it somehow reflects the market and the mentality of the pirates.
In reality if you have the full pirated game for free than there is no point in going to buy it, get this through your thick skull that it is impossible to compete against free. Maybe if this were a multiplayer game than you would have a point as some people would be forced into buying it, but that is not the case and turning a naive blind eye to what really goes on.
People are lazy and the hypocrite defends of thepiratebay are getting a taste of their own medicine. Unfortunately a lot of the comments around here will be "oh I pirated it, loved it so much that I had to buy it". It was the same thing with the Radiohead syndrome, I went straight to thepiratebay and got the biggest disc collection download.
I pirated the game and played it all the way through without buying it(not really). Mod me up. Mod points do not equal what is really going on in the real world, but rather an agenda with a click of a button.
But hey turn a blind eye to what really is going on, back to the RIAA war.... This company should go bankrupt soon, sad but true. Hows that for irony?
It was a stereotype for awhile and it was true that a lot of people/families from India ran the 7-11's, when the mass immigration took place. This is true about the dry cleaner also, it is a mostly dominated by Asians and there is some history to that but that's for another day, not racist it is just they dominate that industry.
Most of the 7-11's these days are run by the Indians because they have a lease from 7-11 for them, basically their family members run the business until they have enough money to buyout the establishment to run themselves. What you are seeing now is a lot of those families who ran the business are now reaping the benefits of the hard work they put in to save up for the buyout(whatever it is called), replaced with the steady Mexican worker now.
I talked to a 7-11 clerk one day who explained that they own a couple of them and have worked their way up to it.
Living in Southern California you experience a lot of different nationalities and after walking into a 7-11 for the past 15 years to get coffee.
Thank god we have Fry's around here and they still beat the price of everybody, it has every thing you can think of and if you live near a metropolitan they should have one within 50 miles.
That's what my step-father who worked for Apple in their development and than eventually went into tool design at Boeing/Arrowhead got me hooked on the tech. We would take a trip down to FRY's while he would get hit stuff I would play some of the games and than go on a learning tour of all the products lying around.
Radio Shack is all but dead and they should be going on the Bankruptcy list along with Circuit City soon, they scaled back the one by me, shuffled the employees around and eventually closed. They still hadn't cleared out most of the trays with components/fuses and other stuff in there that hadn't been touched in 5 years. Dying out breed is what the 'do it yourself' types are and competing against these all-in-one units dished out by China dominate the hardware you used to be able to tweak and get more out of.
Well out here in Southern California mine came out digital and on paper, improved machines from last time.
The new diebold machines I think they were, are actually an improvement from the last ones. These ones had the digital setup like last time but now on the left side there was a glass plate that would print out your results for you to see on paper through the glass and go into the roller in case the machine broke. The paper receipt could be looked at, I only saw one machine down out of the 20 or so in my polling place. I accidently pushed the big red button above the glass printout cover and it would have let me access the receipts I am pretty sure, as soon as I pressed it the glass popped up and I though for a second that I could grab all the voters receipts with their name on it I believe. I pushed the glass cover back down and turned the dial to confirm my vote looked correct. Simple.
There was one paper voting booth but most people were using the digital ones and mostly the elderly were going to the paper booth box.
I felt a little satisfied that there was a paper backup to check against the computers and my exact vote. Can't believe these machines aren't getting any press on Slashdot, for all the comments that talked about a paper backup they have actually done it. Hello?
Yah I don't have to run A-squared anti virus, spybot S&D, Ad-aware or any of the other stuff that I used to have to run with XP.
I don't understand why they wouldn't want to attack Vista? For now it is a huge leap from XP in security, but eventually things get exploited and it is only a matter of time. Although with Vista I think we can avoid those drive by downloads a lot more and it will come down to once again the user clicking 'Yes/Allow' which will be the kicker. Some of the worst ones are the cracks for programs.
Even than viruses that have wreaked havoc on my XP machines have done nothing but been denied on the Vista machine.
Kind of relieving since it was almost a annoying habit of having to worry where I tip toe on the internet and the annoying habit of constantly having to run my anti-spyware. Almost an addiction having to run those programs or maybe every time after you ran it, it just made you more paranoid.
Why don't they take all the crypto machines and other stuff in the house, donate it to the Smitsonian or other large British museums where they could be on display for many more people to see than some rickety old house out in the middle of nowhere. Hell do a world tour of the stuff and setup mock rooms to display the stuff with fake dolls manning the machines and audio clips playing of an incoming air raid, get some attention and media coverage on the stuff.
It just seems like this history is in the wrong location and inaccessible to a lot of people. Doesn't sound like a place I would want to visit either, not very appealing(sorry just cold hard truth). Many of the WW2 locations including Normandy are crumbling away with no intent on rebuilding the bunkers, gun emplacements, fortresses, secret submarine stations and much other stuff that actual WW2 veterans can relate to. If you want to save Bletchley Park than get the WW2 vets on your side, because time is limited and that generation is dying out very quickly.
I am Californian and I don't think we should donate money to refurbish a secret WW2 crypto huts 'IN ENGLAND'. Personally I would get a good moving company and move the entire village to a location that is more accessible or downtown London. I liked that one bunker under the parliamentary building and how the war room was all laid out as if the war had just ended. How much funds go toward the medieval era museums with all the armory and the one with a giant room of knights armor and weapons.
California has the largest population of any state and we are literally an economy in itself, so don't be surprised when you open the California section in the LA Times to read a couple million was raised for Sea lions, the wetlands or maybe raise money for Briney Spears to get a new wig.
You want me as a Californian to donate money to Bletchley Park, move the entire park to my city.
The only sad state of affairs is that this is in Britain and they cannot even raise the money for it from their own government/people. Have some pride in what your country men did for you, take a little money from the Royal families fund and divert it to Bletchley Park since they saved their life.
I voted on the Prop. 8, as long as we aren't passing laws to restrict where and when people can go or other civil rights issues than I have no problem with it. I didn't donate one penny to that cause for 'yes' or 'no' advertising, I did however donate money and volunteer time to take care of the wetlands project locally around here.
Yah I went to the link and saw the page of ads, with one picture per page.
Than I came back to Slashdot and big picture ads in between the comments.
Ahhh, I can't get away from it.
I believe NASA is sending one of their future rovers for the Mars mission down the path to go by the president.
Let me know when they can make a great hollywood film that is actually worth watching and not another one of their boring documentaries.

Dude, don't shoot yourself in the head over that. There are better ways to approach problems in life, killing yourself is not one of them.

Easy on the fear mongering there little Slashie.
You forgot to mention the lost and recovered part, which when looked at is only about a dozen or so are left unaccounted for.
There is not 92 nuclear weapons lying around, most are harmless and there atmospheric blast caused a lot more damage compared to this.
This problem only affects XP so if you are running Vista than you should have no problems.
Unfortunately that is where the viruses are at right now on XP, ouch.
I didn't donate one penny to that cause for 'yes' or 'no' advertising, I did however donate money and volunteer time to take care of the wetlands project locally around here.
your clock is a little off...
