I've always considered Wiki to be a real life version of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Sure it may not be the most reputable sort run out of a stuffy university somewhere by a bunch of old guys, but instead is a bunch of semi-random stuff that touches on everything from the important to the Mostly Harmless type stuff. Some of the suggestions about cleaning up vandalism I think would make more sense over excluding stuff simply because it's not academic enough or whatever.
If Wiki goes the way of an "old school" Encyclopedia, I think someone will take up the torch and give what the people want, a guide to Life, the Universe, and Everything in between.
Eh what? First off, FFXI isn't made by Sony, it's made by Square Enix. Also it wasn't the FFXI Site that got hacked, it was a major fan site outside of SE's control that had an Ad that would install malicious code, the site was ffxi.somepage.com (it has now been corrected is my understanding, safe to visit, or just use Opera or Firefox to work around it)
SE is dropping the ball in this area though, I know a few people that got screwed and lost their accounts like this.
Well you obviously know your stuff, so I think we'll just agree to disagree. The W3C is far from perfect, but the likely hood of them witholding necessary information about a spec I think is just a BIT less then MIcrosoft, and I'm afraid your not going to be able to convince me otherwise. Yup, I prefer HTML, with any flaws it may have, over Silverlight.
Ah ok, so if I want Silverlight in my Firefox, I just download the plugin like I do for Flash right? I already admitted I don't know much about how to get Silverlight going in Linux, so since some of what I said was wrong, I thank you for correcting me.
As I said before I don't think Flash is so wonderful either. But just curious. When version 2, or 3, or w/e, of Silverlight comes out will they be releasing the Linux version too? Or do I have to wait for some nice Open Source chaps to figure out how it works then implement it themselves? When a new version of HTML comes out, from MY understanding, whoever makes the browser just releases a new version of the browser that supports the new HTML code... not dependent on a company providing the spec.
Sorry, but your talking to someone who, until Microsoft gives control to a 3rd party, impartial committee that provides the full spec, I'll stick with HTML. Not flash. not silverlight. Yes I do believe HTML is more open the Silverlight or Flash.
Ok I'll bite. Let's compare... if I want flash in *nix, I install Adobe Flash along with Firefox. A very simple basic procedure. Mono, however, is a systemwide library system I believe, so I have to modify my system, to get something where I can install a plugin for in Firefox. (I admit I don't know Silverlight well so if this is wrong PLEASE correct me, is there a plugin for it for Firefox and Opera?)
Now I'm not saying Flash is wonderful, in fact like I said I prefer HTML. Why? I know the spec. If the spec chagnes I know about it. If Microsoft, after destroying the competition, decides to drop support for the fringe markets like OSX and Linux, whatchagonna do about it? Just like Adobe did with Flash (for awhile there installing Flash on Linux was a PITA) Now if Adobe provides bad Linux support, how well do you think Microsoft will do?
Hell look at stuff like IE for Mac. Ya, Microsofts history of providing a multi-platform environment is just littered with such stuff. This isn't Microsoft FUD, I dont trust Adobe or Apple to be much better, hence why stuff by a STANDARDS BODY for stuff like HTML is the way to go. NOT Flash. NOT Silverlight. But for now I consider Flash the lesser of two evils.
With HTML I dont have to worry about what kindness an organization provides, and whether or not they feel dropping support is best for Them.
Last I checked all you need is notepad, vim, or emacs to build a rather snazzy CSS / HTML based site with fancy scripts if you want. I haven't worked with Silverlight but I have heard from others it is easy to work with, so it does have that. But as someone who rather likes not being tied to any 1 OS, be it OSX, Windows, or *nix, I'll stick with the truely open HTML option (ya I know Silverlight runs on most but that's more due to the grace of Microsoft than anything, and requires special libraries like Mono I think if your not running a main OS)
The thing is this ISNT just another web technology, this is a MICROSOFT technology, which historically has always ment you need to run a Microsoft Enironment to get the benefit out of it. Microsofts not evil, but they're not exactlly open either.
It did suck I agree, but it's changed, you can now access the Playstation Store via a PC (currently only Windows it's a special app, this is Sony we're talking about;)) and download from your PC to your PSP.
What I want is accessing the store ON my PSP though... still not there yet.
It's true... I know an Engineer type who's honestly a lot smarter then me, and can use their massively complex computer system to control flow of gas and such across the country, but doesn't comprehend the difference between Word and Windows, or other "basic" concepts. There's no sane explanation that after 10 years he would'nt be able to grasp it, other then he's put up mental block guards.
Sad really. I suppose I'll reach a point in my life where I won't want to learn either:(
First off I agree, not worth it, but I also don't play WoW.. however from what I read on another site (hey this is/., did'nt rtfa but I'm assuming it includes the same info) this also includes stuff like Beta Keys for all future content, backpack, figurine of your own online character etc... assuming that's true that's pretty cool. Not $4500 or w/e it costs cool, but still kinda cool.
Except what Gamespot is doing is a short term solution to a bigger problem. Ok so they can the respectable guys, to ensure revenue from Ad's come in. Why are there ad's in the first place? Because of site traffic. Now if you start screwing your clients over, eventually this will have an impact on site traffic, and eventually they'll loose both ad's and site traffic. If you keep site traffic high, you can use this to your advertisers and say hey, this is where people go. You want to advertise here, you play by our rules aka we don't hide the truth. That may be a bit naieve to believe, but I do.
Well said... RAID is good for one thing only, rapid restoring of services. If you have data you really are worried about, you want to go with Backups like you said. RAID doesn't replace Backups in any sense of the word, and 90% of home users aren't looking for RAID, they want Backup. Many people confuse the two.
Best solution I have found is no RAID, and sufficent space in a secondary system that you make backups to every . For that REALLY critical stuff, such as source code of programs, important busuiness doc's and the like, you store on an offsite system that you make backups to less reguarly. This way you have it in three locations, which means even in the event of failure you have two copies of it somewhere.
For me I have an external hard drive I ferry between myself and someone I trust once a month. Weekly my server backs up to my main rig. (It might seem silly to backup to the system I use most of the time, but I actually have several systems that access various forms of information (laptop, media box, etc) from time to time)
Eventually I'd like to get some super efficient Via system to leave on all the time, but haven't found anything cheap enough yet. And this solution has let me use the hand me down parts from when I upgrade.
Just curious what sort of visa are you required to do this? I have to have a passport to enter the US from Canada, but that's it. is this for non North American countries?
I was reading elsewhere (forget the source now, probably Joystiq or some such) that the 360 sells more games per console then the other 2 by a fairly wide margian.
I would wish for all three to remain competitive, just having 2 is too close to one going out for the count and us left with a monopoly. Nintendo's had a bad history with that in the past, and of course MS and Sony need no explanation as to why that would be bad.:)
Hmm... I never thought about it as scraping the bottom for the 360 and PS3.. but that's probably a really good way of putting it. I haven't found anything that disproves what you said. That would be impressive for the 360 if they can keep it up, it's usually far, far, FAR behind. It's all DS, PSP, and Wii (of course) in Japan these days from the looks of it.
Source? Because that would be amazing, the last I saw the difference was about 6x (18k vs 3k), in favor of the PS3.
Assuming your right, I would'nt pop the champaign just yet. The PS3 has in previous weeks outsold the 360 in America (see price drop), but I hardly call the PS3 a victor over here. Far from it.
Something I still don't understand is why Ubuntu sticks with NetworkManager... unless it's changed in Gutsy it's a PITA to do what you said for wireless. WICD, on the other hand, does everything you'd expect a wireless manager to do, and does it very well. It will even run before you log in (ideal if you do authentication over the network) It's in the repo's i think but as it's not there by default does require file editing to get it to run on startup etc.
So I'm not disputing anything what your saying, although Gutsy is quite a leap I think compared to Feisty.
Ya might be because i'm "older" but the best, BEST, Super Mario game I've played in recent memory is New SMB for the DS. No screwing around with cameras or anything, just pure good old fashioned platform jumping. I have nothing wrong with 3D, and nowadays it can look absolutly amazing, but long live 2D!:D
Does EA run any MMO's other then Ultima Online? Sims Online, NFS MOtorcity or w/e it was called, died horrible deaths last I heard. UO2 and UO:X was cancelled. I agree that they may have cringed when looking at the realities of running an MMO, but I don't think EA would be at the top of my list of companies that can run an MMO well. Hell I'd pick SoE over em, and that is NOT saying much considering I've despised most of their games.
All the assurances in the world still don't get the bad taste that Westwood and Origin's deaths created. I hope I'm wrong.
I'll second that. The gameplay was very fun in Q4. I generally buy games for the single player experience primarily. (TeamFortress 2 is a big exception to that). I actually liked the storyline in Quake4, it was there, but did'nt get in the way of a good firefight:D
As someone that uses Windows for gaming, and Linux for everything else, there's no WAY I'm touching Vista until at least SP1. And yes I do actually have a DX10 card. DX10's benefits are few, while the performance hit from running Vista is greater. I'm sure eventually Vista will be good, and driver support will be there, but until then, if your just gaming in Windows, use XP.
Oh man I totally forgot about that... I loved UO back in the day, I mean sure if you think about MMO's now the game is/was laughable, but can't deny it was groundbreaking. I remember me and my buddy trying to build a house using crates, back when we did'nt realize crates would eventually vanish. We thought some thief was stealing our "walls", turns out we were just n00bs not knowing how things work:P
UO, M59, EQ1, those days were fun, when nobody knew how to make a good MMO really because it never had been done before, most people were on dialup, etc etc. Kinda reminds me of the early days of the automobile before the big companys streamlined the whole thing for the masses.
Corp Por or Vas Flam still run shivers down my spine. Free trial for previous subscribers eh? Might just give that a go...
It felt very much like God of War to me, and I really enjoyed the combat more to be honest. In Heavenly Sword you have three "stances" that change your attacks radically. Getting crowded in use the ranged attack to back everyone up then focus on one guy with speed or the big attack stances. You switch back and forth on the fly (controlled with the shoulder buttons) time your counter attacks right and it's an instant kill for you mixed with a sweet CS sometimes. Getting banged up and flung in the air? Shake the controller a bit and She'll use the Heavenly Blade to counter and rip the guy a new oriface.
I haven't played Dynasty or N3, but I'm really digging the combat compared to God of War. If i sound excited about the game, it's because I am:P Ya the length sucks for most, but my time is far less available then when I was younger so I appreciate that I can actually finish a game for once.
YMMV, but that's my 2 cents. LIke anything rent before you get it I say, but I would definitly try it out, especially if you liked God Of War.

"When you'd see PCs make a beeline for a rare NPC within seconds of it spawning, you knew something was up."
For some reason I had a vision of you as a GM appearing in front of em and using your godlike powers to kick their ass and send em running away.
Wish that's actually how it worked in these games, would be pretty sweet watchin a GM kick the crap out of some Gold/Gil/Credit farmers.
