    Why is this modded up?

Fiber reinforced materials have been around for years. Carbon and glass fiber reinforced polymers are used in many everyday applications without harm. The problem with asbestos was its crystal structure and cleavage planes, which enabled it to break down into very small (micrometer scale) fibers that were easily inhaled.

The above comment is about as insightful as saying "Cotton fiber? That seems eerily reminiscent of asbestos, better not wear clothes!" or "AIDS medicine? Wasn't thalidomide also orally available in pill form? Better not give it to pregnant women..."

  2. And to think I used to worry about this... on Microsoft Scales Down Palladium · · Score: 4, Funny
I used to be afraid of what Palladium could do for the computing industry. Many tried to convince me that there was nothing to fear because there was no way in heck Microsoft could ever get anything done right and on time. It appears they were correct. Now it's being partially dropped from Longhorn, which is itself being pushed back to oblivion. Now I'm left wondering why I used to be worried.

Heck, Microsoft cannot even secure its own "proprietary" gaming console, why did we ever fear that they'd lock down all of our computers?!

Perhaps Microsorft have finally realised that such an invasive DRM system will cause a mass exodus of people from windows to Lenix. Microsoft seems determined to play into Lonis Torvaldez's hands with issues like these and I can't say that I'm ungrateful. Now if only WINE could play more games I'd switch straight away as the rest of my pirated material already works perfectly under linix.

It sickens me how fanboy-ism seems to have invaded this once rational community. Every second story is some thinly disguised advertisement for the latest AppleCo product or Linus operating system, and when somebody points this out they are drowned out by a hundred shrieking shills.

I thought nerds were supposed to pride themselves on objectivity and logical thought? This kind of blind support for a company or website seems to be the direct opposite of what we should be promoting. It's a pity the editors don't seem to care -- they just keep adding inconsequential stories to the ever crappier frontpage, while IP banning anyone who speaks out against it.

I'll probably get modded down for saying this, but I would rather open sauce stays out of Brazil until they clear up these little problems. I realise the slashdot groupthink says it's ok to disrespect intellectual property as long as it's not the GPL being broken -- but how much of the code they intend to use is under the GPL, and how long will it be before it ends up in unauthorised programs?

IIRC, the database software that tracks the food inventories on board the space station and the space shuttle on longer flights runs on proprietary code. Perhaps if the software were revamped, and open source software used instead the community could help out a little? Many eyes make for few bugs -- and when the bugs are as easy to spot as the "food" entry reading zero I see no reason to put up with badly written, unfree software.

Hell, with the savings made they could probably upgrade the menus a bit, instead of eating paste three times a day they could afford to buy the astronauts some hot grits or something equally tasty once in a while.

I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Valve fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Linux box (a PIII 800 w/512 Megs of RAM) for about 35 minutes now while it attempts to Install Half-Life 2. 35 minutes. At home, on my Pentium Pro 200 running NT 4, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Linux box, installing Doom 3 took about 15 minutes. In addition, during this install, Mozilla will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even Emacs Lite is straining to keep up as I type this.

I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while installing Valve products, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Valve product that has run faster than its ID counterpart, despite the Valve products faster optimised code. My 486/66 with 8 megs of ram installs windows faster than this 800 mhz machine can do Half-Life at times. From an ease of installation standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that Valve is a "superior" company.

Valve addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Valve product over other faster, cheaper, more stable games.

With a topic as delicate as this one (child pornography) I think it is hard to argue reasonably either way -- one side you seem to be enabling the child pornographists through inaction, on the other you go against this mythical "free speech" business you USoAians have.

My personal stance on the issue is manage it on a regional basis, if your country/state/city feels strongly enough about the issue they can ban the internet completely if it is voted on, and people not in the area are unaffected. As long as no legitimate content (eg "speech") is censored or blocked, there should be no problem with it. Hell, put a switch on every new PC saying "child pornography - ON/OFF" and let the consumers decide for themselves, instead of legislating it to high heaven.

Let's face it, these child pornogrophers are always going to be releasing their stuff, it is up to the people weather they want to watch it or something made by more mature people. Simple as that.

something to hold against a company or person? I thought America was the land of capitalism, where those who rise to the top of their fields (be they individuals or corporations) are lauded for their achievements, not sniped at from the sidelines for being more successful than someone else. I come from a country where "tall poppy syndrome" (the cutting down of those above you) is endemic, and it is not a pleasant environment to operate a business in. If America wishes to stay on top of the world's technology ladder, it would be beneficial to eradicate this attitude towards success.

I see this kind of ting far too often on slashdot, a post about some great achievement followed by a snarky comment from an editor about its inefficiency or some other nit, to be followed up by hundreds of posts proclaiming how they would have done it better. I say applaud those innovating and succeeding, don't discourage them.
