Oh my god I think I just saw a cat and a dog living in harmony, the moon turning blood red, and the sun going black as coal itself. People defending M$ - the angels are blaring their trumpets - Bill Gates is logging into /. for the first time and not seeing his name shredded :)

All in all, I have used win 95 all the way up - and while they all had their issues - nowhere did I ever call them unuseable (well maybe except ME which stayed on my hard drive only as long as it took me to reformat)...Everything has its flaws its just a matter of knowing how to fix them. Prior to SP2 I ran ZA, separate pop-up blockers, etc.

I wouldn't go on saying that MS is a one time thing or no other company will ever grow as fast as them in this industry....Never is a big word :D, and they sure as hell didn't do it over night.

Though asking a marketer to not spin something into something its not is like asking a politician to return the stolen money...

A few things to note is, in B2B transactions prices are almost never discussed in the "advertisement." This is because prices in B2B are generally negotiable. This has carried itself (sometimes) to B2C transactions. Nothing is wrong with this. A lot of times companies do not want the prices listed because they are so expensive - and the face explanation of the product does not show exactly what the customer is getting (i.e. world class support). Other times prices are not listed because quantity rules, or the sales person might be willing to take a cut just to help make the sale - or the company might get special packaging (buy product X for 1000 bucks, but if you buy product Y we will give oyu X for 800 bucks), etc...

Though I do agree, somewhat, that more fluff talk = more BS...but that should not exclude someone from researching the product. I would rather have a well thought out, complex sentence that shows some imagination then the "Me John, Me hit Jane head. Jane now mine."

You want to hear political BS? For one of my tech writing classes we had to help the professor do some tech writing for a local state rep. So we wrote some stuff up saying "We like this rep.. he is great..." etc...

I then asked the professor why we were writing fictional stuff - especially since the copy we were supposed to be writing was going to be used in his ads. The professor informed me that this fictional stuff would be used. They would just get one of his supporters to claim it as their own. So when you see a political ad of joe schmoe saying how great their politician is --- take it with a big chunk (not grain) of salt.

Not that it mattered, the site was identical minus some colors and a swap of images...the text (custom text) was word for word the same.

The CEO of their company said the site was similiar, but loosely similar. I don't care that they took it down - I personally wanted to sue because of his non-chalant comments. He should have said "we are very sorry, please don't sue, we are firing our web designers today"

Around Spring of 2003, an article came out showing that people who multi-task are actually less efficient then people who do not multi-task. A number of tests were done and what it boiled down to is that every time you switch from one task to the next your brain has to reorganize. This wastes (noticeable) time. Also, even though you might be able to start working - your brain may not be finished reorganizing itself so you may not remember everything you do at the start.

I kind of agree and use some real life examples. For those of us who program - you sit down, you get in your grove and you start to code. Then someone calls. I generally have to unfocus from what I am doing and take a couple of seconds before I can even understand what the person wants. Then, when I am finished with the call, it takes me a few seconds to get back into my work (and hell I might of lost my grove).

Actually, w/o rtfa article, my question is: will this highway be this long along ALL it's length. I live in the Philadelphia area. i476 (blue route) has a portion that is 4 lanes - unfortunately this only lasts for less then a mile. So when there is traffic we still have major congestion as it bottle necks - so it is fairly pointless to have a 4 lane highway.

I had a website once for a game (MajorMud). it was considered the best available for people to get up-to-date, comperhensive, accurate data. I inputted the data entirely by hand (no html editing programs, only notepad). I would spend two - three hours a day updating it, and would get around 50-80 emails with requests, edits, etc from people (this was around 1995). One day I went and checked out a "rivals" site which just came up. She copied my data tables line for line, with the exception she did not provide ANY credit to me or even asked for my permission. I think it's lame to do. If you really like someones stuff, ask their permission and even go one step further and give them credit.

On a recent note, I found that a company had copied my companies website word for word.. with the exception they changed the background colors and changed some of the graphics (they actually stole the graphics from Adobe website).

I believe the steps I took back then, and the steps we took with the company site were the same: we contacted them, told them to remove it or else. They did which was good - but the Internet is so big it is hard to find people copying your site.

Unfortunately in civil case you can prove that someone was partly at fault (10% of it was his fault) so he should pay 10% of the damages.

So on that note - lets say you get run over by a car when you crossed an intersection. Lets say if you crossed that intersection two minutes ago you would not have been run over. Well prior to crossing the street I happend to speak with you for two minutes - if we didn't speak you would not have been run over. While this example is ridiculous - a jury could say it is my fault for preventing you from going on your way earlier.
I do not know if OJ did it or not - but the courts didn't prove that he did. In our society it is innocent until proven guilty. Apparantly the civil courts felt that even though he was "not guilty" in criminal court - he was somehow responsible. Sorry i know this is off topic - just inane things (our civil courts are flawed) really irk me; especially when they can really hurt people.
