I was even feeling good about it - you know I was even thinking of downloading Damn Small Linux ISO today - until I saw this. Now I realize there is no hope - I will feel bad about the connection I have because someone somewhere has it much better and is still not happy That apart, I think more we go towards wireless, penetration will improve and prices will drop faster. Maybe a Rate this Content would also help build some assessment of the reliability People should work towards improving the reliability index by correcting if necessary a threshold can be fixed where content is considered "autoritative"

My Rupees 2 on this on
    a) Why this is such a big deal
    b) Why at all do this
ISRO deserves all the praise it can get. During these moments, its important to not look just at the success - but view them in the context of our failures.
ISRO did have a few bad starts with our Augmented/Advanced Satellite Launch Vehicles (ASLV) http://www.astronautix.com/lvs/aslv.htm which went crash and burn often enough to earn the title Another Sea Loving Vehicle. This could have very well crippled any space program. But we got it right - and now we get it right most of the time.
In India, the news on Indian channels also focus as much on the reusability of the launch vehicle itself and the loads we are able to ship, thereby making us less reliant on Ariane etc.. Forex is precious, we need to preserve it.
And regarding our priorities - hunger, education etc. Look, India is huge. We get hit bad by disasters, if you look at it most of the objectives of the satellites relate to basic needs - communication, weather, water resource management, land development, disaster management - http://www.isro.org/pressrelease/May01_2005.htm these objectives are of relevance to most of India.
Any country worth its salt must be self reliant, we maybe poor, but I dont believe investing in such technology is wasteful. India may appear to drag its heel more than others - because its big. Our political establishment is pretty bad - but credit where its due - though its messy in the details, there is consensus on the larger issues of development.

  14. Another Scenario on Quake Changes Earth's Rotation, Moves Islands · · Score: 1

There is now a lot of speculation on other scenarios as well. One that I heard today which seemed entirely feasible is if the plates keep shifting and move down too much they just might punch a hole and let lava burst out causing under-sea volcanic eruption which could trigger off tidal waves. Andaman is having so many earthquakes now that it doesnt seem like the plates have found stability yet. Also reg. the wobble - are they sure its not due to the 8 something in Antartica - being at the pole it really should shake things up.

Same thing has been bothering me too - guess they never did look at a tsunami possibility. We felt tremors at 6.30 AM - i looked up the seismology at USGS and saw Indonesia's quake -I did look at the map and said gee - there is just the sea between us - but I did not imagine a tsunami would wash ashore - but hey - Iam not the Met or the Oceanography guys - I am sure quiet a few people who could have done something stayed quiet. Even 2 hrs is enough to clear families from the shoreline - they need not have died - we lost about a 100 of them here in Chennai.

I live quiet close to the shore in Besant Nagar- we got off easy - but it was awesome (not as in exciting but leave your mouth open gaping awesome) to see the sea swell up and eat up the shoreline. I was just driving past and saw a boat go up and down about 20-30 feet from the road!! I parked the car, grabbed the camera - but by then the sea had receded - but that was enough to cause serious damage to the hutments close to the sea. We had mild tremor to start the day - barely noticeable at around 6.30 AM - i looked up the internet and found Tibet post of USGS registering a 8.9 quake at Sumatra -looking at the map I thought to myself - all thats in the line between Sumatra and Chennai is the sea (and of course teeny weeny Andaman). Went out for Breakfast and on my return - this. Its unforgettable and cannot be described. Most of India's coast is devastated - I hear Sri Lanka, Maldives etc are pretty bad too. The Quake here was nothing - a mild shake at best - but the Tsunami that followed was something else Apologies for the verbose post - but I am struggling for words to tell what happened.

Social Responsibility Vs Entrepreneurial Spirit - always a delicate balance. I guess in a round about way the average citizen benefits because more profits => more corporate tax => more benefits/facilities/amenities/ less personal tax. But I know that it doesnt make sense to someone who has just lost their paying job. As an Indian, I would like to point out a couple of things: 1. Dont worry too much about outsourcing - its America which holds the strings of that puppet show - the Govt. can step in any time to level the playing field - it could be taxes, could be subsidies for local operators - anything which would make it not as viable to outsource. 2. Worry a lot about out-shoring - thats when (1) happens and corporate greed will find workarounds by not outsourcing but operating right out of cheaper countries. Now Free Enterprise is what makes America great - its a paradox US will have to deal with. As usual the truth is a shade of gray somewhere in between.
