Instead of making it per download, they could offer a life time membership which would enable access to all patches of this nature in the future for $5. Problem solved once and for all..... unless of course they see it as a way to milk just a little bit more money (considering its not $1... I believe this could be the real reason)
The only complaint is rice is cheap not free - can you imagine paying nearly $0.50 for 10 Kilograms (22 lbs)? Govt. these days.... ....just kidding- TN is pretty good when it comes to most things comparitively.
Glad that they went through with this - whatever their reasons may be (empty coffers must likely), the path they have taken is a brave one. There may be some FUD initially, but typically these govt. officials do nothing more than what they are told to do on the PC (i.e. press ALT-P, type, click on OK etc... - of course in TN, everything must be in Tamil as well). So there wont be any complaints like "This new Nvidia card is not working on my PC" OR "how can I get this to recognize my new USB external hard drive"...
Congrats SUSE - you got yourself 30,000+ new users who wont complain much. Having said that, everything will get blamed on the "new SW" - including printer jams, network failures - anything.
I agree that India does throw up the occassional barriers of trade when it sees some revenue opportunities subverted. the provincial attitude could well be our inheritance from our being a colony of a "first world" nation, the Brits.
But I cant understand how a "first world country" can put of barriers of entry of people in the form of demeaning and draconian visa policies and pretend it encourages business. In the garb of protection of intellectual rights, patents have been awarded for even common knowledge and expects other nations to honour it. If all that means being "first world", thank you very much but we like our third world low life as it is.
Every country creates barriers to protect and/or propel its own industry - being "third world", "first world", having McDonalds, knowledge of English has nothing to do with it.
Titles like technological powerhouse, "first world" etc. are transitional and mean nothing over time - it would be nice, but its a rather small objective.
Yes - thats an excellent point - you cannot discount the commercial benefits of the capability of launching and putting an object on orbit. The space race may have been won by the US and Russia -but space is still good business.
India pays a lot to the French when we want to launch a weather / telecom satellite - we could not only save on that, but also provide cost effective options for other 3rd world countries to put their own satellites in orbit. Not that a man on the moon is necessary for this - but it is a good goal for ISRO to work towards and show case India's capabilities beyond doubt.
I agree that most of the problems you point to do exist and there are in fact much more.
But every once in a while, a nation needs an inspirational moment where all these disparate masses you point to will sit shoulder to shoulder and feel proud that one of them is up there. Maybe it will also put things in perspective.
Its not always about picking an unsolved problem - it is only about feeling that if we put our minds and work hard towards it, no problem is unsurmountable. That would include seemingly distant pipe dreams like eradication of poverty, corruption and improvement of healthcare.
Neither is it too technologically challenging nor is it prohibitively expensive - if I disagree with one thing, 2020 is way too much time for it.
Maybe Wikipedia needs a content rating/ moderation system - say "Reliability Index" Content rating must be assessed based on stats like how many no. of reads, no. of edits. - these are just samples which indicate how many independent people have had a chance to assess the content. Maybe a Rate this Content would also help build some assessment of the reliability People should work towards improving the reliability index by correcting if necessary a threshold can be fixed where content is considered "autoritative"
Well I checked on their site FAQ:
1) Do you license mp3, mp3PRO and mp3surround software to end users?
No. We license mp3/mp3PRO software and patents to developers and manufacturers of software applications and hardware devices.
Huhhhh??
Seems to me that I am paying for the same patent too many times - when I buy a mobile, an ipod, car stereo, audio system, OS......instead of all that, if I could just buy a license can I use it on all these devices. What I mean to say is that too many OEMs are buying the same license on my behalf for each of their devices. That seems like a bad deal.
I agree. Guess what I was trying to compare it with meant acts of terrorism - not terrorism.
passing mobiles can have the same effect

Passing mobiles got 12 indians into trouble with the Dutch and US Air marshalls. Its horrible how jumpy people have become. Fear is more debilitating than terrorism.
Why that angle may not work is killer apps always have a business model:-)....and if it does work, it wont take long for Mac and Windows to offer it. Linux will only have a first mover advantage.
...and they feel compelled to show that its in their hands and go out and do daft things. I saw mumbai.blogspot.com in google's cache and its hardly anythign which must be banned - instead they ought to link to it from their dingy no-info sites.
These politician and bureaucrat low lifes make me sick.
Just to illustrate.... I read the article, thought the photos were nice and sharp and I wanted to know which camera was used. Saw the footer credit telling who took those pics - did a search for the photographer name + Flickr on google and came up with a match. Looked up and found a pic with exif info which said its was Olympus E-300
Now I know I maybe wrong - but what you should be thinking is Hell, I could be right.
The power of google is tying the loose ends in unstructured content. Its awesome.
Huh - must be a april fool prank.
Everyone knows Jedis cut through steel by thought. The saber is to just light things up a bit and make it brighter -to make sure power of the dark side does not work against the jedi.
