It's one thing to bloat KDE with questionably useful features, it's quite another to bloat KDE with features of this sort. I just hope the default is not HTML.
And if their wage + tips is less than minimum wage, they can get the difference from their employer. Of course, 99% don't know this, and why would the employer tell them? Overall, I think i would rather be a waiter at a sit down restaurant than a fast food worker. For my dignity more than anything else.
Apple has given a lot more to the open source movement that IBM or Sun.
Care to give a few examples? I've heard of many of IBM's contributions, however very few of Apple's. I know OS X is based on open source and darwin is open source (does anyone actually use it? I mean, besides OS X users.)
Because it requires changing the configuration of your mail client. Easier to set and forget, than to change the smtp when you go to other networks (such as work or an internet cafe.) To be honest, I imagine it probably works just fine off their networks, perhaps with pop authentication before hand? I agree with your complaint though, there's really no reason for people to run their own smtp server for sending email.
I too would be screaming for someone to call 911 on my behalf. My god, trapped in a phone booth! What if they broke through? It's a great thing everyone has cell phones these days.
I don't think even most Japanese pay the NHK tax. Although there's a law saying if you have a TV, you're obligated to pay the tax, there's no enforcement clauses. A law that cannot be enforced is what exactly, not a law?;)
If it was all GPL you would have a point, however the fact of the matter is just because something runs on Linux doesn't mean it's GPLd software. Look at the licenses of included software, it's not all GPL.
There are a few exceptions; sites that need javascript that I really do want to use. For these, I fire up another browser just for the purpose of entering that site. And close that browser when I'm done.
And a spare tire isn't necessary on a car, with a few exceptions..

Opengl in php.. well, let's see, you could umm.. sell it to a PHB who doesn't know any better, or make bets with people at the local pub that it can be done and then whip it out to win the bet.
Do we really want blogging software, p2p software, etc included with gnome? Is gnome so perfect in other respects to justify adding features that 0.01% of people are going to use? I think a better use of resources would be improving and debugging the current Gnome programs before adding this -- someone else can always program p2p apps and blogging software.
I used to work as a grunt in a transmission shop and through that I've been to a good deal of different shops on business.
Standard at the shop I worked at was to only charge the fee when it was a bitchy customer or involved removing the transmission from the vehicle. Otherwise, a lot of diagnostic work was done free (You could argue it was made up for in what we charge for other services, but that's true for everything "free")
In my experience dealing with other shops, that's generally true of nearly the whole auto service industry. Take a look at their car, check for the obvious things, and if more extensive testing is needed you start charging the customer for it (letting them know before hand of course.)
I'm happy to report my virgin mobile "plan" still requires me to "top up" $20 every 90 days and doing so adds $20 to my virgin mobile account, none deducted for various fees. I'm sure they pay the same fees as everyone else, but it's hidden from me which is really the way it should be. I don't care what they pay to deliver the service to me, I only care what the service costs me.
Nope, no jokes from me. 2.6 vs 2.4 -- yeah, I really expected a huge jump -- but it just didn't happen. It's been suggested by others that SUSE had backported a lot of the 2.6 goodies into earlier 2.4 kernels they used and that may be why I didn't notice anything.
Same deal with KDE 3.2 vs 3.1.
lilo/grub, eh.. user interface isn't really that much different now is it, now is it. Sure, setting it up is different but when you turn on the computer you got a graphical menu either way.
I've always been in the minority when it comes to new things, or so it seems to me. You see tons of people notice huge speed increases when they try gentoo for the first time.. Yet, it didn't seem any faster to me.
This is another similar situation. A lot of people have noticed a lot of improvement in SUSE every release that I simply never notice. The changes from 8.1 to 9.2 haven't been very great at all -- at least, not from my perspective.
Probably, I just don't make use of these newfangled things. I did notice the new menus on 9.0 and I liked that, but for the most part SUSE 9.1 seems just like SUSE 8.1 to me.
I agree, you can definetly hear a difference on good speakers, but so what?
People with crappy speakers will not hear a difference.
Therefore, any difference in the results must have come from those with good speakers.
It's not like crappy speakered individuals are going to skew it by claiming sample A is better than sample B when that's not true. They couldn't tell a difference! They'd report sample A is equal to sample B. They don't hurt anything.
On the other hand, by maintaining strict control on the hardware, you ignore a LOT of very good speakers because it's impossible to have every single set of speakers in the world.
Finally, not all speakers being identical, it is entirely feasible that one particular sample on one particular speaker set will favor one particular codec when overall that sample favors a different codec on a different set of speakers. Way to trash your results! Nope, I think the system is far better as is.
So what? Sure, the people (majority) with crappy speakers will give the same rating to everything, and if they were the only ones the test would tell you that. However, as the results aren't all the same obviously some people are taking the test who have better speakers. In the end, I'd much rather have the test done on a wide range of speakers to rule out the speakers favoring a certain codec.
Wait, you expect someone to make money on IE? If it wasn't included with Windows, who would be left running it?
I don't know, but I'm sure hungry for some Krispy Kreme now.

Comcast doesn't care what the from: is set to when you send mail through their smtp servers. If they did, I'd whine too.
I'm not sure how comcast smtp servers work if you're not on their network, perhaps at an internet cafe or something. I should try it sometime.
Can people at your school opt out of the educational network? Are they able to purchase cable or dsl on their own?

Your argument would have been a lot stronger had the parent actually said "depriving somebody of use" -- it didn't, it said "deprived of code"

Or hardly anyone bought them in the first place.

A better comparison would be programming your own "Linux" to get around the GPL crap (go for it.) Nobody took Apple's software, they wrote their own.
