No, they're simply countering people that claim the government MUST fund stem cell research to find a cure. If this works, then that isn't true. Stem cell research, and all the controversy surrounding it, is no longer necessary.
Please, RTFA or the story title. The cure is for Type I diabetes. I don't know if it does anything for Type II, but maybe it is related to the spleen. Since the pancreas is the only vital organ than can grow back, the connection between the spleen and the pancreas in diabetes can be important to find a cure for Type II.
But stem cell research is *much* more important than just for diabetes. Stem cells can grow into any tissue type. This means stem cell research can be used to treat damaged heart tissue (ie. no need for heart transplants), or grow new nerve cells for people with brain injuries.
From article: But if she is correct, scientists will also have to reconsider many claims for embryonic stem cells as a cure for diabetes, and perhaps for other diseases.
Why? This statement is 100% false. For many diseases and disorders there is more than one method of treatment. For cancer, there is chemotherapy and radioation. Both work. Same thing for diabetes, if one method works, why not another?
Stem cell research can result in a cure for diabetes. The same thing can be true for Dr. Denise Faustman's treatment.
I'd have to say NYT either is biased against stem cell research or they just repeat another's bias.
What's the highest frequency EM raidation that can be detected/measured with the technology we have today?
I've read (somewhere) that the highest energy *photon* ever observed was ~1MJ. That is on the order of 10^24eV! Not sure of the error on this though.
As for highest energy cosmic rays, well, they seem to get to 10^20eV. But there is a cutoff limit for cosmic rays since they interact with microwave background (see that same page).
Thousands of cosmic rays do not pass through our bodies every day.
They are called muons. There is a lot more than a thounsand per day! And they can do A LOT of damage. Oh, and muons are produced from cosmic ray interractions in the upper atmosphere.
Just got this spam about two days ago.. Maybe it is related..

What will really "bake your noodle" is that maybe the entire universe *is* nothing. Nothing was created. How? Well, consider that you have no money. So you get a loan. Then you have -$5 loan and $5 cash. But in reality you still have no money.
Welcome to the world of quantum physics where nothing is something and something is nothing.
I'm a devout Christian and evolution is just another one of God's miracles to me.... I don't see why Creationism and Evolution are not compatible.
Here, let me make it *very* clear.
Creationism is a *belief*. It is something that is proposed in the *Bible*. Creationism is not based in facts, it is based in beliefs. Saying that creationism is another "theory" is a disgrace to both religion and to science.
Evolution is based on scientific *observation* of how things change as they adoped to different environments. There is no belief here - it is based on observations of life in different places and see how it adapted to the environemnt. This is based on current observations of life as well as fossil and geological records.
Creationism states things from beginning to end. From moment of creation to now. It talks how the environment was shaped for life.
Evolution states things from end (now) to the past. It talks how life is shaped by the environemnt.
Creationism basis in the real world is on equal footing of that of the Greek gods. It was *believed* that only gods could make water flow downhill. Well, now we know better and gods responsible for water flowing down are not relevent anymore.
Whenever the church wants to impose creationism on a theory of evolution, it will just embarrass itself. Only a decade or two ago the Roman Cathlic church finally admited that Galileo was not spreading heresy when he was talking about Earth not being the center of the universe!
So please. Don't mix the two. They are NOT compatible.
And we are to believe that human activity is somehow solely resposible for global warming?
Hmmm, yes. You see, Mars' polar caps melt every two years. And how much data do we have about Mars? Let's see, about none.
I have no freaking clue what you are talking about the Earth's magnetic field. For one, it has *NOTHING* to do with global warming. You might as well start talking about Mars again:)
About the sun, well, let's see. Sunspots are actually cooler areas of the Sun. So the more sunspots, the cooler the sun!
So parent might be interesting, but not very insigtful or informative. Human CO2 emissions since the Industrial Age over 150 years ago are *directly* proportional to the global warming. Temperature records around the world are *very accurate* over this period (ie. ice core samples).
While Clinton's Bosnia project was better handled than the current Iraq fiasco, it was still a bad thing. Lots of innocent people got killed because we decided to intervene for "humanitarian" reasons
lol. What about the ethnic cleansing? You know, that was not exactly about washing people.
The video is actually quite informative. Cats can fall from rather large heights on their legs and not be injured. In the video, when the cat "lands" at the end, you see its legs spread out. During a fall this actually increases drag and saves the cat. The manouvers the cat does in the air is so it falls on its legs.
The animals that are least adapted to zero-G must be birds...
Number one should be to have a clear goal on replacing oil as the main source of energy within, say 10 years.
Haven't you heard? The "clean coal technologies" are the future! LOL! This is the most irritating commerial of the entire presidential campaign.
When will the gov'ts step up to the plate and actually fund fusion research? The problems with the test reactors are now well known (size being one). Why not just spend some money and build a prototype of a *real* fusion reactor. Something that actually *produces* energy on a sustained basis.
Having a fusion reactor solves not only the energy problems. It also solves the nuclear weapons problems. There would not be an excuse for countries to start building fission reactors or mining uranium if fusion is available unless their goal is to build nukes.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that it includes other people. Do you dream of what some guy across the city childern future is? To say that everyone should have a better future isn't the American Dream, its more, IMHO, of the Communist Dream.
I see. So when someone will outsource your job, maybe it is not a bad thing after all. It is just someone else's "American Dream".
I guess this sheds some light why US is swimming in debt while Bush shrugs it off as "unimportant". He seems to be living the same "American Dream". Too bad US is literaly going bankrupt. I hope parent is out of debt when the interest rates go sky-high and inflation is more than 20%. On second thought, maybe I'll take parent's advice and don't!
Of course, American's are perplexed why US is generally the most hated country in the world. With this type of "American Dream"... LOL.
The situation is somewhat similar with the Linux 'updatedb' and 'locate' built-in search facilities.
No it isn't. Updatedb runs as root and it does nothing but caches the file tree. It doesn't go though the files. It doesn't cache file contents. Any file that 3rd party is not suppose to be read, cannot be read by a 3rd party. Period.
Updatedb/locate do nothing but make it faster to search though a file tree for a given filename.
Charge carriers propagate at about the speed of molasses. Go read this website, it is great:
True. People have to realize that *current* is proportional to the amount of electrons. *Voltage* is proportional to the electric field that is moving these electrons. Electrons' average velocity in a material is related to that voltage.
What is moving at the speed of light is the "voltage" (electric field) in the conductor (wave guide).
But seriously, the problem with a total moratorium is that then the research cant be done.
Not a total moratorium. There should be a moratorium of mixing genes from dissimilar species and then releasing these genes into the wild. But this research should continue in labs as long as GM organisms could not escape. Mixing genes from the same family is less of a question mark.
There are a number of times protestors have destroyed a test crop (and usually the normal crop, not the GM one!) and thus destroyed the results from the very experiment that was meant to prove that something was safe.
You can't prove that something is safe. You can only prove it doesn't act unexpectedly during the course of the experiment. Safe implies long term safety. These experiments only show short term safety.
GM plants can be VERY beneficial if modified correctly.
A small catch - if you insert genes that were never ment to mix, you might end up with a beneficial "product" over a short term, but a big unknown over a long term. Heck, pharmaceuticals can't even create a single molecule that doesn't have side effects (see latest drug recalls) and now "GM scientists" seems understands long term genetic interractions.
Using GM technologies to select best seeds to plant might be a good idea. Mixing genes of plants from the same family might also be beneficial. Introducting fungus genes into a fish might not be a good idea. We don't know the long term complicatinos of doing this. It could result in further interraction with other organisms and produce nasty side-effects. These biological systems have evolved on different paths for over a *billion* years. They have different diseases that are specific to that DNA (viruses, for example). Combining DNA could introduce migratory paths for these diseases. Furthermore, "protein diseases" could result since modified DNA might not be able to fold properly. Misfolded proteins is actually the cause of the so called Mad Cow Disease.
Contaminating DNA from dissimilar species should be illegal for the next 100 years or until we undestand all DNA interrations like we understand QED and election interractions. Why? Because we are *guessing* at what will happen when we introduce these genes. Remeber when scientists were guessing what the effects of radiation was on people? There are portable x-ray viewers so you could xray your foot to see if the shoe fit!! All scientists said xray was harmless. They actually administered large doses of xrays to "cure the flu". Now we know better.
Too bad you can't recall GM stuff 100 years after it is introducted. You can't contain it like radiation. You can't put the Genie back into the bottle. Maybe those "in Soviet Russia" jokes apply more than one might think.
"In s/Sovient Russia/GM World/ your products recall you!".

They didn't. They just used "int num_votes" on the modern Windows 3.x platform.
It is called `md5sum`

What is more interresting than a source of cosmic rays is the source of the gamma bursts. Some background is here.
So who invented the real numbers? I mean, quaternions are just numbers.
ie. please stop using "invent" when talking about math. Math is not invented, it is deduced.

Those are prion diseases like BSE. Prion diseases seem to occur in other species as well eg. fish that are fed a non-fish diet.
Prion diseases are not limited to human brains.
