Frontpage was filled with a huge Slashdot broadband advertisement. Maybe it's time to have slashdot.org redirect to slashdot.com i.s.o the other way....;-)
If something will be the cause of linux never succeeding on the corporate desktop.. then it is this kind of 'infighting'. Sure they are competitors. But with the same base product (Linux distro + services). They have a partially shared goal. Without recognizing that, either a 3rd linux party will walk away with the clients, or linux will not be an option. Who wants a supplier that has nothing better to do than fighting it's own goals?
Then you will be considered a terrorist for endangering the American economy by having corporate networks comprimised.
And you know what happens to things that endanger de US economy... they will be eliminated.. ermmm... I mean.. democracy and freedom will be brought to them, or they will thought of as totally unimportant (environmental issues).
"All those flash ads out there provide therir own pressure on Adobe to keep Flash as cross platform as possible."
Not really. x86_64 Linux (I mean the x86 compatible one, like for AMD64) has been out for what... almost 2 years now, but still no flash plugin for 64 bit browsers...
"The sad state of affairs is that Big Brother probably became a quiet part of our lives a lot earlier. The big question now is: how much worse can it get?"
No the big question is... how to fight this development without being locked up for being concidered a terrorist...
"the Sun Grid Compute Utility Cool Apps Prize for Innovation contest" I think the prize money should go to those few people that can remember the name of that contest.
"Most people don't actually care. There's even a hell of a lot out there that actually love Microsoft products (they're an American company, wave flag, etc.)," By profiling it as an american company (which ofcourse it is) they risk alienating a LOT of other countries which become sicker everyday of the american way. On the other hand... Maybe that will help getting a real alternative within maybe 3-5 years.
Just like being able to circumvent these things, one day those governments will be able to track down the circumventing. People here on slashdot always start shouting that an encryption technique / DRM scheme will be broken one day... Well.. big surprise : so will this. My question : Will these students feel any guilt when the users of their software hear a life-sentence or death penalty ruled against them? Even though their disclaimer will probably contain a couple of phrases that they are not responsible for the consequences, because ofcourse, the users of the software are.
"Next time you have someone asking you questions about Linux not knowing whether they should try, you can just direct them to this article." The people that will maybe someday ask me that question, are probably the ones that don't speak english very well:-( Just my luck...
Advertising was dying slowly... Well.. every company was advertising its pants off, but with the average audience that has a concentration with very short timespan (anyone noticed that series on tv don't last an hour or an hour and a half anymore but when you take away the commercials they are about 35-40 minutes), and a total overload of commericials, nobody is paying attention anymore. Well.. there's always tellsell that weak minds fall for.. but anyway...
So what do you do when a product/service is about to kick the bucket? You re-invent it. And to be honoust.. this could be brilliant. Not only do you revive the interest of the advertisers... you can charge them a huge amount more !! Or do you really think they pay 1/30 of the amount they were paying for a 30 second commercial ? No way !!
So you make maybe 5 times as much money per second and you have maybe a couple of years to come up with a real solution for the declining interest with consumers, before advertisers get a clue they were suckered. 1 second is just to short for being called subliminal messaging.. but not by much. So maybe it will 'hang around' in people's brain... but that's just the brand... not how good it is.. you can't get a real message across.
But I have a good advise... LESS advertising... maybe people will notice it again.

"The most popular contributor to the photo site Flickr.com just got a contract to shoot a Toyota ad campaign."
I hope that those ad campaigns aren't as tough as at Toyota car. Those are nearly indestructible. Would be hard to shoot them....
"They call for the next Bangs or Thompson and a revival of Gonzo."
;-)
I just love the muppets !!!

Sure they can.. depending on how hard it is thrown at you, if the console/pc is still attached, and where it hits you...
which country will they bomb ??
So... to run this OS, I need an OS to run the browser I can run that OS in... Doesn't sound like overkill at all
Try it the other way around
Microsoft Windows is often associated with desktop computing, but Linux has never achieved that on a large scale.
So RedHat is basically saying that (RH)Linux will never ever be able compete on the desktop. Then why are they putting all the effort in it?
I can discover even more frontdoors in the same period of time.
But how many are open so I can walk in ???
It's a leg-crusher
I can guess !! Because it is a beta !!!
I think they should be taught with a SATA ;-)
I knew one day this question would be asked....

Next time I'll read TFA first : The introduction says that is was translated from Dutch :-) Lucky me ;-)

"Howecer compare with:
:1 year
Windows 95 to 98: 3 years
98 to ME: 2 years
ME to XP: 2 years.
XP to Vista: 4 years"
Actually... :
Windows 95 to 98: 3 years
Windows 98 to 98SE: 1 year
98SE to ME : 1 year
ME to 2000 : 1 year
2000 to XP
XP to Vista 4 years
One might argue that ME was consumer and 2000 was corporate.. but ME was so bad that everyone turned to 2000.
That is brilliant :-)
Unfortunately, that is also where my mod points were probably...
I always thought that wanting the best for your kids was 1 of the things that made you a good parent.... ;-) Shame on you Mr Balmer !
