There's one where I live. The secret for them seems to be console gaming. The place has a ton of xboxes, and hosts Halo tournaments on the weekends. They also sell candy, and have a profitable deal with a nearby pizza place. I actually considered setting up a similar operation myself.

  7. Apple the Record Company on Music Labels Charge Too Much For Microsoft · · Score: 2, Interesting

If the record companies abandon apple, then apple will be left with a pre-existing user base of music fans, and all the infrastructure it needs to become a major record company itself. It will sign on new bands by promising them 50% of all revenue, and be able to lower the song price to $.50. Apple will make $.20 more per download, as will the artists. The lower cost of distribution and advertizing will enable them to sign more diverse, local bands then would be profitable the way the record companies do business. The fans would get a better selection, for half the price. Incentives could be given to big name bands to switch to apple, and suddenly you have a music industry without greedy, anacronistic record companies.

By writing the screwtape letters, C.S. Lewis was trying to explain that a superficial obedience to Christian morality is ideal, so long as it doesn't involve the larger issues of a person's will.

Screwtape reminds his reader that his master, the devil, trys to keep ideas (such as Christianity) out of our heads more often than he tries to put them in.

  19. Re:intelegant design != God on The Pseudoscience of Intelligent Design · · Score: 1

For heaven's sake, Jesus taught in parables! Make the connection, people!

Yes, and Jesus' parables were simplified examples of deeper truths of mankind. Thus, if the creation story is considered as a parable, we can see it as a simplification of something that the majority of its readers (most of history, and probably us as well) could not understand.

Also, we have to remember that time is a dimension like all the rest, and therefore, if you believe God created height, width and depth, then he also created time. If he created time, he must be outside of time.

For this reason, the Earth could have had a "history" at the moment it was created. By making measurements and hypotheses today, we can gain insight into this history, but we cannot gain insight into truth that is not part of (or within) time. That is what Bibles are for.
